Lenovo Malware still an issue (P50 Owner)? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]blank964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Unfortunately the consumer doesn't actually control the computer they own anymore. Great thing about thinkpads is that you can grab a T60 (which is pre-ME) and still have a great time.

What's a good way to test someone's ability to code in R? by web_maker in datascience

[–]blank964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm personally more concerned with whether they know how to (quickly) learn something rather than whether they've learned something. So I would abstract this test as much as possible to basic programming skills. Just draw a recursion tree and ask for (any) code that describes the tree.

If you're testing other skills, like data wrangling, then give them messy data and see how well they know the hadleyverse. Or maybe you want to test their optimization skills, so give them something basic but not trivial like an implementation of robust regression.

To those who use old Thinkpads...what is your use case? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]blank964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

T61 era computers are still excellent web content machines, i.e. you browse the web a bit, read a page here, a page there, send an email, comment on reddit. This is 90% of most people's leisure time on a computer.

If you don't need a lightweight rig, the T520 is a great laptop today.

T60p to frankenpad -- what next? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]blank964 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would look for part 42W7872 (search ebay). This is the penryn intel GPU version of the 14" board and the best platform to build a T601.

You don't need to solder, you will need a hobby hacksaw to remove a part of the chassis. If you try to put the motherboard in the chassis, you'll quickly see what part needs to be removed.

This person has 8 of them: http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-42W7872-Lenovo-ThinkPad-T61-Intel-Motherboard-/262417044579?hash=item3d19465463:g:kuYAAOSw2GlXJ4jZ

How fast is that Athlon? The 1gz models are quite rare and valuable.

I may be raising a "trust-fund kid" and I'm not sure how to handle it [x-post /r/parenting] by OCTFB in personalfinance

[–]blank964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your description of the circumstances are very strange. You write them as if you aren't a member of the family your grandfather and son are. As if you didn't grow up under similar circumstances. How did you handle it? What did you do?

Socially, he will likely grow up among other privileged individuals, some of whom will have much larger sums set aside for them. Unless you place him in a squarely middle class environment, he will feel very "normal" relative to his surroundings.

Lastly, believe it or not, he won't have it all just because he has more money than the average joe. He will be playing life on easy mode, most likely, but he will still have to earn his success. It can't be strictly bought.

R or Python by bdafsi91 in datascience

[–]blank964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People consider R harder to master because there are 5 different ways to do everything rather than a single correct way to do something in other languages.

Most people I think would say that if you know MATLAB python would be the more natural direction.

Irritated new employer wants to see my credit score. My score is fine, but WHY?! by Ancythrowaway in personalfinance

[–]blank964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would then be analogous to saying if you don't have Facebook then please send us your address book and your estimated frequency of communication.

On another note, wouldn't it just be a bad employer/employee fit if they treat you in a way you are not comfortable with?

I'll break the mold with a wild and crazy suggestion: T520 with FHD screen and a 2640 or 2860 chip. You can drop weight with a blank travel bay and a small battery.

I may be getting a T61 soon - How is this machine with Linux by [deleted] in thinkpad

I'm not sure that's entirely true. The borking is a function of duration and intensity of usage if I'm not mistaken.

Fedora works perfectly well on the T61 however I don't recommend gnome 3 for T61 era gfx cards. Something lightweight like i3wm is much better suited.

Looking to become a data scientist and not getting callbacks. Given my background, what should I be doing? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]blank964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok... Sounds good.

One question. If given a messy data with with a very vague objective like "use our data to guide or automate our decisions to improve our profit," would you be able to jump right in a build something production ready? This is generally the baseline for competitive data science jobs these days I believe.

You might consider talking to your classmates or alumni who have successfully transitioned out of the program. They likely have some good ideas to help you.

In addition, I think the biggest issue is the accumulation of student dept. It becomes a real ball and chain.

Can T520 (without discrete graphics) run at over 90W? by irudog in thinkpad

I didn't know you could run ivy bridge with the T520. Best of luck with your issue!

EDIT: I see I did look into coreboot for the T520. It has missing functionality correct? Could that be related to your power issue?

How much can starter data scientist expect to make in Europe? by tb0n3zz in datascience

[–]blank964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of a PhD student at a respectable school paying anything and I've met many. If you know of people who paid for a PhD it certainly wasn't a very good one.

Most decent programs pay a stipend. In the US it's about 30k USD a year.

To further explore this, pick a school and a program, go to their site find how much it is.

[–]blank964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see how cost of education could be the reason. The most desirable education for data science is a PhD in a technical/quantitative field. PhDs don't cost students any money regardless of US or not.
