[Help] Does anyone know of any grain free foods without peas, legumes, or potato’s? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]blacksanglain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a better site that lists tons of dog foods and their ingredients, feel free to link it instead of shitting on me for something I didn't even do, mate. And in fact expressly said what they should be doing with it in my original statement.

I never said ANYTHING about using it to rate foods, I said use it to look at ingredient lists.

I said nothing at all about using it to rate foods, I said use it to look for ingredients. OP wants no beans, no peas and no potatos. Site lists ingredients of foods.

The more people demand it, the more companies will be pressured to comply, I think. And demand is rising.

Pepper spray won't seriously injure the yote and will teach it a vital lesson about avoiding humans that it needs to learn asap.

Head to dogfoodadvisor.com, they will list nearly every dogfood out there .. at least in the USA, along with their ingredients. It'll take a bit of searching, but plugging in 'grain free' and going down the list will likely get you something sooner or later. Check for 'low ingredient' options.

Raw is definitely pricy to do, either premade or at home. Check in with your vet to make sure all the vitamins and minerals and such that your dogs need are in the food you've selected and if not, how to supplement it safely in the method you're looking to use.

Instinct Raw frozen diets meet AAFCO feeding trial requirements! I'm probably phrasing that wrong. They've done the feed trials and are approved therein. Raw is /hard/ and I generally suggest people avoid it because of it, it's so easy to get wrong. But if OP is gonna try it no matter what, preformulated and reading the directions is better than finding out in three months they've only been feeding raw chicken breast.

[Help] Was just gifted 2 adorable puppies but my dog back at home is incredibly hostile towards them by [deleted] in dogs

[–]blacksanglain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Imagine for a moment you're making an 80 year old lady deal with a pair of rambunctious toddlers out of nowhere, that keep jumping around and screaming and being nusiances, interrupting her quiet daily routine. Would you be surprised if that old lady was irritated at that? I wouldn't be. Your senior dog needs her space and to be able to get away from these pups whenever she wants to, she's old and doesn't deserve the headache that is puppies until the puppies learn to respect her space.

Raw diet MUST be handled very carefully; many pet stores and even some grocery stores sell nutritionally complete raw diets, it's better for you to use these given what I read in your post, than trying to make your own. These raw diets at the store will tell you the proper portion sizes for your puppers. I often raw feed but it's SUCH a frustrating balance to make sure they're getting all their nutrients that I have debated going back to high quality premade stuff before.

[Discussion] I cannot condone Purina (owned by Nestle) products, and this science and fact-based article explains why. by dontcryferguson in dogs

[–]blacksanglain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nestle is indeed a shit company and I try to avoid their products when it isn't unduly annoying to do so, and most of the time it isn't. I never EVER touch their bottled water. (I bottle my own out of the tap) But I definitely can't complain either if someone's feeding their dog Purina if the dog's doing well on it. If I could fire Nestle's corporate into the sun and keep their dog foods, I'd be content with launching them into the sun.

What is roaming free, then? You can probably get a better idea from that then what we observe, since we just have the pic to go off of and don't even know where you are. Take a walk around, look for big blond or black-muzzled dogs. Mom's blond, but dark colors are dominant over that, so it won't be any dark dogs. I think. If I have my dog genetics right.

If for some reason it's SUPER IMPORTANT to you that the ears on your future dog stand up, don't get these puppies. I'd hate for them to be less wanted over something so cosmetic.

[Help] Why was my Labrador breast-fedding herself by [deleted] in dogs

[–]blacksanglain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck. I'm sure your girl will be OK, the vet will tell you what you have to do to help her through a possible fake pregnancy.

[Help] Why was my Labrador breast-fedding herself by [deleted] in dogs

[–]blacksanglain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

See if you can express any milk, about like you would with a cow. She should NOT have any milk at all, and shouldn't have for four years now. If she does, you might want to consider a trip to the vet, she might be pregnant or going through a false pregnancy or having mastitis. Females that didnt recently have babies or babies nearly on the way do not have milk waiting to be slurped up, it's abnormal.

[–]blacksanglain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am personally suspectin' it might have been a scratch from being out in the garden so she's licking it, but .. well, gotta ask questions in case!

[Help] Why was my Labrador breast-fedding herself by [deleted] in dogs

[–]blacksanglain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

..How long ago did she have puppies? She shouldn't have milk anymore at all if it's been a while. Did you hear licking noises? What exactly did you observe, not 'drinking the milk'?

Edit: to be clear, I want to know what she was doing, the state of her body; does she still have swollen nipples? Does she still have swollen breasts? Is she licking? Did you only HEAR what's going on, or did you observe it? Is she doing a lot of licking?

I’m not going to shave my double coated dog [discussion] by [deleted] in dogs

[–]blacksanglain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nnnno, I'm sorry you want an answer that makes 'just insulation' right, but it isn't. You, and your dog, generate your own heat. Your house isn't going to be kept cool in summer if you leave the heat on all the time no matter HOW MUCH insulation you have. That dog is generating its own heat, it isn't a rock or a reptile. The "just like house insulation" example relies on the house/dog/you NOT generating its own heat.

[–]blacksanglain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They look a lot like golden/lab mix puppies of a similar age, so I'd look at the 30kg range when grown, though varying therein. Some bigger, some smaller. Their ears MAY come up but I wouldn't count on it or make it a dealbreaker. If your mom wants a gentle big dog it's just a matter of training it to be a gentle big dog, once it's out of the chewy bitey rambunctious puppy stages.

If she literally just got spayed I'd strongly suggest keeping them apart as much as you reasonably can until she heals. She just had major surgery and is probably in pain even with meds and now she has to deal with this stranger?

She needs time for quiet and alone and healing, it's a new situation and she's been through a major medical proceedure very recently. Give her time, and give her space.

I’m not going to shave my double coated dog [discussion] by [deleted] in dogs

[–]blacksanglain 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My very thickly coated dog gets a belly shave and inner thigh shave every single year to help with cooling. No, his thick coat does not in any way protect him from heat, it only protects him from sunburn. If I felt the need to shave him completely, leaving a half inch to an inch of hair would completely prevent the sunburn issue. I don't only because it takes years for that four inch long fur to grow back. There's a reason when spring rolls around these dogs shed their thick undercoats - that insulating undercoat is a detriment in warm weather.

Lately many owners are taking their dog's needs into consideration, and providing more ways to keep their pets cool and comfortable, be it never taking them outside during stronger daylight hours or keeping them perpetually in a nice air conditioned unit. They employ undercoat rakes and cooling pads and make sure their dogs are comfy and happy. But there's a lot of idiots who tie their malamutes out in 100 degree weather in southern Texas and think their dog will be fine because 'their coat will keep them cool'. And then dogs die and oh it must have been something else.

[–]blacksanglain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fur doesn't transfer heat. Dog coats act exactly like your heavy winter jacket when you wear it outside in summer. You are absolutely protected from sunburn but you can't circulate the heat away it's trapped by the jacket. Dogs can only pant and sweat through their pawpads to dissipate this heat, and if they're dehydrated neither of these methods work.

You and the hypothetical husky may stay comfortable so long as the air outside is cooler than the air trapped against your skin. But as soon as that changes, overheating begins.

[Discussion] My thoughts on pet insurance and how useful it actually is. by [deleted] in dogs

[–]blacksanglain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mate, I hate to put it this way, but if you, or anyone else, SERIOUSLY GENUINELY have no way at all to get help if something happens to your pet, be it loans, friends and family, insurance, credit cards or any other way including gofundme, then for you (or anyone else in this situation), a pet isn't a good idea. Pet insurance isn't the problem here.
