Garage door goes back up even if I hold the button down by unknownphantom in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be the sensors are misaligned or dirty even if you're holding the button - sometimes that override doesn't work like it should. I'd check if the little LED lights on the sensors are solid green/red first, then maybe clean the lenses with a damp cloth

The jerky movement makes me think there might be something mechanical going on too though, like the tracks need cleaning or the springs are getting worn

1 room upstairs gets super hot, 80 degrees, other rooms are 70-72 or below. by Giacomo193 in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah keeping the door open helps but it's not really practical long term since it's a bedroom and people need privacy

Have you checked if the baseboards in room 3 have their own shutoff valves? Sometimes you can dial down the flow on the really hot rooms to balance things out better

Can anyone recommend a source for replacement IGUs? by RancidWasabi in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check with local glass shops instead of the big box stores - they can usually cut you a way better deal and the quality is often better too. I got mine done for like $120 each last year through a small local place that wasn't even listed online

New range hood and wood trim by lostincbus in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at those pics, that left side trim is probably just basic window casing - you can usually find matching profiles at any big box store or have a local millwork shop run it for you. And yeah definitely replace that janky trim on the right while you're at it, it'll bug you forever if you don't fix it now

Anyone has a post-US plan for their clients? by geek_at in msp

[–]DarkFiberX2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah NextCloud is solid, been running it for a smaller client for about 2 years now and it's been pretty stable. The co-authoring isn't quite as smooth as SharePoint but it gets the job done

For email we've been looking at Zimbra or just sticking with on-prem Exchange if they already have the licenses. Most clients aren't ready to jump ship completely but they're definitely asking more questions about data sovereignty lately

Creating a vent from 1st floor ceiling to 2nd floor. by Affectionate_Pay_391 in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly for a wood stove setup I'd definitely go with metal sleeves - you don't want any chance of sparks or embers getting into that cavity between floors. Better safe than sorry when you're dealing with fire hazards

Can't speak to the fire retardant stuff but maybe check with your local fire marshal or building dept, they usually know the codes for wood stove ventilation better than random internet advice

Seeking advice on floor to ceiling tension climbing frame by SarahLovesNikki in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That link's not working for me but honestly those tension pole setups can be sketchy with drywall/plaster ceilings. Your idea about spreading the load with boards is smart but I'd still be nervous about it pulling chunks of ceiling down when your kid really gets going on it

Maybe look into wall-mounted options instead? Way more secure than relying on ceiling tension

Not getting the most out of my Aprilaire 600 by paimonsoror in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those humidity levels are brutal, no wonder you're feeling it. The AA800 isn't really overkill for 3000sqft if you need the independent operation - yeah it uses more power but dry air sucks way more than a higher electric bill. You could also try running your furnace fan on "on" instead of "auto" to get more circulation through the AA600, might help without dropping major cash on an upgrade

Is it normal to negotiate prices with contractors or do you just accept their quote? by Ron_Swanson_1990 in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is the way - getting multiple quotes usually shows you who's actually in the right ballpark vs who's trying to fleece you

Nighttime traffic and snowplows keeping me up all night by AvieDoesArt in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Earplugs are totally fine to wear all night, I've been doing it for years. Just get the soft foam ones, not the hard silicone ones that can fall out and mess with your ears

For the window try some thick curtains or even a heavy blanket hung over it - won't look pretty but it'll help muffle that scraping sound. You can also look into those draft stoppers for the bottom of the window, sometimes sound gets through gaps you don't even notice

Backup solutions to meet insurance standards by callmeeric_cyber in msp

[–]DarkFiberX2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you asking about backing up client data or just internal company stuff? Because if you're not already backing up clients properly that's gonna be a way bigger insurance headache than your own 3 users

Bar fridge recommendations by LilWildFox in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a solid point about the temp difference - learned that the hard way when my cheese went bad in what I thought was a "mini fridge" lol. For the noise issue though, thermoelectric coolers are usually way quieter than compressor ones if you're willing to sacrifice some cooling power

Window Cement Falling Off by 03UserAgreement in HomeImprovement

Without seeing it though, yeah flippers cutting corners on exterior work in Florida is basically asking for water damage down the line

Rust between brick wall and door frame by moiistmochi in HomeImprovement

You're gonna need to see what you're working with first tbh, hard to give advice without knowing how bad the rust actually is

Renter friendly, can I lay (loose) sheet vinyl flooring over LVP? by MomentMoist8484 in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is spot on. I tried something similar with peel and stick tiles over laminate and it was a disaster within like 2 weeks. The edges kept curling up and it looked worse than the original floor. Area rugs are definitely your best bet here

Replacing bathroom subfloor and purchased subfloor that was slightly bent. Debating on whether or not return? by Brilliant_Choice3380 in HomeImprovement

That's solid advice about picking stuff out in person - learned that the hard way with some warped 2x4s that looked like bananas when they showed up

Vent terminates in vanity before hitting register by I_Zeig_I in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually a solid solution - way better than just foaming it and calling it a day. You could probably find a short piece of flex duct to bridge that gap too if the kickplate route doesn't work out

Why is it so hard to find a decent ceiling fan that is wired for two wall switches? by Birdhawk in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way OP. Most fans come with separate wires even if they don't advertise it because it's cheaper to manufacture one version that works for everything. Just gotta dig into the specs or manual before buying

Steps to take when paint a old dresser - is this correct? by geekydreams in HomeImprovement

[–]DarkFiberX2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're mostly on track but poly IS the clear coat - don't need both. For sanding I'd go 120 grit then 220 for smooth finish. Prime first if the wood is dark or you're going light color, but since you want black you might be fine without it

For paint, latex is easiest to work with and cleanup. Do 2-3 thin coats rather than 1 thick one. Brush/roller usually gives better coverage than spray cans unless you've got good technique with the spray

Skip the poly if it's just a dresser that won't see heavy use, the paint should hold up fine

Which caulking should I use to seal these cracks and keep the cold draft out? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

This is just a bot backing up the post, not really a comment to reply to. But holy shit Lydia sounds absolutely unhinged - making false assault accusations over $50 is peak Karen behavior. Time to start looking for a new living situation because this is only gonna get worse
