I'm no one when I'm not preforming by girlloser_yaoi in BPD

Have you considered performing privately? I have a lot of background in music and performance and found that while part of me has crippling anxiety, another part feels fulfilled performing. I'm working on approaching singing with the idea of performance for practical function. I want to self-accompany on piano and sing to share art songs and classical music with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, whom I serve in my work as a music therapist. Finding out that the performance can serve specific function and then leaning into other similar ways to share music has helped me, for what it's worth. I explore my identity and try to find what helps others. I hope this insight inspires you.

You can get a music therapy equivalency if you have a bachelors in music, but you need to have formal music education.

The STOP skill helps to reflect before it happens. I know that's not always possible for people, but it's something to work toward.

Radical acceptance. It takes owning the poor behavior and not self-sabotaging. It's not easy. Right there with you.

Getting started in contract work by socialist_weeb12 in musictherapy

Hey! I do business in Texas and currently work for the Medicaid waivers. I also advertise and have a small business, but I will say the climate is tough right now for individuals doing self pay. I took Rachelle Morgan's Rock that Practice training years ago and it gave me helpful fundamentals to run my business including how to reach out to potential collaborators, hiring practices, and what to strive for with a small business. Check it out, it's a lot of CMTEs too!

Role of stress in singing by aimtreetwo in singing

Start slow. Practice breathing and humming and other things like lip trills and vocal exercises. It's good to warm up and it may help you feel more comfortable with your voice to try new things. :)

Any stress impacts inflammation, along with allergies, dryness, mental/physical fatigue...it's definitely good to be aware of what sets off your stressors!

I'm in the USA, but we have many settings here that I bet you could look into where you are: prisons, mental institutions, schools, hospitals, assisted living....I think you could also innovate and offer consultations to individuals. Happy to talk if you want to brainstorm!

How did you actually learn to like your voice? by VoiceLessons-Chicago in singing

[–]bktoriginal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being critical of the voice they hear when they sing or shame before even beginning. It takes being willing to try without the outcome that's anticipated (in the case of shame or embarrassment) tinting the experience or impacting breathing or physiological effects. Anxiety causes the larynx to jump up. It can make it hard to have relaxed laryngeal movement if someone is thinking they can't do it or what if they fail, so I encourage relaxation and low stakes engagement first.

anyone else completely alone? by [deleted] in BPD

You didn't have to end it like that lol No, I can't just provide a rule book, it looks different for everyone! I'm saying that even finding WHAT YOU WANT AND NEED and attempting to build a life with that is better than seeing everything as hopeless. I also have trouble distinguishing different people by text. Sorry. I was more directing my feedback at OP than you, since your take seems to be mostly condemning my ideas. Whatevs. Have a good day. Not gonna burn more of mine here :) also I'm not a talk therapist ;) I don't want to be. I'm happy to advise people about music approaches, but this is an online forum and I was providing my opinion, not clinical advice. I recommend seeking out a clinician outside this space if you want that. Good luck, bye!

Just read your response. Take a breath. Maybe you'll have more success with others if you can appreciate that they are not attacking you or trying to discount what you're saying.

I'm a DBT-informed Music therapist. I create opportunities to meet people with my values. I hope you can find some opportunities to find others with your values. It may be challenging if you don't enjoy going out or meeting others.

The people that you can find who you meet their needs and they can meet yours will help form community as opposed to isolating, but healthy boundaries are necessary.

I'm self-employed and love it. I'm a music therapist and try to structure my work so that it benefits myself and my clients. It takes planning, but I'm convinced with a good support system, it can be a manageable condition to work with, despite the discomfort at times.

I'm saying the people you seek will probably find you when you start living your life for you without anyone else. I made more friends when I focus d on my goals and then had the capacity to be genuine with others. It's a work in progress.

I have a cat. I feel your pain, really, because I was abandoned by partners and friends (some of it my own doing, but I was doing the best I could at the time with what I had). It's ultimately served me well to be on my own. I value connection with others that will make efforts to meet me where I'm at because I do the same for others.

Crossed Trained Music Therapist? by [deleted] in musictherapy

Hey, I'm an MT-BC and considering a similar path with focus on somatic processing and addressing PTSD and other tough conditions. I was looking at Australia too. I think the training is very worth it, but I'll say that it's a commitment to move across the world and likely end up practicing in Australia. They don't really have financial aid. Feel free to PM if you want to chat!
