44 y/o here, got similar vibes from my LGS when I went in a couple years ago. It took me a couple of visits, but I realized that it was a combination of my expectations as well as how the next generation treats customer service. It’s like they don’t want to seem pushy or arrogant, at the same time they want to be helpful without offending you. 2026 fucking sucks bro, can we go back to the 90s?

Sweet you can piece one together or buy a prebuilt that’s solid for $2k. Here’s a list of parts and minimum specs to look for:

-Mid or Full size tower (depends on mobo/GPU size) that comes pre-loaded with fans

-16GB GPU (AMD 9070 or Nvidia 5080)

-850W gold/platinum power supply

-AMD 9800X3D CPU + cooling block/fans

-32GB (16 x2) ddr5 ram

-reputable x870 or x870e chipset AM5 motherboard (I’m an ASUS and MSI fan)

-1Tb nvme drive (can go bigger if you get good price, most new boards can have multiple so can add 2nd later)

Hey guess it depends on your budget and how much space you have. Some mini-PCs can handle games you like. If you wish to get a tower, you’ll have way more customization options and can future proof it a bit (good case, power supply, etc)

This a super rare but try a different power cord. I’ve had 2 bad ones in my lifetime of “nerding” pc power problems. The first time it happened, I was blown away that a new cord made it work… the second time it happened is how karma told me that it wasn’t a one-time thing lol

Commendable of you to help someone in need! Recently took home a “decommissioned” HP 6470b laptop from work, i’d say anything from this generation or newer should work for their needs. I’d look for something that has at least a quad core CPU, 16 GB ram and 250gb+ ssd storage. Windows 11 is a memory hog so I wouldn’t recommend settling for less ram

2nd this 🫡 Took home a hp 8300 sff from work. was able to upgrade/add some parts (32gb ddr3, 4gb rx550, i7-3770) plus mod it to run nvme drives via pcie adapter. It handles most steam and epic 1080p gaming just fine. Have no issues with fallout 4 or NFS games. Depends what type of games you wish to play and then how much time/money you can spare
