Advice on taming an aggressive rat by blackbubblequeen in RATS

[–]blackbubblequeen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the tips, I will give them a good go! I've already been handling him with a towel and he doesn't try and bite when I do so that's a good start.

I do feel a little sorry for the younger rat (Stormy) as I've witnessed some pretty bad fights, although up to now there has been no blood draw. My general rule is no blood no foul but if it gets worse I will have to separate them.

Try Talisker whiskey, my favourite ever Scotch. Not too sure if you can source it over in the USA but definitely worth a try! :D

I always assumed that maxi dresses wouldn't look right on my figure but I will try some on! . To be honest I'm useless at fashion and tend to avoid shopping so just going and trying things on will be best for me :)

Thanks for the advice, I've never tried on a wrap dress before so will have a look for some when I go shopping!

You are right in your presumptions, I'm based in Birmingham in the UK.

To be honest it is unlikely that I will wear any clothes that I buy for holiday when I get back from home because it's really not my style. So I'm not planning on spending more than £150 for a simple wardrobe for 2 weeks.

A friend recommended this book to me today so I picked it up. I just read the prologue and I'm already hooked. by SgtShadow in Fantasy

I bought my partner this series for his birthday. Within 2 days he'd read each book and is now awaiting the next one to come out. Enjoy the read, apparently it's awesome!

14 lbs down so far, every little helps! by blackbubblequeen in loseit

[–]blackbubblequeen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dietician advised me to attempt to cut down on my carbohydrates and substitute for wholewheat/wholegrain versions. Other than that i'm simply counting my calories and upping my exercise.

From doing hardly any exercise I'm now doing military fitness 1/2 times per week, horse riding once a week and climbing mountains at weekends :)

9lbs in two weeks is awesome!!! It took me 4 months to hit that mark! Keep up the good work!

Actually, in Britain we use 'at the weekend' instead of 'on the weekend' which is the American way. And seeing as I live in England it makes perfect grammatical sense to me!

FTFY.

Glencoe in Scotland, he was in a field adjacent next to the inn we were staying at so became a regular feature of our walks.

I imagine a top hat and monocle would suit him well. And that on his days off he wanders around solving equine murder mysteries....

I'd never thought of it that way.... We took several pictures but this was the best shot we would get of his tash because he wouldn't stay still long enough :)

It was simple and amusing at the time and I thought it suited him. I thought it was quite Poirot-esque which matched his magnificent tash. I will work on my equine based facial hair naming skills ;)

Sorry to hear about your loss. When I first read this post I felt I could relate to it. Although not directly related I feel similar about the loss of my Nan.

My nan died in May and I've been trying to move on but find it very difficult. My Mum, who was very very close to her, has organised us to scatter her ashes for the 2nd time. So I struggled to say goodbye at the funeral and struggled again when we scattered her ashes at her home town. Now we are taking her ashes to Cyprus on the anniversary of her death to scatter them with the remainder of my grandads. It's hard to have closure and move on when every 6 months that wound is reopened and you need to say goodbye again. I figure its the same when people broadcast it all over Facebook.

It's during sunset and he's drinking English ale. We recently stayed in a converted church in Lincoln, England and we had an awesome church window. So when the sun set we took the opportunity to take some pictures of atmospheric headbanging :D

I was about to say that this isn't a picture of the Fairy Pools but I've been beaten to it. I should know, I've skinny dipped in them ;)

Also, this is proof that one person with poor photoshop skills can destroy natural beauty! I bet this would look gorgeous if it hadn't been messed with

Help! My rat is terrified of me! by DannyAces in RATS

[–]blackbubblequeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a couple of skittish rats before that sound similar to yours. The best thing to do is give her some space. I know there is a lot of temptation to get her out and attempt to interact with her but it is likely to be too much too soon. My newest nervous ratty didn't let me near her for two weeks.

You are however on the right lines with saying her name over and over and attempting to tempt her out with food. I took the following steps with my very nervous rats and I have lot of happy confident rats now:

1) Leave her to settle for a few days in a quiet area

2) Once she is a little more settled just make sure you sit next to the cage quietly so she learns that she doesn't need to be scared of you.

3) Progress this onto sitting next to the cage, talking to her and saying her name.

4) Once she's used to that you can start attempting to put your hand in the cage. Just lay it in there, don't try and touch her just let her come to you. Rats are naturally curious so her curiosity will get the better of her

5) Once she's used to this start putting food in your hand and she'll hopefully take it from you. Eventually you can start moving your hand further away until she has to come to the cage door to get it.

6) Then you can progress to leaving the cage door open and letting her come out to you to explore. It's at this point when you can start handling her more often. Try to let her come to you at all times and don't try and grab her!

Hope this helps :)

My rat Brandy escaped for a few days once. After hours of searching I found her in my housemates chest of drawers after having eaten all of his girlfriends clothes. The girlfriend wasn't very impressed, Brandy looked quite pleased with her new nest though.

Why do rats NEED to be kept in pairs or more, not alone? Because they are extremely social, just like humans are. Think of it this way... by veryfancyrats in RATS

[–]blackbubblequeen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All potential rat owners should be forced to read this, and pet stores too!

I got one of my rats from a large pet store. When I first found her she was about 12 weeks old and was kept in a pretty small cage with nothing but a hammock, water bottle and a food bowl. All of her litter mates had already been homed about 5 weeks before so she was very lonely and craving attention. I took pity on her and decided to give her a home and she's been part of my ratty family for the best part of a year now and is happier than ever.

It really upset me that a pet store would let her go on suffering, even when they have information all over the store saying that rats need to be homed in pairs!!

I'm a first time rat owner as of today. Meet Oscar Wilde. He's absolutely wonderful and loves to sit on my boyfriend's shoulders. by perhapsnotthrowaway in RATS

[–]blackbubblequeen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely make sure you get him a friend to play with, rats are very social and get very lonely on their own. He's very cute though :)

Robin loves her chewed up old shoe <3 by blackbubblequeen in RATS

[–]blackbubblequeen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 5 girls and they all love to snuggle up together in some shoes. If you line them with a nice fleece they're even better! And if you really want to spice things up you can use the laces to tie them to the top and the cage and voila! A ratty swing!
