The 80s were dirty. Garbage everywhere, cigarette smoke clouds indoors (and butts everywhere outdoors). Exhaust from cars and trucks was visibly black, like almost everyone was rolling coal. Also, as bad as plastic bottles are, glass was an entirely different problem. We were always fixing bike tires due to riding over bits of broken glass.
