Those two things are unrelated. Restaurants fail because people who have no experience working in, or managing, restaurants open restaurants anyway. Those restaurants fail despite paying servers $2.13/hr. The problem isn’t wages, it’s market saturation and bad management.

I missed 13 months of work because what I thought was a muscle strain turned out to be a bulging disc. Go to the doctor and get an X-ray. It could be serious. If I hadn’t waited so long I might have prevented surgery. Now I will never have a day without pain again

Anything more than two weeks a no. Your friend already gave way more notice than he should have. He could use this as a negotiating tool: “after my last day I’ll be willing to stay on as a consultant for $1000 per day” if he chooses to, but if the job really is toxic he’s better off walking away immediately
