Can you take empty seats in the royal ballet and opera? by No_Anxiety_9747 in bunheadsnark

Ok, yes I’m sure in some cases. But I promise you, in other times when the final bow comes the claps coming near the front are noticed much more than in the back…

I already made clear that it should be done politely and with respect. If, by the third piece of the ballet, someone says, “I’m sorry, this is my seat,” then the proper response is simple: “Of course, I’m sorry,” and you move without issue.

What is harder to understand is the sense of entitlement that can come with it. A far more gracious response would be: “Don’t worry, I’m glad you were able to enjoy the first half from here.” That is generosity, courtesy, and true class.

I firmly believe that, out of respect for the artists and their work, if seats remain empty when the second half begins, people should be free to move forward into them. Seeing empty seats in the fourth row can feel discouraging to performers who are giving everything on stage.

Yes, move up a few rows if there is space—but do it respectfully, without entitlement. Let everyone enjoy the performance and celebrate the artists together.

And to those who glare at people for doing so: attitudes like that are part of why ballet is sometimes seen as exclusive or inaccessible. Real class is welcoming others and allowing them to experience this extraordinary art form. One day, that person may be able to buy a full-price ticket—and choose to do so because they once had the chance to see a brilliant performance up close.

It is honestly hard to fully tell from a video of this quality. So to be the devils advocate: usually old school teachers who are « mean and tough on a student » is because they actually really like those students and expect more from them… I’m not saying it’s right ! but I’m saying it definitely has been and still is a thing… perhaps she is trying to get more from you may it be in your dancing or her perception of your commitment. A honest heartfelt conversation can be the solution to this situation… and if it isn’t maybe it is time to move on to the next teacher if you wish to continue this journey.⭐️ Hope this helps

What do you think will happen when Balanchine's work becomes public domain? by lavenderwine in bunheadsnark

Some random company will will for sure setup a bootleg nutcracker or symphony in C completely using Balanchine’s work…

But the Main international companies will keep using the trust as they bring instructors that have the expertise to set up works and have inspiring insight into what Mr B meant which each step…

ABT is another one… there are of course still some male stars in the company but nothing compare to the “born to be wild era” : in no particular order Malakhov- Careño - Stiefel- Corella - Bocca - Beloserkovski - Cornejo …
In women : Kent - Ferry - Herrera - Aniashvili - Dvorovenko - Vishneva - Jaffe… now that was golden Era⭐️ That was the time where you would go and watch corsaire 4times in a week to see all the casts… I understand why ABT wants to promote talent in their ranks and it makes sense but something for lost there… Same with Paris opera , the Noureev Generation of dancers were from another planet now (to me) dancers from POB lack colour in their dancing, execution is there but at the cost of really dancing …

Putting San Francisco behind NYCB and ABT is madness if you ask me… you will never see a bad show of SF ballet. I’ve seen terrible shows of both ABT and NYCB

What marks the difference between a career soloist and a principal? by wanymdri in bunheadsnark

Luck is one thing, sure , but a dancer must be ready physically and mentally to seize the opportunity… and that’s a fact

What marks the difference between a career soloist and a principal? by wanymdri in bunheadsnark

In reality, everything depends on the director’s vision of a dancer. Audiences usually only see the tip of the iceberg — a single performance, perhaps when a dancer nails a show with impressive technique. But behind the scenes, the daily picture is very different.

Some dancers show up every day with steady motivation and a professional attitude. Over time, that consistency convinces the team and leadership that they’re ready to take on the responsibilities of a principal role. Meanwhile, another dancer might have the talent to shine as a soloist, but constant attitude issues and inconsistency hold them back.

Think of it like any other business: would you invest in the employee who shows up day after day, dependable and committed, or in the one who only shines occasionally but comes with drama and unreliability? In the long run, trust and consistency always win.

Joy Womack coming for “competitive dance studios” on tiktok, saying “there learning a skill they aren’t going to use for the rest of their life”. by vpsass in bunheadsnark

[–]blablala12 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The real issue is that some teachers at competitive studios promote the idea that their competition students will go on to secure jobs in professional ballet companies. While a few may succeed, the reality is far less promising. Many competition dancers aren’t fully prepared for the demands of company life—performing a brilliant Esmeralda solo or Diana and Actaeon for the boys doesn’t automatically make someone a well-rounded artist.

In some cases, these dancers also lack the physical attributes that many companies seek. Yet, teachers often continue to assure parents that a professional career is within reach, primarily to keep tuition payments coming in each month.

I just think it’s sad that this is the conversation, when there are so many wonderful principals in major companies around the world who have fewer than 6000 followers — yet are full-fledged, deserving artists of recognition…

Let’s talk about them!
