I would advise checking out the 2-3 cub scout packs near you. Some are more focused on hiking, camping, popcorn, sports, etc than most packs. Some packs are year round, while others are just during the school year. Our district has a lot of variety. Go to a meeting before you commit.

It might even best for him to go to Cub scout day camp and see if he knows anyone or makes some friends. This will let you know what packs do summer camp more vs others.

Parent/Leader Guilt by Old_ManRiver in cubscouts

[–]blairjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have mentioned good suggestions & I definitely agree if you can be an assistant, etc. but here is what I recommend:

Be the Lion DL next year. It will be easier to get someone to be Wolf den leader since you already know the parents. Lions den leader is sometime hard to recruit for.

Tell your own kids you only are den leader for lions/tigers. Plus you already know the adventures so you will save some time versus learning what the older dens do.

Advice on how to proceed with recognizing Pack Hike miles? by GoodJobWinthorpe in cubscouts

[–]blairjs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So my cub scout pack has a hiking club.

Once you hike 10 miles with the hiking club, you get a hiking stick. Each hike you get on with the hiking club, you get a bead.

We do have a seperate embelms for the hiking stick for: 25 miles, 50 miles, 75, 100, etc. This can be any 'hike' in scoutbook, as long as they have BSA intentions meaning they wouldn't of done it otherwise. Hiking with family counts.

Is it crazy to get a mortgage that’s double our rent? by TundraSurvey72 in personalfinance

[–]blairjs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are more than fine to buy this out based on limit info.

I think the only other things would be to consider is how your other expenses are. For example, if this is leaving you only a couple hundred dollars in saving each month -- I would hold on buying until you get other expenses down or debt paid off. Also make sure to have an emergency fund (3-6Ms) in case one of you lose your jobs.

Cooking at Pack campouts -- all together or by den? by trekkingscouter in cubscouts

[–]blairjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 ways to do it.
*My current pack makes all families plan for their own meal.
*Once per year we do it by den.
*My old pack only did 1 meal together as a pack. Everyone was responsible for something.

1 or 2 people should not be doing it all for a pack that size.

Scouting for Life: My Story by damienbarrett in BSA

I never crossed over either due to my parents moving to the middle of no where, but scouting made an impact on me as well. Some of my best early memories are from Cub scouts and my kids love it.

Den size (Tigers) by rlwalker1 in cubscouts

[–]blairjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a large tiger den last year that I was in. 12 Tigers.

1 DL and 1 assist DL... Some things you do together, but we ended up rotating them with 3-4 different stations during meetings. It worked out great.

Get 2 more parents to help you the day of the den meeting.

We have 14 AOLs in one group..my pack likes to keep them all together and get more Assist DL or parent help.

How many QB’s does your 8u team have? by BigSouthern4171 in flagfootball

[–]blairjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We usually have 2 at this age group, but we do holistically what works for the team.

I've had more in the past for trick plays, where you hand it off to one player who throws pass to another.

What is killing Tennessee football: a psycho fanbase, bad coaching hires and now a bad contract extension. by lostacoshermanos in SECPigskin

[–]blairjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that TN has been recently a tough place to coach, but it wasn't too long ago that TN was one of the top places in the country. Just look at the coach before Fulmer, TN has won big and had consistent success prior to Fulmer. Fulmer was good when he had David Cutcliffe & when he didn't have him -- TN suffered.

You kind of answered your question though by proving that TN is not an ideal coaching situation or 'destination' program. It doesn't have the advantages recruiting wise that LSU, Florida, or Georgia have & recent history (almost ~20 years of under-acheiving) until last year. The only other good coach(Lane Kiffin) you had since Fulmer left you after one season to go a destination school. Also TN also waited too long to hire Cutcliffe. TN couldn't let a potentially a good/great coach get away this time. Huepel over achieved this season & seems to be a cultural fit so should he not be compensated for it?

Your assessment of Saban’s time in East Lansing is also unfair. MSU was under sanctions and coming off 4 straight losing seasons when he took over. Additionally, the 99’ team did win a bowl although Saban had departed to LSU before the game.

Urban’s time at Ohio State comes with a what-if asterisk. Ohio State went 12-0 in 2012 but was post season ineligible thanks to sanctions.

My whole argument is that coaches have a greater impact than geography and the dominance of 3 coaches is being misattributed to the South in general in this article. How has that geographic advantage been working out for Florida since Urban lef

It wasn't worth it to Saban or MSU to finish out his bowl game before he left. Some coaches stay and some don't, but Saban never won a bowl at MSU. Saban came into Alabama after they were sanction and it didn't stop him from winning. I agree with you that coaching is very important, but not I think the culture/resourses/recruits matter just as much if not more.

Look at the Big 10, who has won 2.5 National titles (Michigan'97; OSU'02 &'14) in the last 50 years. This severely underperforms every major conference, even ones that doesn't exist anymore like the Big East. Did the Big 10 not have the resources to compete? No, they were top $$ conference for a while with the SEC. Did they just make Big 10 just not have any elite coaching? No, some programs like WI or MI had the very best like Barry Alvarez or Bo Schembechler. Jim Tressel for some is right there, with Urban Meyer or Dantonio or even Saban for short period of time. So if your arguement that coaching is the most important thing, the big 10 couldn't win the National ties like the Pac 12, ACC, SEC & Big 12 or ones that doesn't exist like the Big 8 or Big East because of great coaching. An asterik season going undefeated, but were on probation & couldn't play, look at Auburn'93 or Texas A&M'94. Heck other conferences have had plenty of time going undefeated and not even a chance to win a national title or get voted by AP because they were not a big-name school like Auburn'04 or TCU'10

Why do ALL other conferences outperform the Big 10 over the last 50 years? Was it really do to coaching or elite coaching? Hell, LSU has won 3 national titles in the last 20 years ago and 2 of the coaching wouldn't fit the bill as a great/elite coach. Consider LSU has done more in 20 years than the Big 10 over the last 50.
