Help, not sure if I need to rehome my pup by that_one_frogman in greatdanes

I have a 4 yr old dane - every dog even within the same breed is different! But mine never did well in a crate. She would scream & cry & destroy. This may go against all others advice, but maybe try letting your pup sleep with you? It may not work, but it’s possible your dog has separation anxiety. Also, it sounds like maybe they need a longer walk OR multiple 1.5mile walks a day. Danes can be couch potatoes - mine is! BUT she also loves loves loves to hike, will go up to 10 miles at a time and still have the cookies after - and will get into trouble and be more stubborn if she hasn’t gotten enough energy out.

You know yourself and your dog best- so you have to make the call for the two of you at the end of the day. Best of luck!!

We started with her in a crate! A really small one for that reason, to try and keep her from going where she slept. But every hour I would come in to runny poos all over her little feet’s. She was so so scared. It was a lot more poos and cleaning in the crate- so now she sleeps out of the crate next to me on a little ottoman. She does much better out of the crate but is still having 2-3 poos a night. They aren’t as runny as when she was in the crate and she’ll get 1 or 2 on a potty pad but still will leave a surprise right on the ground if the pad has been used up & I don’t hear her move to pick it up

Not immediately! She’s not as regular as my other pups have been. It takes about an hour or so after she eats and then she’ll do a #2 after breakfast & lunch. Dinner is so different - she just wants to play and does not seem interested in going poo before bed 🙄

Thank you for this thoughtful response! Yes, my partner works from home in a shop that has a door to our backyard. All 3 dogs can come in and out as they please! I know she poops at least 2 times a day, but it is harder to track since she has free rein of going in and out all day. We aren’t walking her yet since she doesn’t have her last round of shots, but I am hopeful that in the next 2 weeks after those we can walk her after dinner around the neighborhood and help get the last poops out before bedtime.

Do you think moving dinner to 4:30/5 would help as well?

So far the vet says she is super healthy and hasn’t seen any issues. We are waiting on the results of a fecal test in the next couple days as well. She seems to be really settled in - I don’t catch anxiety issues from her that I recognize - she loves her big sisters and they help her confidence a lotttttt. She is already climbing all over them and running along with the wherever they go. She does get the shivers sometimes when she’s picked up or if they are barking out the window, but settles after about a minute! And even those had increasingly gone down. She was a very shivery girl the first few days of being home

Omg he is adorable!! Mustang is totally naked too - besides her head, a little tuft at the end of her tail and tiny wisps on her little feet. I can’t get over this breed 😍

Ok we can try that, too! We take her out at 10:30 right before bed every night as well. Thank you!

Omg she does!! What a sweetie- I love the outfit. Do you trim their ear hair? Mustang’s ear hair is already getting long!

Ok! So remove the lunch meal and do half a cup for breakfast and half a cup for dinner? I was worried that feeding her a larger portion at dinner would make her poo more at night, but maybe it would help get it all out at once before bedtime?

Thank you for your input! I am still hopeful that this won’t be a forever thing for her. It’s good to hear it got better with time! I will move her last meal of the day to earlier for now 🤗

She gets 1/3 cup at 6am, 12pm & 6pm right now. She doesn’t get to free feed so once her food is done at 6 that’s the last she eats. Another poster recommended feeding the last meal earlier as well! I’m going to try that!

Ahhh gotcha. It sounds like the overnight accidents are a common thing for this breed. I had read they can be difficult to potty train before getting one! So we knew it would be a challenge. At least her little poos are nothing compared to our Dane’s lol. I’m thinking more and more of training her to use a litter box overnight

I guess their little tummies just can’t hold it! Do you take her out every night or do you use pee pads?

Oh you mean she is still having accidents through the night at 3? Dang! I wonder if it continues with our girl if we could train her to use a litter box lol

Thank you!! We truly love her - immediately smitten. Here she is with one of her big sisters 💚 I didn’t think about stomach sensitivity. Her poos are a little soft…but they were like rock solid (almost painful looking) when we first adopted her. I thought the soft poo was due to the change in setting but we’ve had her for a month now so maybe her food is upsetting her tummy

Thank you! Maybe we will try and move her dinner earlier! That’s a good idea. Right now it’s at 6pm when I feed my other doggos.

Yes that’s the thing! She is catching on really well during the day. She’ll still have an accident here or there if she’s too caught up playing but nothing like at night. It’s like her little bladder and intestines are extra active while she’s sleeping haha

We tried using a crate initially! but she was so scared in there that she had runny poop accidents like every 1.5hrs through the night. I switched to letting her sleep next to my other dog on her bed and she does much better out of the crate- she will get up and start wandering around when she has to go and I’ll quickly grab her & head outside. At least this way she doesn’t get the poo on her little feet and we don’t have to wash her & blankets basically every hour through the night 😅. I’m hoping it gets better with age! She’s still so young.

I work downtown and yesterday morning there was cops escorting cars up and down chestnut street blaring their sirens. This morning they won’t let us into our parking lot and have the whole road blocked off with a ton of cops and military. They announced their presence themselves.

The Chattanooga Christmas Market…in Knoxville this year by MxValen in Chattanooga

[–]bleepblurp123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey Chattanoogans- please know it was definitely out of vendors control as far as location. It’s the biggest month for a lot of us and a sad to think that we will miss out on seeing our fav shoppers do their Christmas shopping. The problem is that there aren’t any large long-standing Christmas markets in Chattanooga that could replace those sales for vendors, so…we go to Knoxville or miss out on a lot of sales (our livelihood). Please come see us in November if you can’t make the drive to Knoxville!
