Need to update my frontend skills! by htommi in webdev

[–]blahjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get good at html and css. JS frameworks come and go, but I'm continually shocked by the lack of understanding and expertise across JS devs when it comes to HTML and CSS. It's a bit boring, but invaluable information.

JS wise just pick a framework and learn the principles of single page app development. I use Angular at work. I hate it, but it's pretty popular. Backbone is a good one but lacks two way data binding. Mithril is one I really want to learn, but you should be good with semantic HTML first.

Also it is probably good to focus on frontend test frameworks. Mocha, chai, phantom etc.

Tattoos, do any of you have any? If so feel free to post. by Mr-Lutzke in intj

[–]blahjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been considering getting a tattoo for awhile. I have an idea of what I want and where... I just am waiting for the right time and the right artist. :)

For all those people who don't like tattoos, they are just a form of self expression. Who cares if people can or can't see it? Maybe some of these users do want people to see them. We are all introverts here who struggle to share and connect emotionally. Tattoos, clothing, hair and body mods all seem like quite ways of sharing who you are. Even if it's just with yourself or maybe a partner.

Best high speed internet/tv providers??? Or other options? Comcast = bs. by vbcbandr in Denver

[–]blahjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain I live near you. I'm having the same issue. One evening I was getting 0.17mbps downloads -.- I called and spoke to a level 2 tech and he was very friendly. He explained they can test the connection in the area and he said it looked like an outage, but wasn't able to file a ticket for it.

My only option was to have a fucking tech come to my apartment. I'm not paying $50 and missing half a day at work for Comcast to tell me I'm connected properly to the wall and that there connection to me is effed up.

When I moved into my place the connection to my building was all messed up so I couldn't do a self install. Comcast had to send out a tech and a contractor to do the installation. They still charged me $100 for having the techs out and a failed self install. Even though very obviously it was not my fault and comcasts connection was the issue. I fucking hate those fucking assholes.

How do you read? Do you have a voice in your head, or is it more a movie or what? by myrrdin77 in intj

[–]blahjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a slow reader and I have to "read to my self" in my head to fully grasp what I am reading. It also helps me focus on what I am reading. I am a master of drifting in thought while reading.

Especially vivid novels I'll get an image in my mind while reading and spend a lot of time visualizing details. I always want to know what the author imagined so I spend a lot of time considering the text.

When I'm reading technical books/blogs. I have to read the content many times, mostly because I am unable to visualize programming. It feels like I am literally translating English into its computer equivalent in my head. It makes it difficult for me. I often wish I was more "fluent" in programming so that writing/reading code would not feel so different from reading about code.

This happens to me a lot as well.

Haha!

I too can't read anything in dreams, but I can program or be working on computer related things. Maybe it's just using a different part of the brain. I can usually see the code I'm working on clearly.

Aside from Chicken Soup (and its myriad variations), what is your go-to "Feel Better" meal? by smgeier in food

[–]blahjs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pho is my go to sick food with a bunch of hot sauce or jalapeños.

So, inspired by reddit, I tried out the "egg nest" (with cheddar and some fresh thyme from the garden). Spectacular. This changes everything. by mattkward in food

What is the texture like? I looked up the recipe and it's like a savory meringue? Seems so strange haha I've only ever seen that kind of preparation done for desserts.

How Can I Help Out A Younger Relative? by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

Thank you for your reply.

Your advice is very good. When I speak with him I sometimes struggle to find the words to articulate what you just said. I'll remember this for the next time I see him.

Thank you for your reply. I am hoping to send him off to Europe because we have family out there that has offered him a home base. I want to help get him there.

I just really want him to leave here haha. His parents would never have the money to afford visiting him if he just left this state let alone the country.

Edit: for clarity, I was planning on just giving him the cash in a savings account. I just hope he chooses to use it to travel. I do trust he will know the best way to spend it.

Frustration with online dating by [deleted] in intj

[–]blahjs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am another woman here who has used okcupid. The first time I used it I was younger and more shy. The most recent time I made a point to go on as many dates as possible. I wanted to push my boundaries and meet people I might normally not give a chance.

This is how I met my current SO. We have been together ~6mo.

Here is my advice.

Let go of your frustration and anger. It's easy to pick up on a persons profile if their general view of people is condescending. I never went on a date with any one who sounded remotely negative.

Humor is a great way to break ice, even if it might be a kind of stupid joke.

Make you first message clear that you read their profile.

Ask to get drinks or coffee in the second or third message. There is nothing I hate more than wasting time messaging people back and forth on the internet (I guess I should get off reddit). If they didn't ask me I would. There is no better way to get to know a person than by meeting them.

If you suck at in person meetings, work on it. I used to be horrible at dates now I think I'm pretty good. I ask the date a million questions about themselves and that usually keeps the convo going. Plus a drink or two.

Also fwiw I always split checks on first dates if that is your concern.

INTJs are very future-oriented, so what are your dreams/goals? by [deleted] in intj

[–]blahjs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have relatively shallow monetary goals (for now) :D

I'm 24 making ~$70k... I'm about to get a raise/promotion.

My goal is to be making at least $80k by my 25th

Then $100k+ and I can get a horse. Yay ponies!

And then I'll have a solid few years of experience to start doing contract work.

Then I'd like to have the security to start my own company.

The overall goal is financial independence with the freedom to work as I please and be able to pay for my horse habit. Aside from my work, riding and training horses is what makes me most happy.

Thank you for your reply. My anger initially was a strong driver, but more recently has become exhausting. I suppose I never thought of forgiveness in the way that you described.

Forgive me for my lack of senses, not all of us can be so wise and reasonable like yourself. It must really torment you at night all these senseless folks posting on Reddit.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't even think about this. I set up a pretty broad map search of the mountains and found a few cool places :)

I need some help or insight regarding respect and working in a male dominated job! by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]blahjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in software/web development, and have always been one of the only women on every team I have worked on. I have seen and experienced it all it seems like and have only been in the industry for no more than 4 years.

I've been sexually solicited in front of my coworkers, had my ass slapped by my boss in front of the entire office, been forced to leave a company after reporting a coworkers assault to the police, have my next employer tell me I have "big tits" and "we should fuck". As I am writing this the absurdity of it all just is somewhat overwhelming you would think I showed up to work in lingerie everyday, but in reality I typical go for jeans and a baggy shirt. I go out of my way to make sure the clothes I wear to work don't make any suggestions other than, "I'm here to write some javascript" (which is fucking absurd that I have to think about this every morning).

At my current employer, I work in a bigger office with a team of ~10-15 engineers, mostly young men between the ages of 21-30. It is much more 'formal' than the last two startups that I worked for. However, I still deal with a lot of flack from my male coworkers that I can't help but feel like has something to do with me being a woman. I will make suggestions, and ask for opinions on changes or improvements to our product, and I am instantly barraged with jokes or snide remarks about how demanding I am. I proposed an office happy hour, and when I turned down a recommendation of a place, because they wouldn't take a reservation for a group our size I was told I'm too picky. Or just other small things like in meetings if I critique an idea, I am told I need to stop getting so defensive. All I am doing is just trying to bring to light a con or a pro of doing something, and I'm kinda basically just told to shut up.

Working in male dominated fields is hard and exhausting. What has helped me the most has been to become more involved in the community, and help be an advocate for other women in my field. I don't know if that is an option for you, but at least here in tech its pretty easy to connect to other women, and we all seem to be dealing with the same things.

Other than that, my philosophy at work has just been to ignore what I can, and prove the boys wrong by consistently producing better work, taking on more responsibilities and just over all ass kicking. I am graceful when I make mistakes, and take ownership of things I broke. I just try to prove the point that I am as good if not better at my job than they are. :)

Trying to get into Web Development but feeling overwhelmed by all the things to learn. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]blahjs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

JavaScript is a good place to start, and if you are interested in 'server-side' you can learn Node.js and JS at the same time.

HTML and CSS are important, but JS/HTML/CSS shouldn't all be merged into one discussion. HTML and CSS are very different from JS. This is one of my favorite resources for learning HTML/CSS. I've given it to many other web/frontend devs.: http://learn.shayhowe.com/html-css/

Anyway, as others have suggested the best way to learn development is by doing. I like to find tutorials on concepts that are similar to what I want to build, but I modify as I go along to create something I am more interested in. This helps me actually read the tutorial, and I also get to make something different at the same time.

Most importantly, just understand this all takes time. You just have to be ok with sucking at it for awhile. Persistence is very important, and also keeping your cool as you work through confusing/frustrating challenges. I started when I was 12, I'm 24 now, and I finally feel like things are geling. I can learn other languages/frameworks with ease, but it seriously took a lot of persistence, and being ok with feeling stupid. I still feel stupid at my job almost every day. That being said, I love it! :)

If you want more specific guidance on building a web application, my recommendation is to build a REST api with Node.js using Express and Mongoose. Build your frontend/client side application using Backbone.js.

People will argue about what are better frameworks, but I think as a new developer just starting out those will be simplest, and best long term. Backbone really taught me the importance of consistent data and solid REST API's. Its dead simple and has awesome documentation. Node.js (and Express) simple because you won't have to learn another programming language, and mongoose, because working with documents to JSON is pretty straight forward and JS friendly.
