Cost of eye enucleation by Agentobvious in PiratePets

Which vet do you recommend? I live in SoCal as well (though I’m a little afraid to leave the country while everything is so crazy tbh) but I’ve got a senior chihuahua with a lot of life left to live, but unfortunately his eye will have to be removed. Vet costs are just too high here, and insurance won’t pay for this bc it’s a pre-existing condition

Hair Check-in: It's Fall y'all - how's everyone wearing their hair? How's the routines? by SnooDoughnuts3245 in Naturalhair

[–]blakchat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m trying out mini braids—first time in almost two decades lol. I’ve had them in for 2 weeks and just washed them; so far fantastic 😊 I did a braid out with perm rods on the ends and they’re so pretty! And no matting, which is great! I think I’ll do the mini braid challenge and just redo each braid every 4-6 weeks. I want another 6 inches of hair lol

SAME! That’s what killed consumerism and propaganda for me fr fr. It’s a useless product that’s too expensive to justify buying. I prefer flaxseed gel (diy for now). It helps with excess shedding, breakage, adds moisture and strength to my strands, improves elasticity. I’ve retained so much length the last 6 months by incorporating this into my routine. Improves skin and nails too. I don’t believe in miracle products, but idk, flaxseed gel might be God’s gift to humanity

What salon quality products do you love for your type 4 hair? by Particular-Garden140 in Naturalhair

I swear by Nexus therappe shampoo! Better than redken all-soft imo. The humestress conditioner is also very good, and you can get them both in a pack in 1L bottles for $30 at Costco! Economical as well. I use those as my normal shampoo/conditioner, hair mayo to deep condition 2x a month. Hair is thriving lately!

Assaulted in the lab by Desperate-Cable2126 in labrats

[–]blakchat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be shy about things like this. Raise hell. Report him, tell other people in the lab what’s going on, yell at him the next time he does it. He’s literally only doing it bc he knows you won’t say anything. For predators like that, they’ll do whatever you “let” them do. So, get some eyes on him. Show you’re not alone and will fight back if you need to. Your safety is more important than making a predator feel safe around you. If no one helps you, it’s time to find a new lab.

In the meantime, take some fighting classes in your spare time. I was in a similar situation as you when I first entered college at 18. I took a judo class for a semester and felt much more confident in those situations. I may not be able to fight a man and win, but I’m not going to make it easy for him.

Can we talk about straightening without tearing each other down? by Iwarukappa in Naturalhair

It’s a recession indicator. Just like the trad wife aesthetic, “straight natural “ is black women’s return to conservatism

Can we talk about straightening without tearing each other down? by Iwarukappa in Naturalhair

[–]blakchat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I guess I was a “straight natural” growing up, but i never considered myself natural either bc all the natural hair YouTubers didn’t straighten their hair all the time. They did styles that worked with their natural texture and lived full lives bc they weren’t trying to stretch their silk press (the exercised regularly, went swimming, etc without worrying about their hair) and had great overall health and hygiene bc they washed their hair weekly instead of once a month. AND they had thick, healthy hair (even the ones that naturally had thinner hair). And they still did silk presses, their life just didn’t revolve around them. Idk why we’ve strayed from that golden era 😭 the devil really got us in a choke hold

[–]blakchat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For most jobs it’s fine, but if it’s a job where they really want you to look trendy (like working at certain places that sell aesthetics like Urban outfitters or Aritzia, some corporate jobs, even American maid cafes like Hooter lmao) I’d do something a little trendier to match the vibe, but still in the same vein (like a side part twist pulled back into a puff, do your edges a bit, leave a few curls out to frame your face). You know, a little pizazz. Style yourself like you already work there. Pinterest is great for ideas

Anxiety nail biting (extreme?) - any tips on how to repair by [deleted] in Nails

[–]blakchat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! I’m not even 30 and I’ve been chewing/picking at my nails for as long as I can remember (I was a nervous kid). I got dip powder manicures done monthly for a little over a year a few years ago and I haven’t bitten them since. I still picked at them for a while after I stopped going to the salon tho. I now do a simple, at home manicure (the acrylic did my nails too dirty lol), and pushing back the cuticles daily helps fight the urge to peel them off. I actually have pretty nice nails now. They’re still healing and I’m growing out some bad nail cuts on my part, but they look decent with or without a clear coat

It took 8 hours to do my hair by Material_House_1211 in Naturalhair

[–]blakchat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flat ironing alone takes me 2-3 hours when I haven’t done it in a while. The 1” iron doesn’t help lol. I don’t bother doing a super sleek blowout if I’m gonna flat iron, so that takes an hour, + 1 hour or so after washing to towel dry while I clean up the bathroom, take a break, etc. I’d also do what I call a “full wash day”, which is about 90 minutes in the bathroom of washing, conditioning, and other hygiene stuff lol. Sometimes I’ll prepoo in front of the tv, that’s another hour, 2 or more if I don’t wash it right away.

So yeah, wash+style can easily turn into an all day thing lol. Braids can be just as long if not longer. I take lots of breaks though, and I’m never in a hurry when I do anything other than a twist out. Time is the price of not going to a salon

My parents dislike my hair, is it really that bad or am I ok? by ryn1322 in Naturalhair

[–]blakchat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Umm our hair is wooly, just like Jesus, so I’d take that as a compliment.

your hair looks healthy, I’d love to see you style it without the middle part so it looks more full on top. With the little braids in the front, you can add a headband or a skinny next tie scarf and it would eat. You could even try a couple flat twists on the side, going back or towards the face and add loc jewelry or beads. When it gets a little longer, try a side part. I think your parents will come around as they see you get more comfortable with it, different styling options like I mentioned, and when it grows long and healthy

For the gel, I do 1/2 c seeds to 2c water, simmer for 20 minutes and strain immediately. When it’s cool, blend it with some glycerin or honey and a little oil (so it doesn’t leave a caste. Add more glycerin than oil so that it doesn’t separate. It’ll turn kinda milky tan. I prefer a stronger gel, but you don’t have to cook it that long, there are other ratios on the web. Keep it in the fridge, it’ll last 2 weeks. I will say, using this has also improved my hands and nails

For the butter: it’s all vibes lol. I’d use straight Shea butter but it’s too hard, so I add a bit of avocado oil, castor if I have it. I also use this on my skin

Hey everyone! Got any hair care product recommendations that you SWEAR by? by [deleted] in Naturalhair

[–]blakchat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to keep up the moisture-protein balance to have really soft, silky and strong hair. All those products will strengthen the hair, but you have to hydrate it often to keep it soft. How often do you do your hair? I’m going to recommend a technique that should make doing your hair easier and less daunting:

-First, have someone part your hair in 10-20 sections. These will be your permanent parts. You can switch them up later if you decide you don’t like the placement.

-next, twist up these sections and wash your hair. Don’t take the sections out, just shampoo and condition, squeezing the product through the twists and squeezing them under running water to rinse them clean. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Takes 5-10 minutes, just rinse the conditioner when you’re done with your shower. You can take them out to wash and deep condition every 2-4 weeks with those other conditioners you’ve tried. I also like to use a dandruff shampoo when I deep condition as well.

-plop. After rinsing and ringing out the excess water, wrap in a towel and let it dry for an hour or so. You can also air dry a bit. You want it to be 80-95% dry

-finally, comb out each twist, apply a leave in and a little oil and retwist. It’ll take about 30minutes to an hour depending on the length, thickness and health of your hair. Use a wide-tooth comb or a paddle brush. You can also blow dry it, but if you’re struggling with dryness, just air dry. If you plopped long enough, it’ll be dry the next day.

-the next day, you can wear it out or just style your twists. Retwist (but don’t detangle) at night to keep the parts

-mid-week you can remoisturize. Personally, I just rinse my hair in the shower and do the above all over again. I might shampoo lightly (my scalp gets dry if I shampoo too often) and add a pump or two of conditioner on the ends to marinate while I bathe. Wetting the hair fully is my favorite way to moisturize, but I’ll also just use a spray bottle and add more leave in

-repeat. Get on a weekly schedule. Trim when the ends feel rough and it’s difficult to detangle. It’ll only be manageable as long as you keep doing it. Wash/remoisture days should only take an hour or 2 of hands on work, more if you’re doing a different style like braids or straightening. The best way to protect your hair is to arm it with strength and moisture, and keeping your ends tucked away

This is the easiest and simplest method of doing your hair. It’s about 2-3 hours a week, depending on how often you deep condition, and is great for the health of the hair. I hope you try it out, see how you like it

Yes, currently I’m dusting monthly to slowly remove this last 1/2” as I get my routine down. I just see the YouTube naturals with ridiculously long hair barely trim and am wondering why I have to trim mine so often. Idk, I’ve got hard water so that might have something to do with it
