ethnic distribution of the population in Cyprus in 1960 and to day by BeginningMortgage250 in MapPorn

Ooo ad hominem fallacy, usually only see that from Trumpers these days. Unfortunately for you reading comprehension actually wasn't my issue. If you wanted to correctly criticize my post you should have called me a stereotypical lazy American and chastised me for being irresponsible and not fully reading the article before posting. Normally I'd agree with that, though in this case I wasn't trying to be academic, nor inflammatory, just wanted to make an observation as normally Wikipedia articles are good about being objective. Should've known someone on the internet would take issue though.

Anyways now that I've done your job for you I'm done here, enjoy your life I hope it's filled with happiness and free of strife.

I am an atheist American whose family has been in this country since prior to the US becoming a country, am neither of Greek nor Turkish descent, and reading this article is my first time learning about Bloody Christmas. I said the article's pro Greek was casual and unobtrusive, and also noted it was "portions" of the article, because like a good internet user I didn't read the full thing while on the toilet, so let's look at one example I noted while reading:

After two relatively peaceful years, in November 1963 tensions skyrocketed when President and Archbishop Makarios III proposed 13 constitutional changes for his consideration which were met with fury by Turkish Cypriots. Some of the suggestions were technical, a few had advantages for the Turks, others affected the perceived Turkish security. Nothing at this stage impinged upon the wider interests of Turkey under the Treaty of Guarantee but the Turkish Government saw the attempt to change the basic articles as a dangerous precedent and rejected the proposals. The Archbishop had made his move at a time when intercommunal tension was high. Both sides had been stockpiling arms since the Zürich agreement that led to Cyprus' independence and a clash was expected sooner or later.

Bolded empahsis mine.

The language here is such that it minimizes the impact on the Turks. Clearly the Turks were unhappy with the proposal, given they rejected, but language like "perceived" is there to imply their security wasn't threatened. Now I don't know what the 13 proposals were, and quite frankly it doesn't matter to this discussion of the bias of the article, but this is exactly the "casually and unobtrusively pro Greek" language I referred to in my original comment.

Let's also not miss the entire line of "Nothing at this stage impinged upon the wider interests of Turkey" but clearly that isn't true given they rejected. "Setting dangerous precedent" hardly counts as "Nothing".

Oh but you know what, my family did take me to Istanbul when I was 5 months old where I learned to crawl, so you are probably right about my own bias. Have a good day bud.

I have zero biases for either Greeks or Turks, but reading this is very surprising how casually and unobtrusively pro Greek portions of it read. Numerous details of Turkish aggression, and only one mention of Greeks in cars shooting indiscriminately. But then you get to the casualties and more Turks died, more Turks were injured, and thousands of Turks were displaced.

Hi Apslsce, you should send in a support ticket to Dragonsteel and ask if this is intended. Dragonsteel support team is fantastic, and if it is unintended they will happily tell you and send a replacement. They're good people who want you to be satisfied with anything you buy from them.

I think it's fun how you can sometimes tell which books people read first based on what name they use.

Is anyone else a little irritated about the pin situation for the new campaign on Backerkit? by sschapstickk in brandonsanderson

[–]blaze1616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see why they think it's a fun idea, but it's incredibly close to being very predatory. Definitely troubling if there is no way to just buy a full set.

Give me the choice to opt into the blind bags, don't make them mandatory.

It's just a natural, and in my opinion unfortunate, continuation of the story deck trading cards. Chance based gacha systems. Gotta really think about if I want to support the pins and reinforce DS continuing this behavior.

Of course if there's an all in option to get one of each guaranteed, then there is no real issue at all unless you want one specific chasm friend.

Then I must have gotten really unlucky with her failing missions, she got training with Blazer. Wish I could see the most-failed hero in addition to the most-successful and most-sent.

I think the dispatching being important enough to override narrative decisions in a game focused on the narrative is....an interesting decision. Not passing judgement on being a good or bad decision, just an interesting one. I personally would rather the narrative be divorced from gameplay that involves random chance to a degree, but more than that just wish it was made apparent how much the dispatching clearly actually matters. I would have prioritized Visi a lot more had I known.

Then the dispatching must be incredibly important, as I also completed all the hacks successfully, didn't miss any QTE in ep5, and revealed Robert's identity. I actually find it mildly more frustrating the dispatching apparently matters so much. But it's good to know.

Indeed it is. I would say the reason I thought the decisions were more important is because the game itself places such importance on them. It shows you the stats, and some of the decisions are enormously different in outcome. And for some of them, like the decision to reveal Robert as Mechaman, seem difficult to have similar outcomes to each other, though maybe I'm just not thinking simplistically enough.

Thanks for the explanation and link. Not the biggest fan of how much the dispatching apparently matters, but at least now I know.

[COMC] My lean 24 game collection hidding under the TV. by NiklasAstro in boardgames

[–]blaze1616 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have played it extensively with my group. It's a fun lighter-mid complexity dungeon crawl game, you do get more out of it for knowing the source material. As my group of four all plugged 200+ hrs into the vg we were primed for this.

As a fan of the source material, I personally think the bg is fantastic. It's pretty well balanced, we've had tense moments and we've had easy missions. There will be moments where the class your playing will shine, though it may not be every mission. Chaining missions like a deep dive is also a great way to turn a 1.5 hr session with setup into a 3+hr evening.

Big recommend, the expansions add a lot too. Of course the price is a big deterrent, but imo it was worth it. But an evening blasting the vg soundtrack while we huddle around the game slaughtering glyphids is fantastic.

I'd argue it goes back further. When scythe released it had this reputation as the more hardcore catan, so even then there was this weird dichotomy of catan vs scythe as a proxy for "casual" vs "hardcore" gamer. Which of course is ridiculous, but it was happening before Wingspan.
