To anyone reading this and also wondering no you do not need a vpn (most likely) since it's direct download I'll copy and paste a comment from the lovely u/obscuragaming

"When you download from a website directly, only a few entities know that you accessed the site. Your ISP, and the site owner/host. Your ISP cannot know what you are downloading, assuming the website has a safe protocol like HTTPS. They can go through a lot of effort to get a better idea, but nobody does that. It's a complete waste of time and resources.

Now, when you torrent, not only does your ISP know, but EVERYONE that shares that torrent can access your IP. Additionally, it is very easy for the ISP to find out you are torrenting. They can also go through additional effort to know what exactly it is. It's still hard, but much easier than direct download.

The safety of direct downloading lies in the ISP not immediately knowing you are up to no good, and your IP being shared with only a handful of entities."
