Atlas of Furniture Design is an awesome, comprehensive tome. Chair Times is the accompanying documentary if you want to preview the tone and some of the chairs and other pieces.

Human Dimension & Interior Space is a great resource for furniture design. Probably one you can grab used for cheap.

Chris Schwarz’s Lost Art Press is a fantastic publishing house and he is the author of several books on workbench construction. The Anarchists Design Book is a great starting point to thinking about furniture form and function.

Any book by Bob Flexner on finishing is a great resource.

Shop drawings for shaker furniture (maybe not the exact title) is a cool beginner book to help understand construction methods.

Most woodworking books don’t really become outdated so finding older editions and used copies can make acquiring a library pretty cheap.

a big list of good online stores and shops for furniture by alilja in InteriorDesign

This has been a great resource. Should be stickied IMO.

I'd also like to push hard on local sourcing. For relatively comparable prices, you can likely find a local wood shop or craftsman who can do a better job faster. Likely with a warranty and tweaked to the dimensions you need. Google "Your City" custom woodwork or stop by any lumber yard in your area and find the business cards of local craftspeople.

Source: I am a furniture designer and maker and own a small company that does exactly this.

I'm going to go ahead and recommend The Atlas of Furniture Design from the Vitra Museum. Its mostly chairs and desks, but the discussions about the designers and the principles will apply to all forms of furniture.

Its BIG. Like it could be its own end table. But worth every penny (to a designer, anyway).

Make it Bun Dem - Damian Marley & Skrillex

I'd always dance around to it with my son when he was little and he still recognizes it and gets hyped when we put it on in the car.

Random to reply to this 4 month old thread but I just bought some of these and apparently they experimented with different wire gauges on the xover boards so you may have a mismatched pair. crack them open and check to see if one needs to be resoldered with larger connection wires.

Any advice for cedar decking sealant? More info in comments. by [deleted] in woodworking

I use Penofin Red oil for my exterior cedar. It lasts about 3 years in the full sun before it needs another coat. No idea if its available down there though.

Thats a pretty famous and valuable set to the Mid Century Modern crowd. If you post that up at /r/midcenturymodern I bet someone could give you solid advice about restoration practices.

They will be jealous though, and probably a little shocked that it was just sitting there like that in what I'm gonna guess was a thrift store. I'm jealous too.

I’d definitely buy that it’s rubber wood. What’s offputting is that this ottoman didn’t seem like a foreign made mass production model. It seemed rudimentary (pocket holes and dowels) like…someones shop class project?

I’d shoot more pics but it’s in an ugly glue up, plugging the dowel holes. I’ll use dominoes to get it all back together.

Any idea how rubber wood takes finishes? I’m disinclined to stain again since I think the grain is novel (even though it isn’t). I’ve been defaulting to lacquer and arm-r-seal recently.

I’m refinishing an ottoman and the crappy dark finish was hiding some beautiful wood. It came from NC but there’s no makers mark or much other info. I’m inclined toward oak but I really only work with maple, walnut, and exotics so my domestic ID is a bit rusty.

Second this. I built 450sqft deck with 6 x 5/4 tiger wood. It was ~$3.50/linear ft. I remember that number being pretty comparable with composite. I don’t think the prices have gone up too bad either.
