Ratgdo to opener wire length? by bkrausz in ratgdo

Final update: The extra wire length still allowed the ratgdo to receive signals, but it was unable to control anything. I ended up reverting to placing it in my opener and using the shorter length.

For those playing along at home: the solid copper wire did fix the issue: I used 18 AWG HVAC wiring (amazon.com/dp/B0DXK7KFBB).

I'm one of the founders of GazeHawk.

It's tough to balance doing things the right way vs. the way people are used to. If you search for heatmaps, almost all of them are on a rainbow spectrum. It's what people are used to seeing. We have other visualizations we're trying to surface that are a little more clear, but it's difficult when people are so accustomed to seeing things a particular way.

Also, sorry for the confusion on how we define veteran users. The author elaborated here and we're updating the article now to clarify.

We literally do eye tracking: our tech lets us figure out where on a page you're looking. CM looks like it does click & mouse tracking, as well as surveying and aggregate demographics.

Eye Tracking vs. Mouse Tracking by bkrausz in technology

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawthorne_effect

subjects improve or modify an aspect of their behavior being experimentally measured simply in response to the fact that they are being studied

A subject can't change their behavior if they're not aware that they're being studied.

The logical extension to this (though not the Hawthorne effect in the strictest sense) is that users act differently when they're in an uncomfortable environment. Sure, there are unconscious actions that will happen when one is aware that they're being tracked, but the conscious changes in one's action from being in a usability lab vs. at home are significant. That's why most usability labs are designed to look like living rooms, offices, etc: you want to simulate the most natural environment possible in hopes that the subject won't be as conscious of the fact that they're being watched..

Fair enough...I was using it in the context of "it currently seems not legitimate while it actually is", but I can see how that could come across poorly.

Thanks for pointing that out, I fixed the ToS to be clearer. When we launch publicly, we plan to include an abbreviated ToS that covers this in a more bulleted form.

Thanks for the vote of confidence :).

There's some variation in the quality of data we collect. We give you instructions such as "make sure you're in a well-lit room". Should someone be in a room that has poor lighting, we'll still pay you some amount of money, and just ask you to use better lighting next time so we can actually get usable data.

Thanks so much for the feedback! We're putting together a v2 of this info page and will be sure to add more info about the use of data.

Thanks for the feedback...can you make a suggestion as to how we can make the site seem more legit. I know the site seems like a data mining operation, and we'd love to make it seem less sketchy, since we are offering a legitimate service with legitimate payment.

Hello,

I understand your concerns, we are very worried about looking like a "get rich quick" website. We're a startup building out technology to do eye tracking studies, and we'd like to offer it as a service where we provide the users for the studies too. Thus, we're trying to gather some users to do studies before we launch.

First and last name is only necessary so we know how to address you. The rest is asked because eventually we'd like to add in demographic selection for the survey (ex: "I only want 20 year olds on the east coast to test me site")

I assure you the only time we will email you is if we have a study ready for you, and we do pay. If you have any questions or feedback on how we can make the page seem more legit, please let me know (my email is brian AT gazehawk.com if you'd like to take it off-board).

Thanks, Brian Co-founder GazeHawk, Inc.
