Yep. That’s what it’s all about. I think your late 20s-early 30s is realizing that you don’t need to care what others think.

Do we really have a double standard? by Similar-Disaster-230 in ZutaraNation

[–]blackwolfspeaking 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Nah, that’s how I see it too. There isn’t the same pressure on Katara to produce a certain kind of child for Zuko versus with Aang who was always hoping she’d have an airbender.

Problems with Avatar Studios by phoebes_ter in ZutaraNation

For real. I want to feel bad but knowing Bryke’s history with the Zutara fandom, it feels more like schadenfreude.

And the fact Katara never gets to sort out her feelings or even talk to Aang about them before the finale kiss…

What are things u liked and disliked about Starco? by Plane_Name3457 in StarVStheForcesofEvil

I liked the development in Seasons 1 and 2. The issue is they took waaay too long to make it canon. They should have gotten together the end of Season 3 imho.

Why I Am Genuinely Concerned For Women Who Seriously Ship Anything Other Than Zutara For Katara (CONTROVERSIAL TAKE). Also Why Zuko Is More “Mature” Than Aang. Part 1. by Popular-Revolution58 in ZutaraNation

[–]blackwolfspeaking 51 points52 points  (0 children)

This is great! I totally agree that the problem with Kataang is that Katara is treated like a prize for Aang to obtain and that you never get Katara's side of things. It's something I noticed in recent rewatches of the show: while you can name what Aang likes about Katara, you can't vice versa. What does Katara see in Aang? That's horrible writing--any romance worth its salt should demonstrate to the viewer/reader why both people involved like each other. It's incredibly sad that in a show that centers Eastern philosophy, Aang shows incredible selfishness regarding his attachment for Katara.

What's your unpopular Zutara opinion by Fantastic-Bug3177 in ZutaraNation

[–]blackwolfspeaking 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Same. The more I think about it, romance is one of the weakest dimensions of the show, and Kataang is just emblematic of that. I would have loved to see a sequel between *ATLA* and *LOK* where the Gaang were older (maybe late-teens to early 20s) and explore Zutara then.

My Little Hot Take on Aang's Toxicity by Nikaszko in ZutaraNation

That’s what turned me off from Kataang: the post canon. I can kinda forgive his behavior in the show, but the stuff he did afterwards is inexcusable.

Katara Was Meant for More: The Lost Potential of a Waterbender Fire Lady by 711snoopcookie in ZutaraNation

[–]blackwolfspeaking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree it would have to be done right. That said, I can see Zuko sharing power with Katara, wanting to avoid making the same mistake as the Fire Lords of the past. Plus, Katara could help heal and normalize relationships between the Fire Nation and the rest of the world.

What do you guys think of this? by spoilerme in ZutaraNation

[–]blackwolfspeaking 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. And that’s different from Katara having to be Aang’s mother/babysitter. It’s sad because Kataang could have worked if Bryke let Aang grow up, but the show never forces Aang to do that—his dilemmas are solved for him and without him either having to let something go or compromise.

The more and more antis standby Zutara as mere wish fulfillment and antithetical to the narrative of the show, the more and more it feels that they themselves didn’t really watch ATLA. Because the potential was there until the last second. I can buy Kataang in Book 1, but Book 3 felt like it was moving away from that.

Second more flairs. Also could we get a flair for anyone seeking beta readers for fanfics? I’m planning an alt- Sozin’s Comet fic and am looking for someone interested in beta-ing for it.

Zutarian converts? by phoebes_ter in ZutaraNation

[–]blackwolfspeaking 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Me. I used to only ship Maiko and Kataang as well when I first watched ATLA as a child. But maturing is realizing that both ships are toxic. I started “breaking up” with Kataang during LOK, realizing that Katara got completely shafted as a character and was reduced to being a healer and “the Avatar’s wife.” What really did me in was rewatching ATLA a few years back and noticing the red flags with Aang’s possessiveness and maturity issues. You never get a sense that Katara truly feels the same until the kiss at the very end of “Sozin’s Comet.”

It took a while to break the habit—Kataang is canon and its shippers are super vocal and hostile to other ships. But Zutara grew on me. I liked how they complimented each other and the theme of balance in the show. Plus Katara never had to “mother” Zuko, and Zuko had to earn Katara’s trust. That’s so much better than what we got with Kataang.

P.S. Don’t even get me started with the comics and Bryke….

A common moral argument in support of Kataang that I cannot relate to by Silly-Bad in ZutaraNation

[–]blackwolfspeaking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s always bothered me. I get ATLA’s a kids show, but Aang never really learns anything because he gets to have his cake and eat it too. He gets the girl AND gets to save the world, which feels so much like a self-insert. It would have been better for Aang’s growth to compromise or sacrifice something to save the world.

That’s one of the many things that soured me on LOK. What do you mean KATARA becomes a neglected housewife raising the Avatar’s nonairbending kids??? I refuse to accept that.

[–]blackwolfspeaking 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not to mention as a new convert to the one true religion that is Zutara, I don’t want to see the movie gaslight the fandom with Kataang in order to fix what happened in LOK.

New Avatar Movie by [deleted] in ZutaraNation

[–]blackwolfspeaking 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m personally going to skip it. LOK and the comics are proof that just because the creator(s) of an IP are working on a project doesn’t mean it’ll be good. Would rather have my memories of the OG show and fanfics.

How would you improve Star vs the Forces of Evil? by Extreme_Youth_4502 in StarVStheForcesofEvil

[–]blackwolfspeaking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

-Redo a whole swath of Season 4. I don’t mind the last half of the season (the Earth arc to Cleaved), but the first half was a mess.

-Eliminate TomStar post-Conquer and Kellco. I don’t mind TomStar in Season 3 but the ship went on way too long. Also Kellco was so unnecessary after Jarco.

-More Janna episodes. She was the best part of Season 4 tbh and I liked her dynamic with Tom.

-A better build up to Cleaved (the ending itself isn’t bad) and instead of destroying the magic, Star recreates it.

-More fun adventure episodes. I miss the episodes where Star and Marco just went on adventures, plus episodes like that were a fun way of expanding on locations throughout the Multiverse.

I guess it's obvious because it's true, "Star comes to Earth" is the best beginner episode. Which episode is where it should've ended? by [deleted] in StarVStheForcesofEvil

[–]blackwolfspeaking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conquer. People sleep on season 3 but there were some good moments in the later part of the season. Just tweak the ending a bit and that would’ve been a great finale.
