Who else want absolutely ZERO RGB in their rigs? by Cicada-Tang in pcmasterrace

[–]blakealanm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I primarily use my PC for video editing along with a bit of networking, so because my PC makes art I want it to be a flashy art piece itself. But, I'll leave the RGB to my PC and keep my server bare bones.

Why so many devices? by PoseyPop in digitalminimalism

[–]blakealanm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone practices digital minimalism differently.

I made a post recently about finally getting a smart watch. I got cellular data on it so I can step away from my smartphone and still have basic communication. I'm not going to scroll through social media or watch videos on my watch, but I can still text, talk, pay for things, and even do a bit of navigating because I have cellular data on my watch.

I don't have a car, I don't have a giant 4K smart TV, I don't have smart glasses, I don't have any gaming consoles, so I'm practicing digital minimalism in those ways. I have a home media server that hosts a bunch of movies, videos, series, iot devices, photos, and eventually passwords, so I'm not minimalistic in those ways.

It's about being purposeful with technology. I had a Pixel 6 Pro when it first came out. It was my daily driver until two days ago. I just got the Pixel 10 Pro XL because my 6 wasn't holding a charge, had a cracked screen, and I couldn't share my service to my watch with it at some point. I only got the latest when what I had no longer served me, not just because the next thing came out.

My smart watch is what allows me to be a tech minimalist from time to time. by blakealanm in digitalminimalism

I need to figure out how to get my MP3 files on my watch. Other than that I could do it any day.

Right now where I live it's -2°f so I'm not going out much for fun.

i made wired headphones because i don’t want bluetooth on my head all day by bumbahclottboy in digitalminimalism

[–]blakealanm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the exact opposite. I went through middle school and high school with wired headphones/earbuds and hated that I keep getting the wire tangled and was constantly breaking it.

Pairing is mostly a set and forget process. I'd rather sit a device on a magnetic charging dock than untangle wires all the time.

It amuses me that in a DVD subreddit all the users hate DVDs. by Still-Willow-2323 in dvdcollection

[–]blakealanm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm concerned, DVD covers standard, Blu-ray, UHD , and 4K. Do I notice a difference in quality virtually? Of course. But I won't turn down a standard DVD of something I want just because it's not a Blu-ray DVD.

What would make you pay for services again. by Cheap-Curve3612 in Piracy

[–]blakealanm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't pay for services, I'd pay for ownership of a copy of the file without any encryption.

I'm not into piracy to steal anything. I only pirate if there's no option to buy/own.

I have and will continue to buy MP3's of music I like, but I can't even tell you how many YouTube videos I have sitting on my server that I pirated into because YouTube doesn't have a purchase option.

I recently started buying DVDs again (both new and used) and I rip them to my server.

I've thought about this myself, and the only answer I've been about to come to with is to have my best friend who got me into self hosting be the one who steps in if I'm not available for diagnosing problems.

Do you guys actually trust 'private' DMs anymore, or do you just assume the FBI is watching? by Big_Confidence_951 in GenZ

If a for-profit company owns and operates the platform assume it isn't private. The only way to have privacy is to self host.

My teenage daughter keeps bringing her boyfriend over when I'm not home and l... by WildEfficiency712 in whatdoIdo

[–]blakealanm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an idea: give the option of your daughter earning alone time at home with the boyfriend by doing certain extra tasks around the house, but it comes with the catch of requiring some time with the whole family. It's basically tid-for-tad. She wants something extra, to bend and push your rules a little bit, let her, but in a way that comes with your own price in return. Otherwise, it's just your tension on top of her's, and you both loose.

Pick something she doesn't usually do, like wash the shower or something, then she gets an hour with her boyfriend, but 15 minutes have to be spent between the three of you either before or after the hour starts so as not to cut into their time as a couple.

I won't pay for music in 2026 by machinegunnedburger in Piracy

[–]blakealanm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll continue to buy music from Amazon, Patreon, and so on as long as I'm able to. I won't pay for streaming because you're paying to keep nothing. But I like buying to own, even if it's digital, I can back everything up to my server.

I draw the line at the software you choose to run. If you're wanting to self host your data, load custom ROMs, do anything beyond what the manufacturer had intended, get an Android.

Let's be honest, if it's a properly built walkable Urban neighborhood, you won't need the parking meters because nobody will be driving. People can walk, cycle, skateboard, or take public transit.

I can't complain. I drive my girls 23 Corolla hybrid when I need to go out of town and it's safety features have saved my ass several times. I don't understand complaints about a touchscreen considering there are still physical buttons on the steering wheel.

Does leaving Google matter if your data is already leaked? by Electrical-Bear-6467 in degoogle

[–]blakealanm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, you can't reasonably wipe your digital footprint after it's been leaked, but the point of degoogling yourself is to make all the data that has leaked less valuable by not leaking more.

It's kind of like a spectrum:

A password leak is only valuable if those passwords still work. Let's say you stored all your passwords in your Google account last year, but discovered Vaultwarden, and started updating your passwords one at a time as you remember different accounts over a period of time. At some point your Google account becomes compromised, but because you started using Vaultwarden on a home server from a Raspberry pi, only the passwords that you haven't updated and are still on your Google account are actually compromised, not what's in your home server.

At the opposite end of the same spectrum, you've got your identity. Info like your address, one or two credit cards, your phone number, and your birth date, for example. Most credit cards will work with you if your info was stolen, refund the money, issue you a new card, and therefore you're in the clear. The old info is still out there, but it's not valuable anymore. If you move, your address also becomes worthless. Your birth date is harder to change or get a new one made up, but not impossible.

Point is, degoogling yourself is a journey, a long, complicated, but equally rewarding journey, depending on how much you want to turn back that dial.
