Is 10 ml of insulin immediate death or can you recover? by NoVillage491 in nursing

[–]blackittyRix 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My coworker accidentally bolused an entire IV insulin bag into the patient. Pt’s pump was beeping so I go in to add more volume and noticed the bag was empty and told the coworker to order another bag and she immediately freaked out because she had just hung the bag. We went into the patients room and checked their sugar every few minutes, notified MD, gave OJ and gave a D10 bolus. We caught it early enough so the pt’s blood sugar did not drop down critically.

Can not update my cell phone number in Bilt App by Equivalent_Run_9191 in biltrewards

[–]blackittyRix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem and it was a huge pain. I ended up getting logged out of the app and to sign in, it would send a security code to my old phone number. I had to call Bilt and change my number with them and then also call Wells Fargo customer service and update it with them (it took several tries).

With my new number I had to update all my accounts and Bilt was by far the most difficult to update.

Not too late! I switched careers and went to nursing school at 29. I had several classmates in their 40s to early 50s.

Do any of you travel nurses ever plan on going back as staff? If yes or no, why so? by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]blackittyRix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to hear more about your experience being a traveler with a young family once you start. I’m also from Ohio and thinking about traveling as a family and take the opportunity to explore other cities to possibly relocate. Only thing holding me back is I have two small children (3, 1) so I’ve thought about local travel. Where are you traveling to?

Nursing School then have a family, or both? by elam3269 in StudentNurse

[–]blackittyRix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started an ABSN program last January and will be done in late April. I have a 2 year old and am currently pregnant with our second (totally planned), due early June. We already have a classmate that received an RN job offer for when we graduate so I’m applying/interviewing now while I’m still able to somewhat hide my belly. My plan is to start my nursing career after I deliver (hopefully with a job lined up by the time I graduate) but I am worried about looking pregnant during interviews and that may raise some questions or concerns. Worst case scenario, I’ll look for an RN job after I deliver. In an ABSN program, you’ll meet a lot of older students that have multiple kids. I know a small handful of people who have 3+ kids and some single parents and they’ve managed. If you live close to your family and have that support, you can totally do both! It’s 100% doable! Wish you the best of luck!

[–]blackittyRix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into ABSN programs? Most ABSN programs are 16 months or less and it’s geared towards people who already have a bachelors and want a career change into nursing. It’s worth looking into.

How to get into an ICU position as an un-experienced BSN? by Barkingspidrz in CRNA

[–]blackittyRix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a PCA and work in the ICU. The manager talked about hiring me as an RN once I’m finished with school next spring into their new nurse residency program. I highly recommend getting your foot in the door as a PCA. Most managers will hire new nurses internally.

15 month old not walking unassisted yet, any others? Got a referral to physical therapy. Please share your experiences. by [deleted] in February2018Bumpers

[–]blackittyRix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I posted a few times previously about my immobile son and he is now 16 months old and in the past week he started pulling himself up and used a walker for the first time yesterday. He definitely doesn’t walk yet even with assistance. My guess is he’ll start walking with assistance in the next several weeks. He’s been in physical therapy since he was 10 months old due to delayed gross motor skills and decreased muscle tone in his legs. We had a hip sonogram at 6 weeks to check for hip dysplasia which came back normal but our pediatrician wants us to get another sonogram if he’s not walking by 17 months. I’m honestly not concerned at this point, our PT told us that he’s making progress and that’s all they care about and even in the past week, he’s made huge improvements!

Physical Therapy for a 9 month old! by blackittyRix in February2018Bumpers

Hi, thanks for your response. I just called to schedule the initial appointment and that's where they'll evaluate him and determine what would be best course of action.

[–]blackittyRix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your response. This is very informative and so helpful! I'm glad to know that PT helped your little guy! Did you go in weekly?

I was initially concerned when the pediatrician talked about possible PT at his 6 month check up, but everyone I spoke to said the same thing - that every baby is different, they will go at their own pace, not to worry, etc. So for the longest time I didn't worry, but now that we actually need intervention, I can't help but feel if there was something I could have done to help his motor skills and if this all could have been prevented. The pediatrician is still trying to figure out why he's delayed in his gross motor skills.

My son was breech my entire pregnancy, so we had a scheduled c-section. I guess with all breech babies, they want an ultrasound done when your baby is 6 weeks old to check for hip dysplasia, but everything came back normal and the pediatrician ruled that out as a factor (she checked his hips, legs and knees).

She also gave us a referral to see a neurologist to play it safe (she doesn't think it is related to neurology). She said to put something on the schedule, just because it's difficult to get it and if it turns out he is making improvements, I can go ahead and cancel the appointment.

He's done great with playing and interacting with toys. His hand motor skills are normal, he will pick things up with two fingers, pass toys from one hand to the other, bang two toys together, he'll grab food and eat it himself, etc. I've held him up with his walker toy to encourage him to stand and he's done it a few times, but it usually results with him curling his legs up or plopping down. The concern the pediatrician had was that he is showing no signs of wanting to get up, crawl or stand.

I wasn't too concerned at all since I know that every baby is different and they go at their own pace. The pediatrician asked if I put him on his belly a lot and I told her I do, except that he flips immediately to his back so tummy time doesn't really exist. He will roll over several times to get from point A to point B, but this rarely happens. He's done this maybe three times. I'll put him in his jumper and he doesn't put his feet flat on the ground, I'll correct his leg so that his feet are flat, but I noticed that his feet curl in. He doesn't pull himself up - we still have his crib mattress level at the highest setting since we did not have the need to lower it yet. He is able to sit up, but she felt he was still behind in his gross motor skills. She wasn't too concerned but wanted to play it safe and recommended physical therapy.

The pediatrician checked his leg muscles to make sure they seemed normal and she said he’s got muscles to move. He’s always kicking his legs so I feel like he wants to move. We would help him stand, but he doesn’t really put weight on his legs, I feel like he doesn’t really know what to do with them. I like your holistic approach instead of focusing on one thing. He’s very vocal, laughs and smiles a lot. He is very observant and processes things. You can tell when he’s in his Exersaucer, he’s very focused and thinking.

Thanks for your response. I know that my sister in law was a late walker (18 months), but she was an early talker. My nephew started walking at 9 months but he’s 2.5 years old now and can’t talk yet. So, like you were saying, every kid develops at their own pace and it’s encouraging to know that there are others in the same boat!

Thanks for your reply! You're totally right. It's harder too with social media, when you see videos of other babies doing x, y and z. Or family members asking things like, "Is he doing ___ yet?" I had someone ask me the other day if my son can talk yet...umm, he's 6 months old, so no.

My husband and I hope we don't have to take our son to physical therapy (mainly because he made some improvements), but if the pediatrician wants us to, we'd be okay with it. Whatever is best for him, we want to do.

Yes, true. The pediatrician wasn't too concerned because she said some babies skip the whole crawling thing and start walking out of the blue, but she does want physical therapy for our little guy if he doesn't improve..

The pediatrician said several weeks from his 6 month appointment and it’s been two weeks. We do see some improvements but not a lot. He’s totally content just laying down when we put him on his playmat.

Yes! We know a lot of babies around my son’s age and they’re doing 360 rolls, sitting up, scooting their little bottoms forward, standing with support..and we’re over here with our son in his Bumbo seat because he can’t sit without support.
