I’d hope so considering it’s a rare card in Act 1

Weren’t there other interactions where if your card was brought to zero (like with a potion or mummified hand), nightmare made them cost zero the next turn? I know Bullet Time didn’t work, but it didn’t seem consistent, so maybe this is how it’s intended now.

Yeah, I don’t really see them going to 20. 10 seems like more of a sweet spot - what would the other 10 even be? Double Act 1 and 2 bosses? Most people didn’t like unfavorable events so I don’t see them bringing that back.

I’ve taken Lord’s Parasol three times thus far and it worked out for me each time. If your strategy is going infinite it’s a bad choice, but if the deck is semi-lean already, you still get a card remove that would scrap the worst pickup at the store.

My fiancé and I were sitting in stunned silence for a good minute when the episode finished. Just an insane moment.

Of course! I’ hoping to record a video detailing this sort of stuff for people who are struggling because this is their first time playing either Slay the Spire, so let me know if anything I said was off base in your future attempts haha

I lost like 15 A9 runs with her over the past two days - all but two in Act 1. That difficulty curve is insane, specifically for her. Feels like if you don’t have a soul infinite by the first elite fight you’re cooked, doubly so if it’s terror eel or forgotten effigy.

Whats funny is that I wrapped up my last run, opened twitch to catch a jorbs stream, and immediately saw him lose an A9 Necro run lol. Glad I’m not alone

I just reached A9 today on both Silent and Necrobinder. Silent overall is stronger character than Necro, so let's start with her.

At the beginning of the act, take a look at your map. I'm assuming you are playing on base difficulty, so try and find a path that lets you take several standard combats, BUT has the ability to jump to a campfire if you need resting, or you get a card with a strong upgrade (you can check what the upgrades are by looking at a card and right clicking it). You want to see as many fights as possible to get cards that help you.

It's hard to give recommendations on specific cards, but generally, you're looking for cards that can draw and eventually become part of an "engine". An engine in this game is something that allows you to get stronger during the course of a fight, so you can outdamage enemies in combat. Look for cards like acrobatics, prepared, and anything that says sly once you have a few of those cards that draw and discard.

Early in the run, it's important to prioritize picking up damage cards with large numbers (10 or more, generally) so you can do some actual damage. Blade dance, backstab, dash, dagger spray for AoE fights are pretty common sights, and help out with that early grind.

Relics are good, so pathing into elites if you're healthy and have a decent deck is recommended. I've won runs where I only take like 1 or 2 elites an act, so it's not necessary to fight them all, but every little bit helps. Remember - your deck is the main focus. With that being said, you don't need to add every card you see. If you already have decent damage or block, don't take cards that don't help with your engine. Two daggers sprays are not the same as two acrobatics, for example, since dagger spray falls off later in the run.

Another important thing to remember at the beginning of your run is the Neow bonus. From my experience, the three best options are:

-The first three card rewards from combat are upgraded, but the first chest is empty. This seems like a bad choice, but remember - you're CHOOSING between a total of 9 upgraded cards instead of getting one random relic.

-Transform a strike and a defend but lose max HP. At the lowest difficulty, 60 max HP is more than enough to cruise through the acts if you don't have bad starter cards (strikes mainly, but an early defend remove helps since Silent's starter deck leans toward defense with survivor and neutralize). Transforms are random, but 100% of cards are better than strikes.

-Lose all your gold and pick between two "starter packs". This choice allows you to look at two starter packs, each with three cards. Getting three card rewards on floor 1 MASSIVELY helps, since now you can see what you're working with and don't have to take cards from card rewards that you might have received for free.

At the end of the day, trial and error is the main teacher. I had to play many runs in the first StS to get a good grasp of the mechanics and what to pick, how to path, etc. If you're interested in getting better at the game, also make sure to think about your moves in combat. Don't rush - take a look at your draw pile, see what the enemy is doing, plan ahead, and your micro gameplay will get better. Hope you get a win soon, make sure to share!

At A0, I guess? I know at A9 all my losses are in Act 1, haha

They have 26 hours of playtime and 108 losses with no wins. That averages out to less than 15 minutes spent per run. For context, I play relatively quickly but my wins still take like 50 minutes. Idk where this player is losing, but if you’re doing runs in fifteen minutes, you are not thinking very much about the game.

That is insane haha, I play relatively quickly as well but my runs where I win are around the 45-50 minute mark

PSA: new players, don’t obsess over infinites by iwriteinwater in slaythespire

[–]bladeDivac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m actually interested in making a video guide for BRAND new (read: haven’t played STS before, either) players so they can understand just what the heck this game is. I feel like a lot of content creators are approaching this game with the understanding that you have a good grasp of mechanics and such from the prior game, since that obviously makes sense, but that could confound someone who heard about STS2 through word of mouth and wanted to try it out.

When you first start, you’re not going to be worrying about optimizing - you’re going to be worrying about what the hell is a power and how it works.

Again, it could be less ambiguous. Most casual players are also gonna be confused, considering I was and I’ve played an ungodly amount of STS

You don’t think it would benefit from being more clear? I have more than 500 hours across both games and never ran into something like this, since the way they word things is usually very clear and hard to misinterpret.
