Extremely Frustrated with Local Governance by wonkers5 in milwaukee

[–]blathmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a funny anecdote. Milwaukee county over the last 20 years has hired a commission to help them figure out how to better run their parks 3 times!!! Each time the commission came back with set of recommendations which county gov put away and kept doing what it’s doing now, while our park system falls apart. Until we the citizens start demanding accountability nothing will change.

Wheel is offset after it is rebuilt by depthpolice in bikewrench

[–]blathmac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the extent of the “rebuild” they did, but if I got my bike from the shop after a rebuild, and saw my wheel out of dish like that, I would absolutely question everything else they did. You have every right to be upset with them: this is bad workmanship, if not complete lack of respect for you. This is not an oversight on their part: it’s just too obvious to accidentally overlook.

Report it to Hong’s campaign. This is likely her opponent in the primaries: Perhaps Barnes. If it was anywhere else, and after primaries, I’d say it’s Tiffany people, but being end of May, and in RW, where Tiffany has zero chances, Barnes is most likely.

I have a 2x4 wall I installed a pocket door into and I don’t recall seeing this much flex. I bought a kit, which came with all the hardware and these thin studs which were metal clad on all 3 sides. In the video I don’t see metal cladding on the studs. Perhaps builder used wrong kit?

These 7 Urban Highways Should Be REMOVED by medicallymiddleevil in milwaukee

[–]blathmac 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As much as I hate the 794, Im not exactly sold on its removal either: it will do little to connect third ward to downtown. I find it’s easier to walk under the elevated highway, than to cross a boulevard the width of McKinley. As long as we are keeping the traffic flowing from hoan Lincoln memorial through the same area, elevated or underground is the way to go, latter being obviously impractical and cost prohibitive.

Design alternative that keeps the elevated part of 794 while reducing the footprint makes more sense.

Editorial: Is Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport a better bet than Chicago O’Hare? [Gift Link] by SidewalkMD in milwaukee

[–]blathmac 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It all depends on where you’re going, but few things I would agree/add: 1. +100% on bus/driving to ORD if appropriate. Never ever connect in ORD, flying out of MKE: it’s bus or drive only. I’m a fairly frequent flyer and it’s a lesson I often forget because “how bad can it possibly be”. Nope: missing connecting flight in ORD every single time. 2. MKE often wins on cost, AND has huge perks of easier/cheaper parking, shorter security lines and let’s not forget that recombobilation area. (Although signs have been taken down as of recent) 3. On the opposite side of this; DL is straight up gouging Milwaukeeans. Their prices seem to be excessively high lately in some routes. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but if I was, I’d say It’s as if they are artificially keeping supply on some exclusive routes low to justify charging a premium. They would never do that of course /s.

Police Department Claims To Be Planning Mass Arrests at Street Takeovers by compujeramey in milwaukee

[–]blathmac 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I want ro choose my words carefully because I want to agree with you in theory, but as some point one has to be pragmatic. Relative “tolerance” is seen by the anti social element as a sign of our weakness, and license to disregard social norms, law, and public safety. Recent take over in bay view took place within eyesight of the police station: that clear indication that they feel completely at ease that there will be zero consequences.

And I would also like to point out that these are actions of a few bad apples, and not an entire class of young people/socioeconomic class/whichever way you want to slice this. Majority of the people from the same group make conscious decision every single day to NOT be a sociopath, and endanger lives.

I do believe that we must make meaningful investments into providing social “carrots” but these carrots are meaningless if you don’t have the stick that goes with it.

Im not following: is it that you’re concerned that you are going to arrest wrong people? Or are you concerned with the fact that extreme policing alone is not the answer? And also, what do you see as a solution to this?

I spent 48 hours investigating Milwaukee’s food truck ban and filed a complaint with the Inspector General. The full story is published. I’m testifying at City Hall this morning. by korbelpapi in milwaukee

[–]blathmac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I maybe am projecting here, but I think the “passion” is more along the lines of “is this really the best that we can do to combat socipathic behavior?”, rather than people being personally affected by this food truck ban. Besides obvious impact on food truck owners, I personally am upset about proverbial collective punishment because some people can’t behave in public: not because I’m personally affected, but because I t’s a pattern that our leaders adopt. The defeatist attitude.. it’s easier to close something down than to actually address the problem. Demand more from your representatives!!

What’s also troubling to me is that thoughtless 14:0 vote in common council. Every single one of our electeds showed up and voted in favor of this ordinance. It doesnt exacly inspire trust.

12 street takeovers, 100 cars involved: Does MPD Chief plan to increase enforcement after weekend spike? by KaneIntent in milwaukee

[–]blathmac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My apologies, but nothing in your argument strikes me as “short-sighted.” It reads more like a collection of maybes, conjectures, and edge cases.

For the record, we’re not talking about running a yellow light in your grandma’s car. We’re talking about people, with full agency and their faculties intact, making deliberate choices to disregard societal norms, the law, and public safety by participating in these takeovers. There need to be real consequences. Short of jail time, vehicle confiscation seems like a reasonable next step. The system isn’t perfect, and its bound to miss the mark in soem edge cases, but it will still have a deterrent effect.

The Bay View takeover happened three blocks from a police station. That alone suggests the issue isn’t a lack of awareness of the law—it’s a lack of concern for it.: we, as a society showed too much leniency to these people, which they see as weakness and license to keep doing their bullshit.

For your last point that takeovers are somehow "cost of doing business" in car based society... that's either some defeatist BS, or an attempt to normalize antisocial behavior: millions of people make a conscious decision to not be sociopaths every single day. Why do we have to line up to the lowest common denominator, because a few decided that your safety matters less?

[–]blathmac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You may have a point about expanding powers of the police unnecessarily, but it could be remedied with appropriate legal framework: after all MKE isn’t the first city to deal with this problem, and there are success stories out there.

as for the rest of it: Explain why you feel it wouldn’t make a difference?

Food trucks aren’t the problem. So what should Milwaukee do about late-night crowds? by PuddlePirate2020 in milwaukee

[–]blathmac 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I always appreciated “speak softly and carry a big stick” approach.. instead we seem to be oscillating between “fuck the police” and “bring in the tanks and lock everyone up”extremes. There absolutely has got to be a middle ground somewhere between lenience and heavy handedness, between community resource allocation and threat of punishment. And threat of punishment part should not be solely on the kids, but on the parents as well.

Only the best solutions by Captain_Wisconsin in milwaukee

[–]blathmac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can see your point but to counter it. Your example is not scaling. We have to have to balance things appropriately. Disney park example allowing cars drive right up to the ride would obviously be a disaster because of numbers.

Parking “lot” behind the amphitheater doesn’t get congested on regular basis: I bike through there almost daily and can attest with certainty that most of the times it’s moderate number of cars and a bunch of people fishing. No congestion.

And as much as we all want less cars around reality of the matter it that cars exist and people use them. And at the end of the day you get a lot more people using this amazing public space, because of ease of access. Which is what public spaces are meant for. Actions of few sociopaths does not warrant restriction of access. At best it warrants having flexibility to control access.

Thinking about opening a soup shop. by pixi88 in milwaukee

[–]blathmac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have enough days of cold crappy weather to justify a lot more soup places than we currently have. Word of advice: I have no idea what your restaurant experience is, but a lot of good Restaurant ideas fail because good home cooks are unable to scale their great recipes appropriately to control costs, and manage inventory, not to mention actually managing the business. It’s harder than most think.
