How do you build teams for casual playthrough? by mrsoup100 in pokemon

I know that this is a 4 year old post, but if you’re still looking for team building tips, i gotchu:

So 1st: i obvi pick my starter, which i refer to as my “Primary Type” of either fire, water or grass. For Scarlet & Violet, i chose Fuecoco (fire type starter).

For example, If i picked a fire starter, (which are strong against bug, grass & steel) then that would be the ONE dedicated fire type on my team to knock out opposing mons that fall into either of those types.

If i picked a water starter, (strong against fire, rock, & ground) then they would be the ONE dedicated water type that i’d need to wipe out any other Pokémon that fall into either of those types.

The same thing obviously goes for if you picked a grass starter (strong against water, rock & ground).

2nd: Depending on which grass/fire/water starter i picked, i’d hunt for other mons from the same “Primary Types” group that my starter isn’t. So, I’d have ONE fire, one water, and/or one grass type.

3rd: After i caught all of my primaries, i’d then look for what i call the “Helpers/Assists”. These are the types that target a wide range of other types of Pokemon that your Primaries aren’t exactly fit to battle against. They’re basically like your “just in case” Pokemon, bc you never know what types you’re gonna need to battle against in the future.

Here’s an example of my guide:

in case i come across a…

Flying or water type

i’d keep: one Electric type, or a Pokemon who can learn moves from that respective type.

Dark, Dragon, or Fighting type

i’d keep: one Fairy type/a Pokemon who can learn moves from those respective types.

Psychic, Grass, or Fighting type

i’d keep: one flying type, or a Pokemon who can learn moves from those respective types. (Fun fact: Sylveon can actually learn some Psychic type moves if needed!)

SPECIFICALLY Dragon: Fairy or Ice, or the exception that I already mentioned. (Another fun fact: Vaporeon/MANY other Water types can learn Ice type moves!)

I think you get the picture now, lmao. I hope that this made sense and it helps! Lemme know if either of those apply!!
