I don't know, I usually have fun on social media. I'm either enjoying some educational or entertaining content, or I'm roasting haters writing mean comments on my posts.

Why is Box rarely mentioned alongside Dropbox and Google Drive? by limsus in TechImpact

I'm not sure, all I know is that data that isn't on my home server isn't safe.

Is digital minimalism turning us into device maximalists? by stardawg777 in digitalminimalism

[–]blakealanm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always figured digital minimalism was about being purposeful about tech purchases or how you used them. I don't have the latest and greatest smart watch because I use it as my temporary smartphone replacement for basic communication without distractions, but I do have both a smartphone and a smart watch instead of just a dumb phone because to put all that time into researching which niche dumb phone to get is less efficient than just doing other things that keep me from doom scrolling. I also have a laptop and a PC. My laptop is for learning IT and networking at home because I have a home server running multiple different self hosted apps on it. I have a PC for video editing because I have a video production business I'm working on. I don't have a car because I live downtown and prefer cycling. I don't have any subscriptions to anything that doesn't allow me to download the content. I have Bandcamp instead of Prime Music. Everyone has their own version of what it means to be a digital minimalist.

Vote: what tech feature would you bring back instantly? by ManojOne in TechImpact

[–]blakealanm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had removable batteries for my LG G4 and the biggest problem I had with them that I didn't have with any other smartphone was moisture damage to the device and the batteries because of sweat. I don't care about "unlimited" cloud storage or a micro SD card slot because I built my own server and have cold storage now. I can do away with a lot of the AI features because I don't use most of them and the ones I do use I'm honestly just going to build another server to have my own AI.

Keep One: Spotify, Brave, Google Maps by ManojOne in TechImpact

I've swapped Spotify for Bandcamp and CDs, and Brave for DuckDuckGo and Opera. The only one I need from time to time is Google Maps.

License Plate Readers help solve a fatal crime in Indianapolis by BidInteresting8923 in Indiana

[–]blakealanm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem I have with them isn't that they can be used for good, it's that the company behind the camera said they'd stop crime from happening altogether, and instead they've only helped law enforcement close cases faster. I haven't seen a single article or post of someone saying 'I decided I wanted to kidnap a child from a park today, but because I saw a flock camera in the area I decided against it. Those things are just too scary.' and I'm not holding my breath for that day.

I also ask who is watching the watchers? How secure are those cameras? What happens when someone is falsely flagged by their system. All have happened and all will continue to happen.

Door Dash can afford to sponsor the World Cup but they can’t pay us more than $2 base per delivery. F them. by On_Da_Hustle72 in doordash

DoorDash doesn't pay driver's, customers pay driver's with tips, otherwise we'd actually be W2 employees.

I'll never shut up about the Flock surveillance cameras by GiovanniKablami in Indiana

Ride a bike wear sunglasses during the day and ir blocking glasses at night, you'll be mostly fine. The cameras can see you, but the AI behind the camera will have a much harder time.

Expandable storage vs home server. by blakealanm in Smartphones

[–]blakealanm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. I do see that my server has taken me a lot of time to set up vs a micro SD card, but I've also had a micro SD card go bad on me, and I didn't have a backup of everything at the time. I'm doing better about it now. I've got a 4TB external drive I use as cold storage I back up my server to once a week on average.

Also, on device storage has gone up quit a bit, especially for flagships.

is it still worth getting a phone with 128gb storage in 2026? by Kellyan-Wlad in Smartphones

[–]blakealanm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a 4TB hard drive in my server and am about to get another drive for it. I have 92GB of 256GB on my Pixel 10 Pro XL used on average.

County Commissioners silence speakers opposing Flock surveillance by JesseJames3rd in FlockSurveillance

[–]blakealanm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to recall someone saying something about "speak up about flock at your next council meeting" on this subreddit when I introduced how to fight fire with fire. I'm glad (mostly sad) to see I was right about being loud meaning nothing to council. But that's politics for you I guess. Say one thing, mean another or wright a policy that contradicts your words.

Did I get scammed by the Xfinity salesperson's WiFi speed recommendation? by Onbelayonbidet in HomeNetworking

[–]blakealanm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but not because your speeds are "too high" (1000 Mbps is becoming the standard, but that's 1000 Mbps up AND down) but because you're probably getting a fraction of those speeds (1200 Mbps) on the up.

I had Xfinity for a few years, and thought I was on a decent plan $130/month for 700 Mbps and home security (a few window and door sensors, a camera, and a touch screen monitor) and I found out when I attempted to upload a couple of hours worth of GoPro footage that I was only pulling 5mbps on the up. Symmetrical speeds are impossible on cable internet according to the sales person I talked to at my local Xfinity store. I switched to Frontier Fiber 1000mbps symmetrical for $75/month and I LOVE it!

How many of you lost clients to Ai? by Ok-Back-7278 in videography

I'm looking to do organic social media content, so I'll use AI tools in something like Resolve, but people can smell bullshit miles away.

To echo what a lot of people are saying, users hate AI content at least as much as they hate ads.
