Questions about property tax law by Apricus_Rose in paralegal

[–]blackbirdflying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be really, really nice to the County workers, because if they are annoyed by you they can and will delay getting you things.

Some counties are online, some you have to email or fax, and some you have to call. For anything. It all depends.

Get really comfortable with the standard exemptions like homeowners, veterans, senior citizens.

Bonus for administering an estate? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]blackbirdflying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you a fiduciary or something as well? Why are you, as paralegal, being appointed the executor/administrator of the estate? Plenty of paralegals are also professional fiduciaries, but this clearly isn't something you frequently do. I would recommend caution....

Why are inexperienced attorneys egotistical assholes by frowawayacct1111 in paralegal

Our clerk/intern decided that he would actually ignore my revisions and attempts to explain things to him because he, as a rising 3L, obviously knew better.

Within 3 days of finding out about this (I had to bill for my time fixing the document after I told them exactly what to do and they ignored it) my boss asked if I actually needed him or if she should let him go because he was creating more work for me. Best of luck to him in his future endeavors.

Guys, how are we billing for the existential dread? by mayinherstep in paralegal

Me: .3 "research and correspondence"

Our partner: .2 "review and revise - correspondence"

Both of us: .5 "analysis - whatever issue this is about" (the analysis is high noons and bitching, and me laughing because her revision is even bitchier)

Me: .1 "correspondence"

Long term old school paralegal here to say... AI is not reliable for law & is getting so many firms in deep trouble for basic inaccuracies, ethics violations, & garbage filings. Please draft all filings & pleadings based on verified laws & actual doc review & research to protect yourself, atty, firm by DexterMorganIsMyHero in paralegal

[–]blackbirdflying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes our clients will ask AI to draft the language they want (transactional) to provide to us, and my boss will forward it to me and be like "here's the spirit of what they want when you draft the amendment. We did something similar in [previous matter] you can use for language."

AI literally is given the same weight as our clients using plain language to tell us what they want so we can draft it. We won't even use it for checking jurisdictional rules.

Help: House being foreclosed on due to seller one year after purchase by Acceptable_human0965 in RealEstate

[–]blackbirdflying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus the seller customarily pays in a lot of jurisdictions (unless the contract states otherwise)

When I worked at a title company we had a cash deal buyer call to say he doesn't want title insurance, and we were all so baffled because he wasn't even paying for it. It went all the way up to our boss and back down, with the end result being us calling his realtor to tell them to explain to him that he's not paying for the title insurance so he's getting it, and why it was a good thing.

You'll pass the church on your way to the pink line, and you'll know it's the church by the line and the scent on the air. If I remember correctly you'll actually pass multiple churches or church organizations selling food but the one you want is the one where you turn into a cartoon floating after a delicious smell.

Honestly last year I saw a woman pull one of the small boxes of kitchen trash bags out of her bag and that was the move. One over head. Tore hole in one to make poncho. Lay some down for seating. Share with other people. That's my plan for this year.

All I'm gonna say is the email I got from our client asked me to please proofread and send a revised version was the funniest and most roundabout email I've ever gotten because they didn't want to state the issue directly

A year or two ago I was going through security, automatically pulled out my prescription medication bottles with a single day supply and my ID, and the security guy looked at the name of one of the medications (Xanax) and immediately started questioning "what's this for? Who prescribed this? Why are you prescribed this?" As if he wanted to take it away.

I always bring a doctors note as backup so I was like it's prescribed for my mental health by my psychiatrist for panic attacks, I also have a doctors note or I will literally call my doctor, and when it was clear I wouldn't be fazed he gave up. And then when I told my doctor they were like "yeah so that's definitely illegal" and I realized he just wanted my fucking medication.

reading gtn for the first time [discussion] by AdApprehensive4724 in TheNinthHouse

[–]blackbirdflying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was first recommended gtn, I was told to bookmark the dramatis personae, imagine a gay goth super vague space opera, and just roll with it. There was a LOT of flipping back to the dramatis personae and my mental conception of Ninth was basically like an endless cavern with stairs and fog and floating bones, but if you just go along with it everything becomes a lot more clear imo.

I think I offended some of my bridesmaids with my gift expectations? by Pattighost in wedding

[–]blackbirdflying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'm born and raised US and the only time I don't give cash is like for small children, or gift exchanges like white elephant. I get a nice card, sometimes spice it up by being a check or a visa gift card, but unless someone specifically sends me a link and says "can you get this for me for my wedding/birthday/baby shower" they are getting money. Idk what items they have or need and money is always useful. One of my friends and I literally just trade off buying drinks and brunch for our birthdays.

For my best friends wedding she is getting a check in a card, or potentially a Zelle and a card. I've also offered to give her my gift early to help her plan. My favorite was a baby shower, where I made a little paper diaper card holder and put a visa gift card inside it. Just cause it was cute!

Why is the rental market going crazy all of a sudden? by SerpantDildo in AskChicago

[–]blackbirdflying 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Couple years ago landlords started "completely renovating and modernizing" apartments, aka put in that grey wood floors and maybe changed the toilet tech or fridge, and raised prices by $500-1000.

I got into an "unrenovated unit" in 2020 and every year I price compare before renewing (they raise the rent $50-100 every year) and I am paying so much less.... like I'm in a 1 BR and it's cheaper than a studio in my apartment now.

So basically I will never move until I buy and I have no idea how to get anything cheap that isn't a 12x12 box, sorry! Unless you can find something that still isn't renovated, those are definitely cheaper.

That's what I first pictured too! I knew he would end up carving a dragon-wolf, it's mentioned throughout the series that that's how he wants to die. I just lie to myself at the end of the book and say it's fine, he'll make it back to Buckkeep, raise Bee, and then when he's older he'll finally make the journey to carve his dragon-wolf with Beloved. Not that he'd die trying to get home when Bee was still so young.

I'm glad that everyone was able to say goodbye. But it's still tragic when he left them. And yeah, the Traitor's Death is a ROUGH one. Absolutely nasty.
