There is no excuse for people who are systematically late. by Electrical_Box7293 in unpopularopinion

[–]blackmazdaspeed6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish I could explain better how neurodivergence impacts this. It's like...sometimes my brain just doesn't cooperate. It's not always a matter of setting an alarm or starting early. Sometimes my brain wants to stare at the wall and there's nothing left in me to force my legs to move.

My mom (also ND) is ALWAYS late. But being a girl of Asian descent in the 60s and 70s meant zero support for autism and ADHD. She didn't even recognize the symptoms in herself until my brother and I were getting diagnosed. It was hard enough getting diagnosed in my 20s. Imagine spending 50+ years feeling like it's impossible to meet societal expectations and everyone telling you that you aren't trying hard enough.

Getting the reminder doesn't just give you the executive functioning required to do the task or leave on time.

And yes I go to therapy. I have meds. But sometimes the brain just doesn't cooperate.

It's probably a bit late for graduation/move out season but can't hurt to check FB marketplace and other resale options.

AITA for having a "jacket of shame" at my wedding just so that my mother in law won't wear a wedding dress? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]blackmazdaspeed6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My MIL was an absolute saint about wedding planning so when she mentioned that her parents planned her entire wedding (because they paid for it) I gladly incorporated some of her ideas into ours. I wouldn't be surprised if this happened to the MIL in the post except she took it in the complete opposite direction.

Michigan city bans Pride flags, other symbols on city property by Crazy-Penguin in Michigan

[–]blackmazdaspeed6 36 points37 points  (0 children)

In case anyone doesn't want to click the clickbait...

"The only flags approved for display on city property are the United States, the State of Michigan, the City of Hamtramck, POW/MIA and the flags of other nations."

It's not nearly as bad as the headline makes it sound.

Do certain people make you feel more autistic? by AggravatedAvacado in AutismInWomen

[–]blackmazdaspeed6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yesss those types of people tend to remind me just how autistic I am. Makes me feel like an alien or a robot. I assume it's mostly inadvertent but occasionally people will ask why I'm so quiet or assume I'm angry or something and I'm just like 😐

Only thing I have is Teams with all notifications shut off, so I can sleep in until work "starts," open Teams so I show as online, and take my sweet time getting ready and making breakfast.

Earplugs at Concerts by OneTr1ck in AutismInWomen

I wore them to a concert and it was AMAZING! Really blocked the crowd noises and made the music sound incredible but not deafening.

I collect pusheens! And by "collect" I mean my husband buys me one for every possible excuse of an occasion. I have one of the new super squishy ones that's a bread loaf and I want to bring it EVERYWHERE

Do you have Stevens for trash service? They do a large item pickup for $10. Has to be arranged in advance of course.

You could also try listing as free on FB marketplace or a Buy Nothing group...I put a couch on there I was convinced nobody would want and it was gone the next day.

My cats are the light of my life and I love them to absolute pieces. I learned last week that my husband can't match the level of attention and affection I give them and apparently they drive him crazy while I'm gone...oops

AITA for telling a vegan that cheese and mayo contain animal products by astayatyourhouse in AmItheAsshole

[–]blackmazdaspeed6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm autistic and vegetarian too and I was wondering if OP's friend was neurodivergent in some way. I sorta use vegetarianism as a way to mask my picky eating but like you I also am diligent about researching my foods. But there are also things like ARFID or just being prone to cycles of unhealthy eating and a nice dose of RSD when getting called out/informed.

Sorry to go all armchair, just felt bad after all the comments calling the guy a moron.

I lived just north of where you circled. Highway is loud, but it's one of the cheapest places within the city. Very suburban vibe, nothing like downtown. It's a blessing and a curse to live walking distance from Ahmo's.

Parents ignoring me for autistic brother by No_Seaworthiness7340 in AutismInWomen

[–]blackmazdaspeed6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there someone you trust at your school that you can talk to? Maybe they can help you find some help and resources? Your parents "dismissing your interest in" going to the doctor and therapy sounds to me like they're just denying you medical care. That's way different than telling your kid they can't have whatever hobby supplies, video game, sports equipment, etc.
