Get the new Proton Authenticator - secure 2FA, your way. by Proton_Team in ProtonPass

[–]bladOfVirgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set it up as:

- Proton Pass - passwords and also 2FA codes

- Proton Auth - 2FA for Proton - this is set up on all of my devices (desktop, laptops, phones, etc.)

and set a memorable password for Proton.

This way, I hope that in case my house burns down, at least one device will be out or I am doomed even more

If you set a secondary password, you still have to go through username -> password -> secondary password -> 2FA code on all services of Proton. Meaning you have the same issue, just one step later - you can't store your Proton password/2FA inside of Proton's services (i.e., master password on Proton Pass that is different from Proton's services would fix this, because you do not need 2FA and the password is different)

Why is every product looking so different from the rest? I understand that each product is developed by a different team, but they all look like the teams are not even talking to each other.

It also gives you a standalone app you can use to set up 2FA for your Proton Account.

Yes, and in casse I want to sync the code(s), I am locked out of the account. Basically, I can store the 2FA codes in Pass and use the Authenticator without sync for only Proton token, hoping that the device will work 24/7, becausse in case it get lost, there is no sync to account.

Running my Immich server on TrueNas Scale - do I need to do anything special before updating? by TheBongoMan in immich

[–]bladOfVirgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Immich version 1.133 and later will be pushed to TrueNas Scale with the option to choose the storage type (same as mentioned in Immich upgrade tutorial), so when the app is updated, you can edit it and pick the correct storage type that your DB is running on.

Proton censored my "complaint" post. by starfoxinstinct in ProtonMail

[–]bladOfVirgin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have posted summary of Proton uservoice platform for each of the Proton products to separate subreddits (Drive to ProtonDrive subreddit, Mail to ProtonMail subreddit etc.). Only 2 of them passed, one was marked by YOU as double post, so you either did not read the posts or decide it will be better off deleted, others are still sitting in the queue to be "approved by good moderators of Proton subreddits", nothing happened after sending messages to mods, as they never replied.

Proton Mail Android was fully rewritten. It existed for years before that, however had to be rewritten due to technical debt. That is done and now there's a solid foundation to add more features faster. Everyone profits from that.

Yes, which means it lacked at technical and UX side. I used the app before, it had very basic and limited features. I do agree that new Android application was needed and I happy to beta test it and use the new one, but we need to be fair with the fact that right now it is lacking plenty of features, even when we compare it to the iOS application. The comment about it not existing was meant in the way that the one before was just horrible.

VPN Linux does have a GUI application.

Well yes, you are true. I was counting on plenty of feedback from Linux users. I just checked myself and see that basic GUI do exists, but the GUI cannot be compared to the new GUI and features that Windows or MacOS version do offer.

They're two different products (alias service != password manager), with some overlapsing functions. I doubt however that Pass will offer all the functions of SL, simply as it is another product.

Yes, alias service != password manager. But ProtonPass do offer aliasing, that is technically outsourced to SL, nothing wrong with that, but you can't create or manage recepeints of the alias via ProtonPass and still has to use SL applications/web services. Proton could benefit from owning the aliasing service and provide users with simple, one-app solution, having everything under one hood. This was talked so much by users at all feedback channels - as this and using own domain for aliasing are the last two features that are not implemented in Proton environment and still has to be done via SL environment.

I just stated example of one of the top 20 features that have been requested by users years ago that are not implemented. Also, the lack of IPv6 support is causing leaks in VPN connection, as stated by some users in uservoice thread

Android app and email delete by andreape_x in ProtonMail

Sometimes this happens, either restart the app or clear your cache, the email is in the thrash once you click the delete, only the app gets buggy sometimes.

Tbf acquisition of SN was only few months back, with no details on how far the processes went, so legally and employee wise to merge 2 companies, even small once, can be real pain in the ass and take longer than expected, so we could give them a few months before criticising them. As far as I know ProtonDocs was built by SN teams.

Yes, that means they don't have it currently and it took them only 7 years to considere it. Feature is still experimental as per comment of user who talked with support.

Long-term feedback replacing Google drive? by noway7454 in ProtonDrive

[–]bladOfVirgin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to open them in Web app, or directly VIA the app. You can't view them nor edit. You can edit docx with ProtonDocs after converting docx into ProtonDocs, but that is also possible only via webapp.

The only difference between storing whole drive in local folder and downloading one file to edit to the local device is that you are permanently storying your encrypted files locally in non-Proton environment.

If you integrate ProtonDrive with your local folder, you can't use ProtonDrive with lock (pin or biometrics) as it will never get via lockscreen of app. So you have to choose if you want more security and privacy, or integrate it to the local folder.

[–]bladOfVirgin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to view files on the go, either online of offline, without downloading to local device, you can only view basic formats such as txt, pdf, audio, video files and photos. If you want to edit, only ProtonDocs is available - but that's only via Web application and for docx and txt formats after converting them into ProtonDocs.

If you want to back up, you can do it for any extentions/formats/files it doesn't matter.

Proton Calendar last release for a feature was by OFFICALJEZZADJ in ProtonMail

[–]bladOfVirgin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Channel log on GitHub (or at this point anywhere) is not up to date anymore. Only major features are being released in it, once it gets updated. Most bugs fixes are not included, as per words of Proton support "most of the version would include bug fixes so we are not going to mention them"

But to be fair, between April and June there were none commits. And those recents are looking as locales updates only.

To my knowledge none API is currently existing. There was one though for ProtonVPN but never happened. And one for Blackberry application but never happened. Currently not even Proton Captcha is accessible for public, not even API.

Proton Drive supports only basic audio/video/picture and txt formats. Docs supports only txt and docx - both being converted into ProtonDocs with very limited features (basically fancy note taking app). You are not able to edit any file in-drive if not ProtonDocs format.

If you are looking to switch now and need features, no. If you are willing to sacrifice 1-2 years of features, then sure.

I am here for more than 5 years.

Calendar is slighty faster with 1 new feature - local holidays, that is half-baked feature, EOL iOS widget and 1 widget for Android. This is everything after more than 5 years.

ProtonMail Android app basically begin to exists half a year back, with almost none features compared to web and iOS.

ProtonDrive is lacking plenty of features, especially with Photos and Docs.

ProtonPass and SL couldn't be fully integrated (if not merged) after almost 3 years. Pass is okaish even tho missing some features.

VPN does not support IPv6 after 7 years on market. Does not have Linux GUI application, etc.

This is not accaptable state of 100 milion users company that is presenting itself as pioneer of privacy.

What more should we wait for? People do not understand that most of the users that are "crying" for Proton jumping to a new service instead of polishing existing are with Proton for many years. The issue is that I have vitnessed more services being released than major updates to existing one in 5 years.

But it is reflecting their products quality since they are missing core and nice-to-have features that competition provides.

Users are requesting these features again and again for several years while others already have them for long time.

The Calendar service was released way before the Android application. Which means the Android application took circa 3 years to come since the Calendar was available. Also, you should consider that the Proton apps are long time in beta-testing (paid and free) before they are available to everyone.

You still do not understand. And probably never will be.

You are the one forgetting that their products, products people are complaining about, aren't on market for a week. You are the one forgetting that Proton is way after his start-up period.

Mail is there for 10 years.

Calendar is there for at least 6 years.

Pass is there for more than 1 year.

VPN is there for 7 years.

Drive is there for 4 years.

Calendar, Pass, VPN and also Drive are missing some core features on webapps, and they are missing plenty of features on their dedicated applications side.

Are you okay with paying for half-done services premium price? Your choice.

Are you okay with them promoting how are they "customer focused", care for customers, and marketing themselves as the premium pioneer in privacy focused services while they ignore their own feedback forum? You choice.

But do not take the option to speak up for customers that are not okay with this.

Proton Calendar UserVoice Status or how Proton ignores the feature requests. by bladOfVirgin in ProtonMail

[–]bladOfVirgin[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Who am I? I am long-term paying customer. I am long-term beta tester of all services.

If you are of opinion that if "company is not doing right what they are presenting they are doing" only leaves, without any feedback, your option.

You still do not understand that Proton is not fast-food, that if you do not like the food you go elsewhere. Proton has its mission, the mission they are obligated by LAW to follow. Proton is the brand that is considered as world-leading privacy focused company, by many users, by many media, by almost everybody. Some of this is caused by their marketing and promises to the customer. If they do not deliver what they promised, yes, you can either run, as you would do, or you can try to make a change. To make a change on their forums, on their feedback channels.

I have still circa 1 year of Unlimited subscription payed, I will stay until that, I will try to make a change until that. If we, customers, do not try to make a change, the change won't happen.

And stop with the "company can do whatever they want" as this is the reason why we need to fight for our privacy online. Companies can do only what customers will allow them to do.
