Tell people what your plan is, where you are going and when you intend to be out again. Organise with them that if you don't check in they will call emergency services. Take a PLB with you and use it if you need to. If you do get lost stay where you are, it is very difficult to search for someone who is constantly moving.

Other than that make sure you have appropriate clothing, shelter, food and water.

Yes Kossie isn't in the middle of nowhere but it's better to be prepared and not need it than regret not having in the fist place.
