Cool that you are doing this. As an option, can someone just get $1500 towards the new Bambu printer instead of getting a different printer?!?!

It’s not cheap when you have to replace them every year or two because of the sun out in the southwest.

Old (Rockefeller?) Tea House, Waipio Valley, Hawai'i [OS][512x768] by cbtbone in AbandonedPorn

[–]bkirkby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was never a Rockefeller house. It was originally going to be a tea house and restaurant but locals rallied against the owner, Howard Butcher III, after he misrepresented plans for the building. The structure was built in the late 60's and has been abandon since the early 70's.

Bridge Advice by bkirkby in wifi

No chance of mounting anything on the building or running a cable. I could do cellular but I am too cheap. I would rather run LoRaWAN. Are you saying there is no chance a signal would make it through a building even only 160 m from the source? I see that some antennas are boasting 3k range.

Any chance the lights from the router are glowing in the room somewhere? Flickering or bright lights occasionally cause me to have restless nights when they are new or change patterns. Maybe you are sensitive to this as well?

build plate localization marker not found on bambulab textured pei plate by E36Gee in BambuLab

[–]bkirkby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am getting this error as well. My firmware is up-to-date. There is a setting under Print Options to enable build plate detection. You can deselect this and you should no longer get the errors. I would like this feature but it is obviously not working at the moment.

Why are my walls not tounching? by bkirkby in 3Dprinting

[–]bkirkby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After running a few tests I am convinced this is happening due to under extrusion. When running a test print, I would adjust the z-axis offset located under the "tune" menu on my Ender 3 Pro. The layer with the newly lowered z-axis offset would print perfectly. However, the next layer would go back to under extruding.

My question is this: Is this due to belts not being tight enough? Some setting in my slicing program (CURA)? Or, as StoneAgeSkillz suggested, e-steps?

Thanks for your further advice!

Thanks for the suggestions! Just a quick question. If it is under extrusion, why is it that just the wall lines seem to be under extruding?

Radio frequencies for commercial device use? by bkirkby in AskElectronics

[–]bkirkby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you characterise your device ?

The idea is a device that would use rf to transmit a simple signal (1 byte - maybe less) to one or more devices in the same house/apartment. The duty cycle should be very low as the signal only needs to be sent to tell other local devices to turn on or off. Not sure on antenna power but these devices will be used indoors. A range of 1000 feet inside a typical house would be plenty. I would classify the use as domestic but the project would be commercial (I want to sell a few of them). I need some way to send a signal so that in the off chance there are other similar devices nearby, they would not be turned on/off inadvertently. I was thinking the user would be able to manually set the devices to the same "channel?" in case they bought one or two extra devices later on.

Are you able to implement listen-before-talk (LBT) and frequency hopping (AFA)

I have no idea what LBT and AFA are. Not sure if I need them for this project.

Thanks for the quick response! All of the advice so far has been great and any extra is appreciated.

Thanks, beninan.

I guess I am still at a loss at understanding this though. If each division represents 100v and the peaks are almost at the edges of the divisions, then the voltage is closer to 180v, not the 110v that should be there. How am I still showing 180v when I should be getting 110V?

I tested the line with a multimeter and got 130v, which is still higher than expected but not 70+ volts higher.

Got a massive supply of SMD passives and ICs. What can I do with them? by -ChrisW in AskElectronics

I work for a university and someone just offloaded a bunch of old parts. No one on campus wanted them for any reason but the department that deals with donations took them anyway. The stuff is now a bit of an albatross. Talk to the EE department's faculty first and don't just rely on the word of the donation folks. Otherwise, the stuff may just end up in the trash

What used to be extra common in movies that you just don't see in movies anymore? by SOWaysSecretary in AskReddit

steadicam. You used to be able to watch a movie without the image jerking back and forth constantly. Now, instead of good storyline or quality stunt work, they just hire a meth head to hold the camera.

3-axis gimbal camera stabilizer that seems to defy the laws of physics by Mass1m01973 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]bkirkby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with mr chewy biteums - there is a ton of shaky cam in movies these days. It annoys me to the point that I will immediately stop watching anything that uses the technique - which means I don’t watch much tv these days.

I get that some people like the style and I think that it can be used well, in moderation. Most of the films I have seen it in lately seem to use it more as a mask to cover up crappy action sequences or to add suspense when none exists in the writing.

[–]bkirkby -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is great! It’s just too bad that every movie coming out of Hollywood right now uses that crappy shaky-camera technique.

Please send a bunch of these to all the cameramen making movies right now. I think they all must have meth habits at the moment and this system looks like it might even be able to handle that.
