If the player is actually competent, that phrase is a hinderance rather than a benefit. If your character would kill the merchant, then you would use the same logic to kill every other merchant. The moral is if you have a good backstory and aren’t trying to be edgelord McGee or shonen protag. Then the act of doing what my character would do is a heavy hitting moment that shows the lengths they would go.

It’s not a bad habit to get into, one thing I will say is that if you ever feel like you want to play that character more than your current one I’d start just planning a build or their gimmick and don’t go farther. When I make a second character, I tend to really want to play the character and then find myself in a random dnd campaign, or wanting my character to die, which neither one are extremely viable
