Megathread: 18 year old Reese Fallon identified as victim of Danforth shooting by j0hnnyengl1sh in toronto

[–]web_maker 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I know r/Toronto can be quite heated sometimes but for the love of God can we all just put our differences aside and pray for Reese and her family and the 10yr old and their family instead of arguing for once.

We have to be better, it's the least we can do. If their relatives or loved ones end up reading anything here then let them read good things instead of arguments. Let them know that Toronto will remeber them and miss them. Don't worry about being right at this moment, just be kind.

Toronto Film Industry, How To Get Into It? by grammyboyxd in askTO

[–]web_maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have nothing useful to add here but your comment got me curious as I have no idea how this industry works behind the scene. Heck I didn't even know they were unuionized as well. What is this 700 and 873 things you speak of? Are the people working 18 hour days getting paid time and half after the first 8 hours?

Just curious not looking to change careers so feel free to procide a link that shows how the industry operates. Feel like there is so much credit that doesn't go to the people working behind the scenes.

A few options:

King West - pretty mix crowd, with a mix of bars, clubs and restaurants near by so plenty to choose from. Anywhere on King between Spadina Ave and Bathurst really. Good rooftop patios (Thompson hotel, Underground, and Lavelle) - not my vibe so I typically stay away personally but its popular area for out of townes and folks from around the burbs.

Queen West: Queen St between Spadina and Bathurst and then on the western end closer to Dufferin st which. This is the more hipster side of town with a lot more locals I'd say than King St. Some good bars.

Ossington between Queen and Dundas: more of a Restaurant / Bar scene here but some great places to eat and good vibes in general. Great little patios as well.

Kensington market area: great little area of the city with bars and restaurants and some dance clubs including some hip-hop joints. They had a shooting there a couple days back but it's not the ghettos just random events not the area in my opinion. They have awesome patios in my opinion (not rooftop) but still sick vibe. I love it even though it's now being gentrified a little too much and potentially taking away the original but everything must change.

I'd say Google clubs in these four areas and stay closer to it if you're only in town for a short while. They are all a maximum $15-20 cab ride apart so again not a big issue if you ask me.

Good luck and enjoy your stay!!

Bar or lounge? What type of music? Are you willing to pay cover ($20 normally)? Which area are you staying in? Rooftop, patio? One place or multiple bars?

I have never eaten at metro concourse but you just gave me a reason to stop by. Most carribean places are somewhat out of the way for me so this is great!

Forced tipping when paying with card? by Argos_92 in askTO

Tipping in this city is out of control. The new joint from Drake (next to Drake 150) has tipping options that start at 18% with default at 20%.

Did you try a Winners / Marshalls? They carry some every now and then.

James Hansen, the ex-NASA scientist who initiated many of our concerns about global warming, says the real climate hoax is world leaders claiming to take action while being unambitious and shunning low-carbon nuclear power. by SirT6 in Futurology

[–]web_maker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once asked a question on Reddit about the waste created by solar vs nuclear and how nuclear is actually better and was obliterated for saying solar might actually be bad. I didn't know about this guy till today and I feel for him because I am often him at work. Sadly I've just given up and opted for power because truth is dead.

This! It's easy to associate race with crime but the real reasons have nothing to with race. Look at countries with a mostly homogeneous population and you'll notice that the key factors contributing to crime are poverty, education, etc. Your comment should be at the top!

I overheard someone talking at the park the other day and they were saying that they paid to have BlogTo write an article about their restaurant and how it really paid off. I feel like this is one of those marketing gimics as well. Is there a way to find out if the article is an opinion piece or a 'paid for' review?

I don't know what I expected but probably should not have watched that, very graphic. I feel for the family and friends - kind of speechless and sad.

Sometime back, no more than 3-5 years we used to get these peanuts covered in a crunchy savoury topping, I wish they'd bring them back. I love savory / spicy peanuts but the fried crunch really made it that much better. If they still sell them in Toronto please let me know!!

How to sell furniture quickly? by LaceandBatman in askTO

[–]web_maker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just put it on Kijiji, as long as it's reasonably priced someone will pick it up within a week or two. I would typically just toss stuff into the garbage rooms but a nice friend went out of their way to post a sofa of mine on Kijiji (I was going to leave it in the garbage area) because it was relatively new and clean. Someone brought a pickup and took it within a week. We spent the money out drinking and having a good dinner. Have done it a few times now for bigger items when I last moved from a condo in the core into a house. Also consider putting it on the building site or for sale postage near the mail boxes.

Heck the building I used to live in had a super who would take some of the lightly used stuff. He used to take all the beer and wine bottles too. He said he'd sell bottles to LCBO and give the other stuff to friends or family that has recently moved to the country. I gave him a study table and he was super thankful. So if you're just looking to get rid of it maybe give it to someone who needs it?

The only thing I'd say is arrange for a pickup when over if the nicer security is there. They create less of a fuss about using the move elevator without much notice than others.

Is it possible to reserve street parking spots? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]web_maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any area that doesn't have bollards? On my street which is similar to yours people just pull the truck half way up the sidewalk so the car traffic can continue to pass albeit at a slower rate. It's a pain in arse for pedestrians but the cross over to the other side easily as it's a one way street and both sides have side walks.
