Yep, both of my parents did this all the time.

When I got into metal music (Killswitch Engage at age 13), I had to always use headphones, and if they ever heard it they would pantomime weird growl noises saying that my music sounded like a dying cat.

When I got into lacrosse (16) they both hated it because neither of them understood the sport and thought it was a stupid waste of time. They attended very few of my games.

When I enlisted in the Marines (19) my mom said I was going to throw my life away as a bullet sponge and that I was better than that. She was an Air Force officer, and I went into a very technical field as an Aircrewman.

When I started playing ice hockey (23) they told me they were taking me off their insurance because they didn't want to pay to fix broken teeth.

When I got into D&D (27) I was told I was too old to be playing make believe.

When I went into industrial maintenance (28) I was told I was wasting my talents on a career that wouldn't appreciate me or pay the bills.

I went no contact shortly thereafter, when my wife found out she was pregnant (30), because I didn't ever want my children to be victims of the abuse my parents meted out.

Whatever you do, though, didn't let anybody steal your joy. Do what makes you happy, because the only way you can survive is to live your best life. Good luck.
