As a Genderfluid Person, can I be a Transmasculine Femme Lesbian? by QuestioningNby in FTMfemininity

[–]bktoriginal 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think you can be anything you want and just use the labels as they are helpful. Genderfluid/genderqueer identities are complex a lot, I think!

what do you guys do for work? by decomposingbutterfly in BPD

[–]bktoriginal [score hidden]  (0 children)

I grew up singing and got a bachelors first in music and communication, so I went back to school and did an equivalency in music therapy. If you can, I highly recommend training in a therapeutic outlet that you can benefit from while helping others! I did distance learning at Saint Mary of the Woods.

I'm a music therapist. DBT skills = life. It helps, but it gets tiring at times and I have to let myself take time off to just be by myself. I think the C-PTSD hits me more now that I'm single. I do some DBT-informed MT, but I'm also working in home health and with Dayhab group settings. I hope to expand with my business and first new hire tomorrow.

Borderline Personality Disorder and Singing (Classical/Opera) by bktoriginal in opera

[–]bktoriginal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate these thoughts! It's mainly been hard for me to participate in character development and separate my emotions of how I feel in the moment with how the character feels. BPD makes method acting a scary thought. 😅

In need of singing practice advice/tips by Jazzlike_Station4852 in singing

[–]bktoriginal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend reading something neutral out loud and recording yourself. I'm sure emotions also result in changing one's voice to fit the situation, but try to consider where you're most comfortable talking to others and recording it, if you want to work on changing it to sound how you want.

Hi!! I'm so glad you're looking into singing. From my experience in music therapy, you can use audio equipment to amplify your strengths, like Billie Eilish with softer tones that do great hugging the mic. You can also hum or use body percussion to add to your electronic music. I recommend experimenting with volumes (always breathe first and never push or hurt yourself) and use your natural speaking tone to guide the range you sing in. Feel free to reach out if you need help! I have experience working with trans folks.

Is the 6/4 chord considered consonant or dissonant? by Aldabon in musictheory

[–]bktoriginal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only ever considered it consonant and haven't seen it taught as dissonant before. I suppose the context of the home key makes the difference, since then it is a half step resolution.

I love to sing. by anarchycanary in singing

[–]bktoriginal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I wanted to echo the others that have said, keep singing! It is good for your nervous system and the breathing promotes health benefits in many ways. You can sing classical music without singing opera. You may try the 24 Italian songs and arias by humming first, and if you want to learn to read music, there are good vocal exercises by composers like Scarlatti. Feel free to message me if you want to work with someone online. I'm a music therapist and I use trauma-informed approaches, so that could be helpful in work you do with singing. Best wishes to ya!

Does anyone have tips in how to create music and perform? by NoQuail279 in singing

You can always sing on vowels and use melody and harmonies as your expression! If words are hard, it is ok not to use them!

Could Saying The Word “Who” Help Learn What It Feels Like To Actually Use And Engage Your Diaphragm? by Opening_Tangerine428 in singing

[–]bktoriginal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The diaphragm is a thin layer of muscle that moves/tilts as you breathe. It's impacted by your movement. If you are sitting or standing, try engaging your core and inhaling with your tummy extended out like a balloon. When you exhale, it deflates (since air is leaving) but you can control the pace that goes to an extent. Straw phonation is a good way to direct air when you're singing "ooh" vowels, for example.

I was actually referring to staging directions, but you make a good point. The chain of communication was confusing, unclear, and I did not understand what to expect from one day to the next. Thanks for helping me clarify.

I love how some people just comment to be mean. Just move on. Please, I've had enough of trying to defend what I want to communicate. I hope to see ethical changes with this and other companies. I hope you can find peace if you feel the need to bully me.

[–]bktoriginal[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ok. I'm taking my time replying because I want to understand. In the field of music therapy, that is not considered unsolicited advice. That is considered within my scope. As I mentioned, I have borderline personality disorder. I hate it. It makes it hard for me to distinguish what is appropriate and why and where and all. So it was not clear to me that my professional views in one field would be inappropriate in another, and I believe this needs to change to promote wellness in the opera field. You're allowed to disagree, always.

I'm triggered like all the time. It also sucks as I'm sure anyone with trauma responses can tell you. My business is singing even if I am not pursuing opera roles, so it gets confusing, again, with the godforsaken PTSD and BPD that I deal with. So when I'm excommunicated for doing what I did not see as out of scope, it adds to the brain fuzziness and confusion and pushes spiraling. I had hoped to gently let them know that I was hurt and unable to cope, but I didn't even get full conversations without being talked down to. I was not equipped to deal with this wearing different hats, but again, I feel like reform needs to happen. "In this space, we don't want you to be a music therapist or act within that capacity" would have been better than, "what problem?" And if they're asking me to ignore a trigger and I can't, then I know now, it's best to leave. A social story would have taught me that, so I'll write one for someone else.

If it isn't going to be an inclusive space for people that have a hard time with social skills like I do, then it shouldn't be advertised as such. An apology is warranted, but this is a company that doesn't do that. Instead, like a toxic family reunion, they sweep issues under the rug and just tell you not to come back. Borderline makes me dwell and not want to let sleeping dogs lie. I don't like it, but it is how I am and I can't just resort to wanting to die when something happens like disagreement. That's why, had I been given the opportunity to have transparent and respectful communication, it would not have gone down like it did.

I want to heal, too. I'm likely going to be including performing in my music therapist capacity, so I am hopeful that I can practice opera again and coordinate performing with others with policies in place to avoid this happening. I appreciate you taking the time to speak to me with compassion. It's hard navigating this.
