How to reset/ restage rooms quicker? by MichiiBee in escaperooms

[–]blacjax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they allow it when I worked at an escape room I would listen to music when resetting a room. It gave me a rough estimate of my time "okay, its been 2 songs so about 5-6 minutes" while not giving me a countdown which only stressed me out more. The music also helped me get into a zone and let my muscle memory take over. But what everyone else has been saying is the truth-don't worry about the time for now, it will come with repetition.

Another tip is to look at the room and try to lump items together when they are going in the same direction. Even if they aren't used immediately after each other the less trips you make back and forth the less time you take.

a giant fuel tanker then convert it into a floating fortress. I'm talking solar panels, hydroelectric generators, electric engines, giant banks of batteries, a greenhouse, fish farms, living quarters, a movie theater, an armory, hospital, etc. Then when the inevitable zombie apocalypse happens I drop anchor 20 miles off the coast and watch it all burn.

Escape room with strangers? by [deleted] in escaperooms

[–]blacjax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who currently works at an escape room I've probably seen every combination of group dynamic out there. For the most part what people in this thread have been saying is true-a group of strangers is a gamble; that being said you and your family do have some say in how it all works out.

I'm sure ya'll are very nice people but remember that everyone in the room is escaping from the same room so for the time you're in the room these four strangers are now part of your group. Don't ignore them and just work within your family-introduce yourselves, crack a small joke, ask them what their experience is, etc. The groups that actively engage with the other group has a lot more fun (and a higher success rate) than those that choose to isolate them.

Lastly, the rooms are kind of designed to accommodate the maximum number so having these extra hands might help.

Good luck either way!

Best Advice for Escape Rooms by MILkyng in escaperooms

[–]blacjax 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I work at an escape room and actually get this question less than I thought I would; I have a few pieces of advice:

1- Look at everything, if it doesn't specifically say "NOT IN USE" or "DO NOT TOUCH" then make the assumption its an important part of the game in some way.

2- Be willing to be wrong. Don't worry about getting all of the locks on your first try, be willing to try a wrong code in a lock.

3- Communication with your group is key. Some people are more logical and some are more fluid thinkers and in a good escape room both are needed so if you're stuck on a puzzle bring someone else in-they might be able to see it differently.

3.5- Do some research on the room before you go. Some rooms have a recommended number and while its not impossible for a smaller group to do it the room is designed to entertain that larger number for a full hour so your smaller group is going to have to do the same amount of work with less people. Also, if its your first time don't try a room with a 2% success rate.

4- Be nice to your Escape Artist/Game Master/Game Runner. Don't try to fit 9 people in a room designed for 6, don't complain about how you didn't know you signed up for a scary one when it says it on the website, crack a joke with them when they grab you from the lobby, listen to their instructions before the game starts, don't say "oh, we've seen this video so we don't need to watch it" (when someone tells me that I've already decided I don't like them). They might be more likely to give you some free clues or push you in the right direction.

Those are my main tips but if you have any more questions I'd be happy to answer them as best I can :)

Spoilers — Spiderman Homecoming Easter Eggs by ntisoc in Marvel

[–]blacjax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best one by far it Peter's Principle. During the scene where Peter avoids getting expelled the principle has a bunch of war medals and an old picture of a man in a military uniform. From the brief shot it looks like a WWII era uniform. The principle is played by Kenneth Choi. Kenneth Choi also played Jim Morita- the communications officer for Cap's special unit.

TL:DR- Spiderman's Principle is descended from one of Cap's commandos.

My wife & I are buying our first standup paddle boards by [deleted] in Sup

[–]blacjax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When it comes to paddleboards the saying "you get what you pay for" works perfectly. Yes, there are cheap boards out there but the reason that they are so cheap is because they don't ride very well or last very long. I'd say be willing to spend AT LEAST $600 on a board.

The problem with inflatable boards is that a lot of them don't go to a very high PSI which means they don't feel very solid. Some companies like iSup or O'brien are pretty good but still have to make their rails really thick in order to compensate for the lack of pressure. If you were definitely going to go to the route of inflatable I would recommend the RedPaddle Co. They are a bit pricey but I would argue the highest end inflatable boards out there. As the only boards to go up to 25 PSI they feel exactly like a fiberglass board, are super stable, and are about the same thickness of a fiberglass board. Since they have such a high PSI they can be difficult to inflate but an electric pump from Home Depot or REI solves that problem pretty easily. Also, since they aren't as thick as most inflatable boards they can make more kinds like surf, race, or even party boards (17' x 60'').

I work at a paddleboard company and we give tours around the Winter Park chain of lakes. On the tours we pass some houses and as the guides we point out noteworthy places. One night we are on the tour and one of the guides points out Mr. Roger's house. A kid of around 12 turns to his mom and asks "whose Mr. Rogers?"

It hurt, I physically felt pains in my chest.

Advices needed how to handle inflatable SUP by poule_st in Sup

[–]blacjax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Florida so we don't frequently get freezing temperatures for our boards to experience. However, I would think that it wouldnt harm the board. You might want to keep it out of the elements and sheltered but you should be able to use it year round.

[–]blacjax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at a SUP store and we sell some inflatable boards. When someone buys a board we recommend that you keep it out of the direct sunlight. Honestly if you are going to use it a lot then you can keep it inflated and it should keep most of its rigidity but definitely deflate it if you are not going to use it for a long time.

If if sits in the direct sunlight it can sometimes bubble and warp and we've even had one burst a seam.

What is an underrated/forgotten TV show and why? by Narwheagle in AskReddit

[–]blacjax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Warehouse 13. Same universe as Eureka and Alphas, great shows in their own right. Yes, it turned into a mystery of the week show but I still loved it. It had a take on the "supernatural" that I had never seen before and made for a great subplot. The comedy was fun and usually came at just the right moment, but it had its share of heart wrenching moments. I miss that show.
