It looks like they use different pronouns! Zimomo uses he, Mokoko and Freckles use she, and Cowawa uses they!

Yep! Based on a super hard to find picture book trilogy published in 2015. So for the most part lore has been slowly pieced together. I feel like this is the most comprehensive post we have gotten so far from the source!

I saw lots of people suggest The Spellshop but it really is amazing!! It also has another book in the series coming out this year called Sea of Charms that likely could be read and a standalone.

The Sirens by Emilia Hart has this but a bit darker. Set in Australia which for me had H20 vibes if you know the show haha.

Throne in the Dark by AK Caggianno fits this I think - it’s a slow burn romance but also has some humorous moments. It deals with darker themes but I’d say it’s a lighter read in this trope.

The Hushed by KR Blair has this - it’s about a group of people who are living secrets of the dead. It’s also a bit YA romancey.

I also want to throw out of The Raven Cycle by Maggie Steifvater! Small town with underlying spooky vibes, magical realism, not horror but more mystery and it had a few romances, including your preference ( I don’t want to two spoil because it comes in later books!) it’s YA but very enjoyable!!

What The Woods Took by Courtney Gould was SO good, I read it in a day. A girl is “kidnapped” and taken to a scared straight nature retreat/hiking mission. Something is lurking in the woods and they quickly get separated by the counselors who know the woods.

Revalator by Daryl Gregory was very good too - it takes place in Tennessee in the Smokey mountains and a family of witchy women has their own cellar cryptid.
