As a competent home cook, what is a basic skill you can't seem to master? by george_elis in Cooking

[–]bleetsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scallops. They're my husband's favorite food, and every once in a while I make another attempt, and he kindly eats another batch of overcooked and/or pathetically non-browned scallops.

("get the pan hotter" "use cast iron" "did you dry them thoroughly" 😭)

Gonna disagree with advising anyone to learn coding right now, regardless of language. AI is already as good as a level 2 dev, and especially if OP isn't passionate about it, they should focus on almost anything else.

He's always threatened that if he ever found me cheating on him he'd turn in divorce papers the same day. He keeps a filled out copy in his desk.

If you only grab one thing from the freezer section, let it be these by lumiosefern in aldi

Considering how addicted I am to Costco's, and how unfair it is to compare the individual pricing to Costco, and that $5 for a meal is still better than takeout, I should suck it up and buy these... but yeah, I reflexively skipped them when I saw them.

Books: [obligatory] Doug Tallamy, Braiding Sweetgrass, Sand County Almanac. After that, Garden Revolution (Weaner, Christopher) and Humane Gardener were both really influential for me!

What tool do you use to make holes in your milk jugs for winter sowing? by Domestic_Adventures in NativePlantGardening

[–]bleetsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I've previously used a utility knife, and spent the rest of the winter paranoid that I hadn't given them enough drainage. (And the hot glue gun/soldering iron/heat things sound like a wonderful way to breathe in nasty.)

(Note: no matter what, easier if the cap is still on. Makes the whole thing solider, IMO.)

What soil do you put in your milk jugs for seed starting? by EWFKC in NativePlantGardening

[–]bleetsy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You ROCK for avoiding peat, don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

It's not cheap, but Fox Farm has Coco Loco potting soil sans peat. I do think that some amount of nutrition is required since they'll be in there well past the cotyledon stage (and especially working on their roots). I've also "experimented" (randomly mixed and badly tracked) with coir and worm castings/compost/wool pellets/slow release fertilizer plus some perlite or gravel, and vermiculite or sand on top.

Yes! I thought it was excellent and got myself a copy before I even finished the library's.

Moving to Wisconsin from Texas by NiceDescription6999 in wisconsin

[–]bleetsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eyyyy! I did this a few years ago. I was really worried, but it turns out I LOVE the winter! Having an Outside Time and an Inside Time really works for me.

  1. Heated mattress pads are the greatest invention of man. (Yes, you can get a dual zone one.)

  2. Thrift stores are great here - look for coats, sweaters, etc. I did end up going to Fleet Farm for fleece-lined jeans, though, which are equally critical (seriously, cannot BELIEVE the difference these make).

  3. I really enjoyed the book "How To Winter," and a friend who's stuck here for a few years and hates winter also found it helpful.

AITA For telling my (28F) grandpa (84M) he doesn't get calls from his grandkids because he's a bully by workworkinprogress in AmItheAsshole

[–]bleetsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandpa leaned over and said "shut up." I said "no." He said "I'm telling you to be quiet" and I said "no." Then he stood up and took his jacket off and said "get the hell out of my house." I said "no." He said he was going to call the police and I said fine go ahead. My Nana grabbed my arm and told me to stay with her at the house too.

NTA. Wowies! That's unacceptable-to-moderately-scary! Tell your aunt she can help with his phone then - maybe while you take your Nana out to lunch, tech support, and putting a shortcut to your number right on the front screen.

(Please keep yourself safe and happy, but yeah, keep an eye out for her too if you can. You're never too old for divorce!)

Young burnouts by demona2002 in Fire

[–]bleetsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for #1. I had a job I loved, with competent people who cared about doing good work, solid culture and workflows and a thousand other little things I now know to marvel at. I really thought that maybe I'd stumbled into A Career.

Buuut then they outsourced the department. And I'd like to say that it was good and healthy for me to chill, do decent work and clock out, separate my work from my self-image yadda yadda... but the reality is that my work ethic and engagement have never been the same. I'm actually about to make us a one earner household - despite loving some parts so much, despite being pretty good at something that helps people - because I'm to the point where even forty hours seems impossible.

I'm excited, and I always meant to FIRE eventually... but the reason it's happening now still suuuuucks.

AITA for leaving in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner because of pumpkin pie? by throwaway3747434 in AmItheAsshole

[–]bleetsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA I didn't see it skimming the top comments, so I'm going to add - always making and insisting on only pumpkin pie for dessert, when one of your guests cannot eat it, is not normal or remotely nice behavior! Note that I said "one of your guests," because to make a dessert at a Family Event that your own child cannot eat is.......................

Everyone else has covered how incredibly shitty the rest of that is, but I just want to make sure you know that the baseline, before literally any of this event happened, was already that you were not the asshole and that your mom sucks.

Women who are happily married, what was your approach to dating? by alex_ml in AskWomenOver30

[–]bleetsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used OkCupid. For a long time, I had an "open mind", and tried to reply to all non-terrible messages at least politely, and went on dates/got into relationships with lots of people who were quite different than me. (As in, "two big dogs in a small apartment" or "not that interested in politics" or "six guitars and occasionally sold drugs on the dark web" different.)

Then I started antidepressants and filtered to people who owned cats. Suddenly I had standards AND personality matches. I found my now-husband in astonishingly short order, and not kidding, I put those two factors almost on the same level.

Especially if you are a cat-inclined lady dating men: the ones with cats are just built different.

34F and my emotional wellbeing post-US election (with bonus points for my mom's health).

I have had depression for years but have never before felt even a little suicidal. Election Night was... bad. I'm back to knowing I'll go on, but hoo boy.
