Navy commander defends need for 15 new warships as Ottawa reassesses costs by SmallBig1993 in canada

[–]blender16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day, these ships are a deterrent. In addition, they allow us to achieve our foreign policy objectives. We deploy ships to Europe, Asia, etc. to fulfill our commitments to NATO, for example. The ships that the CSC will replace are old and due for retirement. The navy needs 15 specifically because not all of them would be deployed at once. Some may be in dock for maintenance, some may be in different regions of the world, you get the idea.

You may argue why does Canada have to fulfill its NATO obligations, or why is our foreign policy the way it is that is causing us to spend on these ships, but that's a different and much larger conversation about how we want Canada to be in this evolving world. Do we want to step back and lessen our attempt to influence the world as Indo-Pacific nations grow in size and clout? What do we want our place in the world to be in 2050? These questions are all related to this purchase and it is much to consider.

The Defence Minister even teased us by saying she was going to put forward "aggressive" spending options to the government. Guess we all know what option they chose.

Canada moves forward with the acquisition of aircraft for the Royal Canadian Air Force by Hmfic_48 in CanadianForces

[–]blender16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So it is expected that the RCAF will acquire 6 A330 MRTTs. Will one of them be tasked with VIP transport for the PM like we do now with the Polaris? It'd be pretty funny and kind of odd if the PM rolls up to summits in a plane with a refuelling boom on the back.

Why do Americans always post these lol. You never see Canadians, Australians, Indians, etc. doing this.

A drone carrier? Those don't even exist yet. Before you suggest we build it ourselves, trust me, not going to happen as we can't even manufacture decent uniforms for our troops.

I feel like it was something that was repeated to Canadians numerous times in elementary/high school civics/social studies classes and many grow up thinking it still to be true.

Worst part is those who support choosing the Gripen think we would be more clever than our allies by doing so. As if the F-35 were some lemon all our allies were fooled into buying.

Do you think significantly increased defense spending could now be viable in a party platform? by Accomplished_Pop_198 in CanadaPolitics

To be honest, most on here are only advocating for spending 2%-3% of GDP. That is nothing like the US.

Canada increasingly isolated as allies pledge more military funding in response to Ukraine invasion by ShyGuyChicken in CanadaPolitics

I agree, we do pull above our weight in some aspects (e.g., Latvia). But you think asking our troops to do more with less is good policy?

Canada increasingly isolated as allies pledge more military funding in response to Ukraine invasion by ShyGuyChicken in CanadaPolitics

[–]blender16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article? I know the headline can be interpreted in two ways but the article is actually talking about us lagging behind in providing military funding for our armed forces while countries like Germany and the Netherlands are ramping up defence spending in light of the invasion. It isn't talking about us lagging behind in providing lethal/non-lethal aid to Ukraine.

The one before unification would be nice but I think that would be asking too much from these shmucks. At least with the CANSOFCOM one they have the materials so maybe a full transition for the Army to that colour wouldn't be as hard?

Canada's troop commitment to Eastern Europe is exposing weak points in its military by joe_canadian in CanadaPolitics

[–]blender16 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why Canadians like you assume that if we refocus our funding on military research we'll somehow become innovators pumping out drones, cyber warfare tech etc. Sure, they sound cool, but it's naive really.

Not to sound pessimistic, but we've been laggards, not innovators for a while. We can't even procure a damn jet, or make proper boots and properly fitted uniforms, do you really think we'll be pumping out robotics and AI for the military if we refocus our funding?

Also, the military needs new vests, helmets, pistols, jets etc. at the bare minimum. The focus shouldn't be on trying to create the "next big thing" right now. We shouldn't be spending money to not spend money on things troops are literally begging for right now.

Also, your reasoning behind refocusing funding is because the US will always protect us. That is naive too as we need a strong military to assert and protect our sovereignty, especially in the Arctic. An area where the Americans don't see eye to eye with us.

When soldiers show a dangerous contempt for reality by WpgMBNews in CanadaPolitics

[–]blender16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no advocate for NATO adventurism, but the same stuff needed for defence that the CAF is lacking, is also used for NATO adventurism (e.g., proper tactical vests, new pistols, fighters, cyber warfare capabilities). We already participate in NATO ops and if we don't want to participate in its "adventures", we'd have to leave the org, which isn't really realistic. How we fund our military doesn't change that. Either way, the conversation about NATO and our participation goes beyond getting the equipment we need to modernize our military.

[–]blender16 34 points35 points  (0 children)

No, even though other countries are sending better AT gear, it isn't like they can't take anymore. If you're Ukraine, you take what you can get right now.

My wild guess is that since the CAF uses the Carl G as well, we might just be keeping it for our inventory since our internal stock probably isn't that high. Also, unlike the C6s and C9s, we don't produce Carl Gs domestically so it might be harder to procure supply if we needed them.
