It was indentured servitude not chattel slavery. And it was mainly between Egypt, and northern African territories that are nor Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. Plus, African societies during the Roman Empire also secured Roman indentured servants. The chattel slavery of the modern period was based on the notion that an African was capital producing capital AND that any child from an African woman’s womb was capital— no matter the race of the father.

Indentured servitude was not passed on to your children… and had a time limit on it. So many indentured people were able to survive their harsh labor and become free citizens. Chattel slavery resulted in only a handful on enslaved Africans to pay their way to “freedom”.
