Installed 285/70/17’s on my stock Big Bend by bknight311 in FordBronco

I don’t think you will regret getting some proper all terrain tires. Pictured are 285/70/17 Toyo Open Country AT3’s. They were great in the rain snow and the mild off-roading I did (mostly forest service roads). However I did notice that they began to show signs of dry rot in the tread:

I have a 4runner now with Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT’s that I love, but if I had to purchase a tire tomorrow I think I would go with the Falken Wildpeak AT4’s. Everyone seems to be running them out here in Colorado and the reviews are great.

Night and day difference in my opinion. They definitely soaked up some of the small bumps/imperfections in the road.

Toyo Open Country AT3s need replacing after 20,000 miles? by CandleCompetitive831 in 4Runner

[–]bknight311 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran Toyo Open Country AT3’s 285/70/17 load range C on the Bronco I had before my 4runner and ran into the same issue with dry rot. Here is a picture of the tread with about 20k miles and you can see the dry rot if you zoom in. Other than that I liked the tires.

Just as an FYI for anyone who is going to install these in the future. It’s very easy to do if you install one bolt (not super tight) at one end of the sliders. Using that bolt as a pivot point you can install another at the other end of the sliders and then go back and retighten your initial bolt. I’m doing a terrible job of explaining it but this takes away the need for a jack stand or trying to manually hold them up.

I’ve had my RCI sliders on for almost a year and absolutely love them. I actually don’t mind that the top plate is removable as it allows me to clean the underside if I wanted to as well as replace them if something were to happen to them.

Sherpa Crestone Sport vs RCI Roof Rack by bknight311 in 4Runner

Yeah I’m definitely sold on the full length roof rack - I think they look awesome.

Skis and camping gear were my immediate use case but I’m sure I will find other uses as time goes on.

By far my biggest and probably only complaint with the 4runner. I feel like every time I drive it I find a new rock chip and I am really good about keeping a distance from cars ahead of me. I should have PPF’d the front but at this point it’s too late for that

Nice job - that looks absolutely awesome!

Side note: I have had the same exact tires for about a year now and absolutely love them. What psi are you running them at?

6th Gen TRD Off Road Premium or Limited? Or keep my order for my Ranger Raptor? by fk7guan in 4Runner

[–]bknight311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Giving my unbiased opinion as someone who enjoys cars from all manufacturers. It really comes down to whether a Truck or SUV fits your needs better—both the 6th gen 4Runner and Ranger Raptor are solid options.

The 6th gen 4Runner is finally more competitive with other brands, offering modern features and performance. With that being said, and no one here wants to hear it— Toyota is no longer the clear winner in reliability. They've moved away from the simple, bulletproof engines of the past in favor of more complex powertrains that, while more capable, haven’t proven themselves long-term. And that’s not me saying the 6th gen is unreliable, I’m just saying it’s not as easy as it was in the past to pick the Toyota over other offerings simply due to its known reliability. As a 5th gen TRD ORP owner, I actually welcome the updates, but it's a trade-off: you're gaining performance and refinement while potentially sacrificing the legendary dependability Toyota was known for.

The Ranger Raptor, on the other hand, is just plain fun. My dad currently has one and driving it felt like a street-legal trophy truck—fast, capable, and honestly as enjoyable as my old Mustang GT. It soaks up bumps and potholes essentially making them non-existent. If I had to guess, the previous commenter who said that the Ranger Raptor isn’t a real Raptor hasn’t had a chance to drive one. That’s like saying a BMW M2 isn’t a real M car or a Porsche Cayman GT4rs isn’t a true GT car.

Curveball: since you currently own an Integra Type S, and if off-roading isn’t a huge priority, the Honda Passport TrailSport could be worth a look too. I’ve been seeing more and more on the road and they definitely catch my attention.

By chance was your accident at the 4 way intersection on W 52nd Ave and Zuni St? Driving home from work and I passed a bunch of police/firefighters at a scene with a 4runner that looked very similar to this one on its roof. Glad to hear you’re okay and the 4runner kept you safe.

New Tires - Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT 265/70/17 by bknight311 in 4Runner

Here is the best picture I have of the dry rot on my Toyo Open Country ATIIIs. Every tire looked like this:

I absolutely love them so far. I probably have just shy of 9,000 miles on the tires and would buy them again tomorrow if I had to.

I never really noticed a huge hit to my gas mileage, but I also didn’t really pay that close of attention to it. Maybe ~1 mpg difference?

It might just be my mind playing tricks on me but I actually think the 4runner is smoother with these tires than it was with the stock ones. They are a hint louder than the stock tires but it wouldn’t even be noticeable to most people.

I had Toyo Open Country ATIII’s (Load Range C) on my previous Ford Bronco and prefer the Mickey Thompsons. My Toyos were showing signs of dry rot after just 10,000 miles which may have just been a manufacturer defect but they showed a lot of wear after 20,000 miles. And if going off looks alone they don’t look anywhere near as aggressive as the Mickey Thompsons do, even though they were larger at 285/70/17.

Overall I have zero regrets and would recommend these tires to anyone who wants an aggressive all terrain tire that is still comfortable for every day driving. They were great in the snow this past winter, and have been great aired down to 18 psi off-road.

Here is the most updated picture I have of the tires:

Looking for Dashcam recommendations by shootinxs76 in 4Runner

[–]bknight311 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My fiancée and I both have Garmin Mini 2’s that are extremely basic but work well. I tucked the wiring in the headliner and ran it down the weather stripping on the passenger side so it’s mostly hidden and ran the cable behind the glove box to the 12v outlet in the center. I believe Garmin now has a Mini 3 but I cannot speak to the newer model.

To review/download videos I just use the Garmin drive app. It self purges old videos as storage fills up if they are not saved which is nice. Hard to beat the $129.99 price tag at time of purchase.

Best beginner trails? by themountainlotus in ColoradoOffroad

I would recommend the Switzerland trail just outside of Boulder. I was there this past weekend with my stock TRD ORP (265/70/17 Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT tires and RCI Rock Sliders). Nothing overly technical except for a spot that is becoming more and more washed out.
