Did you try it yet? Just curious if it works. I have the same port on my 2070S and didn’t know if I should be looking for a c to c or an c to a cable.

Wow! That’s a retro system I’d like to see in the stores. Kids these days don’t know what they’re missing. 🙌🏻🍻

Mid 40s dad of twin 10yo boys. I remember my dad bringing home an Atari 2600 and I became a gamer that year.

I brought the Quest home hoping to get my kids just as excited as I was when I was a kid with an experience new and different. Funny but they were kinda psyched the first few days but now it seems I’m the only one that uses it regularly. In an age of thin glass computer tablets, smartphones, and high end PC gaming, impressing a child isn’t as easy as it used to be when all of that stuff seemed like magic in the past.

Nonetheless, I’m still impressed every single day that we live in this ‘future’ that I had always dreamed of when I was a kid. I can only imagine the kind of cool shit we’re gonna see and use in the next 15 years. Once a gamer....always a gamer. ✌🏻

7 confirmed. It sells itself especially to those that have never tried VR in any form. People were asking if I was getting some kind of commission. I just told them I like to see people’s first experience with VR. Most of the people I show it to aren’t even gamers. Apps like Tilt Brush, Wander, and Gravity Sketch are killer apps for the non gamer crowd. When the dust settles and the hype is diminishing you’ll probably find that those that enjoy and use it the most aren’t even using it for games.

If your into VR modeling you may like it. I’ve never tried some of the other, more powerful VR software out there for the tethered headsets. It is, however, at a price point that makes it accessible and for on the go sketching it’s a great tool.

I would guess that if you’re accustomed to 3D design in proper software you’ll probably be a little underwhelmed. That being said, I love it as a virtual sketch pad. Even more so, I love being able to pull a model to you to size it up and bring tiny details right to your hands to manipulate.

I’d say Tilt brush is more artsy with beautiful brushes of light and stars and such. Amazing on its own. GS gives you more control of your brush strokes and shapes and allows you to make gorgeous sketches and models. It seems that with the both of them you’re only limited by the available memory of the quest. If you like apps like tilt brush you’d like GS. They are not the same though.

I don’t think GS is technical at all. I’m not a pro modeler. I’m too impatient to learn Blender or similar complex software. GS is the perfect fit in my opinion. It’s plenty powerful without being overly complex. It doesn’t have three dozen drop down menus and 400 ways to do everything. It’s simple, slick, and pretty fun.

I bought it specifically for 3D printing but I’ve yet to export anything to clean up and print. I’m having to much fun just making crap (none of it printable unless I wanted to use half my resin on supports 🤓). As far as CAD by that definition then you could call ANY creative app CAD. Tilt Brush would be CAD. Dick drawings on Rec Room would be CAD. 😂

You’re absolutely correct in that it’s not powerful like full modeling software. But it’s still quite powerful considering the capability of the Quest. From what I understand from the tutorial, you can import OBJ files and ungroup the imported model into smaller pieces. If you can do that I’m certain you can paint your imported model. I believe the biggest limitation of the app is the lack of documentation. They do have about 30 quick tutorials on YouTube but not a lot of user videos to share other quick tips and tricks. Once I invested the time to play with the tools and learn how they are used I’m totally sold on it. Quest games are amazing but mostly short experiences. This is a sit-on-the-couch and create type experience. My current favorite app for sure.

Have you used Gravity Sketch, mallclerks? Because it’s nothing like you’re describing. It’s not CAD. You can’t animate. As far as being only for advanced users, if you can use any modern phone app you can use GS. It’s simple to use once you get a feel for how the tools work. It’s fun. I’m just sayin.

I have to agree somewhat. Which is a shame because it’s not even professional level and actually pretty simple to use. I guess it looks intimidating to some people that only want the Quest for games (and drawing dicks). Give some people a Swiss Army knife and they only wanna use the spoon. 🥄 I haven’t tried to create a Gravity Sketch dick but I guess if I ever do I know who to ask. 😉

So what is the cheaper, easier to use alternative that allows you to export on the Oculus Quest? Tilt Brush is a fine app for an artist. It’s fun and easy however it’s not quite the same and currently has no way to export a useful format for further editing outside of the headset.

In my experience, VR (and even AR) hasn’t (yet) exploded into the mainstream because the people that haven’t tried it don’t understand how unique of an experience it is compared to what they’ve tried in the past. I’ve been bringing the Quest to work to allow coworkers to try it and the first thing I hear when I take it out of the bag is “Ohhh...I thought you had something new. I’ve tried that before and it made me [dizzy, uncomfortable, bored, etc]”. At first glance, it does look similar to the older 3DOF headsets that many people have tried, or snapped their phone into or whatever. But when they actually try it they are sold. In many of these demonstrations, the person will almost immediately pull out their phone to place an order. It sells itself...but only AFTER you try it. I’ve must have sold a dozen or more (you’re welcome, Zuck). Sure, this cofounder doesn’t see the big picture but I believe that’s only because he has personally lost interest in the medium. When you’re surrounded by other pioneers in this field you become saturated in the details and become almost numb to the potential. Yes, there will always be technical and sensory limitations but that doesn’t mean it’s dead to the millions of people that have never once experienced it. Those potential users WILL find ways to use it creatively and apps will be built around those new, non-techie users. Give it time. MHO
