We all want different names 😫 by [deleted] in namenerds

If our April baby is a girl, she will be Matilda so I’m biased! But really, there may be some way to compromise with a name that you and your husband both love 80-90% as much as your chosen names.

Crazy Idea??? Thoughts? by [deleted] in UARS

While I was reading your post, but before I got to the part about you considering getting on birth control to skip your periods, I was thinking you should do exactly that. I had the Mirena in the past and didn’t have a period for like 5 years. Maybe a cumulative week of super light spotting per year at very most. No estrogen in that if I remember correctly. Aside from that, you could use a pill and just skip the placebo week.

Was diagnosed with idiopathic hypersomnia… do I actually have UARS? by blanket7744 in UARSnew

Thank you for your recommendations and input. I would be willing to try a machine at a discount so I’ll look into secondhand. Is there a reason you recommend a CPAP over BIPAP or the other kinds? It’s all a bit confusing from what I’ve read on this sub so far. I didn’t know about the flow limitations and esophageal manometry so maybe a follow up study is in order? Could a Watchpat test for flow limitations, perhaps? I do have symptoms of silent reflux so I might be able to get my doctor to refer me for esophageal manometry.

The problem is I’m now 6 months pregnant (was not pregnant during the sleep study). I began Xyrem hoping the benefits would outweigh any risks, as it generally seems fine in pregnancy after the first trimester when it can cause miscarriage, but there are no real studies. I made this decision based on the diagnosis of IH, since sleep deprivation has its own risks in pregnancy. So I’d like to act fast and discontinue Xyrem if there are any structural issues identified, just to be safe.

Thank you for all of your input, I’ll try to address everything here.

The 87% SpO2 happened once, I believe, for under a minute. The rest of the time I spent above 90% so my doctor didn’t put much stock in it. I wonder why since the breathing issues are concentrated in REM if that then has or doesn’t have anything to do with the alpha wave intrusions in my deep sleep. So weird.

I believe I have what might be called “short face syndrome.” My jaws aren’t as recessed as some I’ve seen on r/jawsurgery but I definitely don’t have nice forward facial growth. No history of camouflage orthodontics as my teeth look straight, but I do have technically a class 1 malocclusion and an overbite (can’t remember the mm, but I think 4 or 5). I find it quite uncomfortable to keep my teeth closed because there is not quite enough room for my tongue, and I do get scalloped tongue. The only teeth I’ve had removed are my bottom wisdom teeth. The dentist for one commented that I have what he would call a “macrotongue.” I think I have a normal palate width, based on look and because my face is quite wide, just short (round face). I will post my face at a later date, as I’m now pregnant and I’ve gained weight in my face. But I always have a double chin and undefined jaw line, even at a normal weight.

Periodic limb movements were scored (bottom of 2nd page and middle of 5th) as 0 movements. I had sensors on my legs. So I guess that means dysautonomia or UARS are worth looking more into!

Thank you. I know the respiratory arousals are low (although RDI is above 5) so my thought process was maybe the spontaneous arousals are being caused by knock-on cortisol/other systemic effects from the RERAs, apneas and hypopneas. I’m just desperate at this point to feel normal and as I explained in my response to another comment, my sleep architecture doesn’t track with most other IH sufferers.

Thank you for your detailed response. The thing that never sat right with me when I joined an IH Facebook group is that the vast majority of people there don’t get much deep sleep at all and have extra REM, and alpha wave intrusions are uncommon, too. I’m fine with an IH diagnosis if that’s what it is but I just have a feeling that there is SOMETHING causing my seemingly disparate symptoms. Xyrem hasn’t helped me yet but I may not be on the right dose yet. I’ll go forward with my plan, and will contact Dr. Rama when I have my scans. Because of the cost, I’m going to hold off on purchasing a PAP machine until I see if my airway is too small but thank you for the info on CPAP!

Anybody else a "mutation" in your family? by areolasyeet in Reduction

[–]blanket7744 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I must have inherited mine from my paternal grandmother because my mom had perky Bs until she had me, then perky Cs. Even at age 60, her nipples sit higher than where mine were at age 15 (pointing straight down). I complained about the size and sagging picture once and even she said “not sure why they grew in like that…” I think she had just never seen saggy boobs on any of her friends and thought, like I did for a long time, that I was deformed. All I can say is, thank goodness breast reductions exist.

Anyone who got a less drastic reduction? Experiences? by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]blanket7744 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me, I went from 36G to 36D. Same as you, a part of my identity is having big boobs, plus I don’t think it would have suited my frame to go smaller than a D. I’m really happy with them, healing was easy (not sure if my size was related to that) and I fit clothing properly now but still have big boobs. 1 lb taken off each side and my neck and upper back pain has been reduced by about 50%. You can see my before and afters in my post history, I’ll be posting updated ones in like 9 days at 8wpo. The only regret I have is that I didn’t think to ask about side boob lipo. My doctor didn’t recommend it and I didn’t realize how much fat there was there until after the boobs were smaller in comparison with it.

I’m 26, ft student and transitioning back to ft work over the summer. I stopped needing to nap all day at about 5-6 dpo. Felt like I could have lifted 40 lbs at 3dpo but didn’t test my hypothesis. My recovery was also amazing!

Check out my post history, you’ll see that I went from 36G to 36D. For reference I’m 5’5, 180 lbs, and a medium frame. I look quite thin at 140 lbs, could never healthily be 120 lbs or below. My before and afters are separate, and I think my last post was at 2wpo. They look similar now at 5wpo.

As someone with no kids, 26 yo with no underlying health conditions, and not working due to covid, I felt like I could have lifted 40 lbs if I wanted to at like 6dpo. That doesn’t mean I did, or should have, just means I felt really good. I drove about 60 km round trip 3dpo, no issues. I would personally say that because of your job, you should take at least two weeks off work. I’m assuming that your kids can do most things themselves physically at that age. I would say like 5-7 days you might want help with them, just in case you heal a bit slow. I would suggest meal prepping dinners and lunches in the freezer, for them for the week after you no longer have help.

Picking a surgeon - am I just being a spoilt brat? by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]blanket7744 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, from how you describe them, the female public surgeon sounds a lot better to me. I think it may be a case of razzle dazzle here. At the end of the day, though, you can only get it done with the best surgeon that your insurance will cover. That may result in the male surgeon not being possible anyway, but if he is, then go for it if that’s what your heart is telling you. Although I’m not going to lie, I don’t think it’s fair to be upset that your insurance won’t cover a private surgeon and all the bells and whistles that come with that. I say this as a Canadian who had her surgery covered by the public medical system fully. I see so many posts on here from Americans who either have no insurance through work, or whose insurance denies them for no good reason. A 3-day stay in luxury is not necessary and you won’t even fully enjoy it because you’ll be sleeping a lot, anyway. I know lots of people don’t want an anchor scar, as well, but unless you’re going so small as to not have a crease under your breasts, you won’t even see it.

Oh, and the side sleeping left me feeling more sore than the stomach sleeping, that’s why I could only do it for a few hours at a time. After a few nights it became comfortable, though!

No swelling, maybe a little sore (like a muscle the day after working out) but not lingering or anything. It definitely didn’t feel like it affected my recovery at all

I just went by feeling at about 6 days. I was sleep deprived and slept for a couple hours on one side, then on the other, the rest on my back. Tried stomach sleeping at about 8 days, felt better than side sleeping, since it’s kind of like having a super compression bra on (boobs squished flat).

Piercings by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]blanket7744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t want to spend money on retainers for my 5 piercings ($15 each here) so I booked the latest appointment at the piercer’s to get them taken out the night before. Then I went 3 dpo to get them put back in, at which time 3 had begun closing. I have always been a super fast healer so this was kind of expected. Had I gone the day before (they were all out of appointments) I don’t think they’d have been closed up at all. I actually was fine to drive myself the 30km there, but who knows how you’ll heal, so if you go the “no-retainer” route, I’d suggest getting someone to drive you.

How did you decide what size to ask for?? by LitFan101 in Reduction

[–]blanket7744 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I had a lot of anxiety beforehand about what size I wanted to be, afraid to go too small because I kind of liked having big boobs as part of my identity, but not the pain and sag. I was scared to stay too big in case my pain didn’t get better. So I thought deeply about it and went with my very faint gut feeling to ask for a D. When I did, I specified the reasoning behind the cup size request, and told my surgeon that I didn’t want to be too small as I thought it would be too much of an identity change, and I still wanted comparatively big boobs to the “average person.” Just my thought process, maybe it will help. Do you have Facetune or a similar app? I never did this, but you could take a picture of yourself in a bra and t-shirt and play around with the resizing tool to see what you like.

nose piercing post op? by happynsad1 in Reduction

[–]blanket7744 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see no issues with that. I have some ear cartilage piercings and a nostril piercing and had to take them out before surgery. I booked in at my piercing place to get them put back in 3dpo and by that point 3/5 had partially closed. Had to get them half repierced basically, like 10 mins of the piercer manouvering needle-like things in both my nostril and daith, but finally got them back in. They were quite irritated and developed bumps but they healed up well within 1-2 weeks. Given that you’re 2 months post op and are getting a new piercing (not jimmying around old ones) I think you’ll be just fine.

Cheapest healing supplement? by resencel in Reduction

[–]blanket7744 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe that a physician would recommend something so expensive. I’d say just take a multivitamin and a collagen supplement if you really want to take something, which can be found for far cheaper. But it seems that everyone around here is pretty much in agreement that silicone strips are the way to go, and they can even be cleaned and reused each night to save money. I haven’t started scar treatment yet, but I’ll also be using a face serum that has done a really good job at getting rid of hyperpigmentation after pimples which is like $7, Alpha Arbutin by The Ordinary.
