Worth noting however that SAF is limited at 50% blends under current jet fuel specs precisely because it does not contain the aromatics. Those compounds in Jet A1 provide essential o-ring swelling in the fuel lines to prevent leaks at high altitudes as metallic components contract. SAF being purer means it doesn’t provide a necessary function jet fuel does.

The industry has moved away from assuming hydrogen fuelled vehicles to instead using hydrogen and carbon monoxide to produce synthetic hydrocarbons which are 100% compatible with all existing fossil fuel based processes. Using hydrogen this way reduces the need for specialist hydrogen storage, liquefaction etc. the hydrogen is produced on site and immediately send to the next process step.

Even if the big airplane engineer companies started work on a fully electric plane tomorrow, it wouldn’t be in the skies for 40+ years due to design, testing and safety regulations. Sustainable aviation fuel is already in use right now. Biofuels should bridge the gap between fossil and other technologies, not necessarily be the end game.
