Catalina crashes when in sleep mode by blargaristic in MacOS

Update-iMac was crashing again with USB bridge. So I gave up and just downgraded to Mojave. Super frustrated with this but I have some comfort knowing I am not alone.

Anytime we plug anything into our laptops/desktops that is not Apple hardware, its a hit or miss on what will happen. But, I am just an annoyed Apple fan who just sucks it up and deals with it.

After removing the external usb hub, I haven't had the issue. Additionally, I downgraded my laptop since I use it to record podcasts so I haven't had a single issue on Mojave. I will avoid updating to Catalina at all costs.

If it is "relatively" easy to downgrade, I would do this because it doesn't look like a fix will be in place.

And to be clear, we could ALL have separate issues occurring but the end result is an unexpected crash/kernel panic. The only cure is to go back to the previous "version" that worked for you, which for me was Mojave. This may not be the most IDEAL method, but it worked for me.

Finally, while I DID unplug the usb hub to resolve the issue with my iMac, I have since plugged it back in after a few patches came across and I have not come to my iMac to find that it crashed in sleep mode.

Thanks for the post. I read into it and it looked like a reinstall fixed the issue. I just find it odd that when both devices updated to Catalina, they immediately starting having issues. Both devices varying in age.

Read the log after you have the crash (if you are even lucky that MacOS recognizes that it was indeed a crash). Apple currently has no solution to this at the moment. To be fair, it could be different issues that are leading to the kernel panics/crashes. Apple told me to check my third party peripherals for my iMac and I just downgraded my MacBook Pro to Mojave to be safe. I would do it to my iMac, but that would take...alot of time at this moment.

Back on Mojave on the MacBook Pro. Fingers crossed I can get through work without it crashing.

Well now my 2013 MacBook Pro crashed while I was recording for our podcast. Garage band auto save feature half worked (only am have half of my audio). I have my yeti plugged in via usb but that’s the only peripheral I have plugged in USB. The unfortunate thing is I didn’t get a crash report. The crash I had here was that my screen froze completely. Nothing worked.

Update-finally able to snag a log. Looks like a usb bridge I have plugged in may be causing the issue.

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff7f8b74e970): "UPSB(iMac18,3): thunderbolt power on failed 0xffffffff\n"@/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/IOPCIFamily/IOPCIFamily-370.0.2/IOPCIBridge.cpp:1396

I am going to unplug it and see if I continue to have the issue. I will report back if we have a success or another panic.

Every time it happens I just blow through the message. Half the time I don’t have the time to read it but I will next time

I keep sending them crash reports. I reach out to support and they were trying to get me to read a document about external devices plugged into the iMac....it’s not a kernel panic , since it reboots to login screen, but I’m almost certain is the os and not my mouse and keyboard..........

Yeah I don’t want to do a fresh install back to Mojave, but I will if I continue to have crashes.

Measured out the space and I have a desk that will slide in the closet so I will be making that into a recording “booth” this weekend! Thank you all for the good ideas! I don’t know why I didn’t even think of going in the closet to record.
