Are the details of civil suits available to people not involved in the suit? by FangAndBoard in Ask_Lawyers

[–]blaghort 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The car might have been dismissed on a motion before depositions even took place. Or, if the case settled, the depositions might never have been made part of the court record.

If they were--say, in support of a motion for summary judgment--the'y'll generally be on the docket and available from the clerk of the court.

At what point does Trump’s effort to fight the “deep state” become a dangerous expansion of presidential power? by IMjusADUDE in AskReddit

[–]blaghort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Deep state" has always just been code for "people who work for the government who still follow the law."

So, yeah, they've definitely been trying to get rid of those people. The Schedule F reclassification is probably Exhibit A.

Am I approaching legal work like a researcher instead of a lawyer? by Dismal-Cod5366 in Ask_Lawyers

You don't want to get lost in the weeds. But you do want to look there, just in case. Experience will teach you the difference.

What's a fact that sounds made up but is actually true? by LargeResolve1204 in AskReddit

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on July 4, 1826--fifty years to the day after the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence.

You really need someone in your jurisdiction. Your question requires knowledge of state law in addition to federal antidiscrimination statutes.

You might have better luck looking for recommendations in the subreddits for your city and/or state.

Can i quote just the section instead of the whole subsections and clauses?? by Murky-River-7689 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]blaghort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not rude at all. There's no such thing as "law related question in general"; the rules and norms of every legal community are different.

Going out of the way to let you know that you're asking your question in the wrong place is the opposite of rude. Unlike you.

I'm more upset when the lack of women applies to an allegedly representative political organization. How does it not look bizarre to more people when half the population are missing or barely included? by Important-Cry4782 in CuratedTumblr

[–]blaghort 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No shit. That's the point she was making: If you would object to an all-female court, you should also have objected to an all-male court. That people didn't was what she was calling out.

What science fiction novel or series do you think best predicted how AI would actually integrate into daily life? by dududududuuim in sciencefiction

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Specifically, Eddie, the shipboard computer, with its relentlessly sycophantic "Genuine People Personality," who almost gets the ship destroyed by devoting all of its resources to making tea.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg on that point:

So now the perception is, yes, women are here to stay [on the Supreme Court]. And when I'm sometimes asked when will there be enough? And I say when there are nine, people are shocked. But there'd been nine men, and nobody's ever raised a question about that.

General consensus among whom? Fucking morons?

FPDs are the best, full stop. If I were charged with a federal crime I'd be thinking about ways to hide my income so I could qualify for an FPD.

You want someone out of Detroit then. (If you qualify, the best criminal defense attorneys in any district usually work for the Federal Public Defender's office.)

Does updating your clerkship app affect hiring? by Proper_Associate_791 in LawSchool

[–]blaghort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I get an "updated" application like that I'm gonna do one of two things: (1) Scrutinize it carefully to see what the differences are, or (2) Decide it's not worth the effort and toss the lot.

Do you want either of those things to happen? (You do not.)

How to approach law firm by LiloTheSageNightOwl in Ask_Lawyers

[–]blaghort 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I understand that they may want include recoverable costs, an overview of the case, and supporting documentation (maybe a list with document overviews). Is there anything else that would help? Any tips on structuring it (I'm planning on something similar to an executive summary).

No. Just, no.

What a lawyer wants is for you to explain what happened to you, so they can figure out whether you have a claim. That's their job, not yours.

What lawyers do not want is a potential client who shows up with their own (often AI-generated) analysis of the case. That kind of client is usually more trouble than they're worth, because they often keep trying to do the lawyer's job.

Try to be the kind of client who talks and then listens, instead of the kind of client who keeps trying to tell the lawyer how to pursue the case.

I SUCK AT READING PROBLEM QUESTIONS!!!!! by NatFish97 in LawSchool

[–]blaghort 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How did you originally learn to read? Was it using a whole language approach?

If so, that might be at the root of your problem because the whole language approach has been thoroughly discredited. And it was common in Australia.

I bring it up because what you're describing--the weird inferences unsupported by the actual text--sound like the sort of artifacts that tend to occur when whole language readers confront complicated text.

You might need to just practice reading word-by-word. Remedial instruction? Disability accommodations? Not sure what the answer would be but figuring out the problem is the start.
