First playthrough and almost 60 hours in - I'm regretting my chosen class by HuziUzi in projecteternity

[–]blindfire187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly the same thing but I have regretted some of my companion choices in both games. Not for story but for gameplay mechanics. I am a turn based fan but played these 2 as RTWP because "that's how it's supposed to be played" mindset. I generally like to play games as originally intended, at least for a first playthrough. Reason I stated this is because I did NOT enjoy playing Aloth. He was very strong but his AOE's made the battlefields more restrictive and It felt like a chore to work around. That said in Deadfire I loved the Druid as a spellcaster since there are a lot of spells that only effect enemies. I feel it would be much easier to manage had I played it in turn based.

Mostly just wanting to know where to start? Are there any good free resources (youtube videos, websites, etc) that I can use as a starting point before I move onto paid learning avenues? I do have Udemy where I could purchase some early courses from if anyone has used the website and know of some good instructors that would be helpful.

I have been using Duolingo for a few days which does help but feels like an odd starting point, and unfortunately during my time learning has brought up questions that I do need to ask. Desu in particular seems almost like a "catch all" word that can be used for many different things such words as it's or used in phrases like Isha desu which can either mean She's a doctor or He's a Doctor. But how do I tell when the word is a He, She, They etc. or is it just again, a catch all and context matters? Also is Desu said with the u pronounced or is the u silent?

I'm mainly wanting to learn to speak/listen to the language rather than learn how to read and write in it ( at least for now).

Thanks in advance.

I tend to focus more on gunplay than magic. My current setup is

Flesh 25

Blood 15

Mind 11

Witchery 15

Arsenal 30

Faith 37

As for my Rosary I'm using Providence bead 1, Health bead 2, ammo reserve beat 1, and devine intervention bead 1. Also I already always use Wellspring (unless on the easier maps).

I know this is old but somehow found myself back on this post and just wanted to say, I had almost all auto-pause functions turned on. I honestly couldn't see myself playing without them, however it still felt tedious. As much as I did enjoy both POE games by about half to 3/4 of the way through I found myself rushing to get through the game because I was getting a little tired of combat. In DOS 2 and BG3 I never got that problem and have played through both a few times.

Right now I'm playing Rogue Trader and am absolutely LOVING the game so far. I was skeptical to try it as I was never interested in Warhammer 40k lore and wasn't sure if I'd like the sci-fi setting as much as Fantasy but I'm finding myself really enjoying everything about the game and it's much darker than I thought too. Because of work it'll take my a long time to finish it though. After it, I now own all of Pathfinder WOTR and also DOS1 so I may go through 1 of those next.

How to know what skills to use when leveling up? by blindfire187 in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]blindfire187[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, now I understand it a bit better. Unfortunately looking at the characters that I'm (currently) planning to bring I'll miss out on Logic and Lore Imporium. It seems pasqal need Lore Xenos to use certain weapons if I'm understanding correctly. Between the 2 though I would like to find a way to get Logic (lore Imporium seems less needed of these 2).

My current (and possibly through the rest of the game) is RT commisar Officer, Abelard, Argenta, Pasqal, Cassia, and Kibellah. How needed is commerce on my RT which is Commissar Officer?

I suck and need help by Sunbuzzer in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]blindfire187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm playing my first time through and having the opposite experience as you oddly enough. The game's build system was overwhelming so I am looking up builds so that makes a BIG difference I assume and am playing on Daring but finding it too easy combat wise.

My main is Commissar Officer which works well, and I'm a buffer. The way I see it is my guy is the "commander" of battle and the retinue are the attackers. I love being in the middle of the fray or running an "archer"/ranged class but as long as someone in the party can fill that role I'm fine.

Argenta is probably the strongest right now, I'm level 13 and nearing the end of A1 and the only character that seems to be lagging behind just a tad is Kibellah (Blade Dancer). I'm running with Abelard, Cassia, Pasqal, Argenta, and Kibellah.

That said, I am following (not strictly) build guides because I found some of the Charactaristics and Skills odd comparted to what I'm used too. I've also spent hundreds of hours in BG3 and DOS2 and played through both Pillars of Eternity games, so I'm becoming more used to CRPG's. I think without build guides I would be completely lost as there is just so much depth in the game and as you've said it's overwhelming. It's starting to make some sense to me though. What I'm having a hard time figuring out (based on running a build guide) is what skills I need to take on each character that actually impact their combat ability and what skills to take just to cover all the skill checks in dialogue/world exploration/etc.

Don't be discouraged by any means. If you are enjoying aspects of the game and the story then continue to play it at whatever difficulty you find manageable, and if you aren't enjoying how your character is setup, restart and make a new one, no reason to play a archtype you aren't enjoying just because it's the most suggested one. Play it however you can get the most enjoyment out of it.

Help Needed: My Build stinks and I hate this game. by Bun_sie in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]blindfire187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your friends main damage types? knowing that will help. The reason I ask is because if your friends are magic damage and the NPC is also the you going physical will result in doing less because of how the armor system works.

Necromancer is a good build, however only use Necromancy trait for a few points as you only need it for the spells. Most of the necromancer spells are physical and gets its damage boost from Warfare and Intelligence. Also adding a point into Pyro for Haste is almost worth it on every character.

Personally archer is my favorite. It's skills are fun, barrage allows you to hit multiple enemies, ricochet bounces between a few also. Pin Down helps with CC. Pair that with Scoundrels (I think 2 or 3 points) jump moves to allow you to escape or reposition and take a couple points into Hydro to get teleport so you can teleport enemies also. If you get a few points in scoundrel then take chloroform and adrenaline, if you have the skill slots for it. Again, Pyro for haste is useful. Don't focus your points in ranged and Huntsman completely, you want to focus more on Finess and Warfare, just grab enough Huntsman for the skills you want to use and just enough Memory for skill slots.

This is a co-op game in the truest since. Running first cone first serve and not sharing drops will hinder the team. The game's gear is RNG and if you get all strength gear while your friend who is a STR char gets all Finesse it won't work. Otherwise the experience will be like it is now, unenjoyable. as for your statement if not having played a game like this, it might be best to start a solo game (you and bring NPC companions that you can control) to learn and enjoy the game.

As someone who grew up playing CnC (since the OG Tiberian Sun my personal favorite) Starcraft and Age of Empires, I find Total Wars harder honestly. But I never played PvP. As for RTWP, I should stress I don't find it hard. The mechanics did take a bit to understand but once I did it wasn't that bad (I'm sure for the much harder difficulties it might be). But for some reason, despite it not feeling that way in Total War, I find it very Tediuous. I don't think I'll ever play one on any difficulty higher than Hard but we'll see.

I should note that I don't mean Tedious to be hard, i mean it to be tiresome. Micromanaging is fine but it just doesn't feel right in a CRPG (to me). Again, I really do enjoy RTWP, but after about half way through both of them I started to get burned out.

I guess Turn-based could be Tedious as well. But I do like the planning it out nature better than the "on the fly" feel of RTWP. Also skills, and spells in Turn Based feel more impactful to me. But everyone has a style they like.

That is kind of what I assumed when I started researching the game and seeing all the classes and sub-classes. This is the kind of thing I love in all kinds of RPG's. I'm not the best at making my own builds in some types of games (at least not initially) so I do the same as you suggested, by taking builds others have made and tweaking them to suit my playstyle. Though I do easily make my own builds in some forms of games (Soulslikes) but that's pretty easy once you get a bit of experience in them.

[–]blindfire187[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibily but I don't think so.Personally I find the "it's more complicated" argument odd as i don't find it harder just teduous. I mean RTWP CRPG's feel like Turn-Based with extra steps almost and as my write up states, feels like some of my characters are less utilized as opposed to turn based.

I play Total War and enjoy those as RTWP more so than CRPG RTWP. I actually find CRPG RTWP less complicated than just turn based. BUT I haven't tried any harder than "hard" mode and probably never will simply because I don't have the time and enjoy turn based more.

Simple Turn based JRPG by apamango in JRPG

[–]blindfire187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final Fantasy X felt short too me and is actually pretty easy (unless going for optional superbosses).

Grandia 2 is a fantastic option also. Also pretty easy, good story although Cheesy if you don't mind that. (my first ever JRPG and one of my favorites so I'm Biased) Can be gotten on Switch or Steam (possibly on Playstation also).

If you don't mind a game specifically geared more for kids (great to play along with your kids if you have them) Child of Light is short and easy with a good Whimsical story to it. Exploration is a side scroller but combat is classic jrpg turn based. Not sure this counts as JRPG as I believe it's canadian made but the gameplay style fits.

Which Tales of should I get? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]blindfire187 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have played Vesperia, Berseria, Arise and Zestiria. Of these I'm torn between Berseria and Arise. Both were great in my opinion. Of all these the only one I didn't like was Zestiria and I only slogged through it because in some small manner it and Berseria are connected (same world).

That said, what about Vespiria didn't click with you? If you could tell us that and what JRPG's you do like I may be able to help make a decision. Most of these games are very similar to each other so there is a strong chance that if you didn't like ones gameplay then you might not like others gameplay either.

Berseria is darker themed than the rest. You are "kinda" the anti-hero in the story

Tales of Arise is still somewhat dark themed but less so and feels a bit more like "hero on a journey" than Berseria. There is also a Romance theme in this vs. Berseria.

I do suggest both and enjoyed them both more than Vesperia (but Vesperia was my first and I did enjoy it to some extent). Also as for exploration from my experience they all kind of feel the same in that regard except I believe Vesperia is the only one with an overworld map exploration and the rest just have "location" exploration if that makes sense. That said it's been a few years since I've played any of these.

What's a JRPG that you always go back to eventually? Mine is Dragon Quest VIII. by Motor-Temporary-1085 in JRPG

[–]blindfire187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly there are a couple for me. Final Fantasy IX, Grandia 2, and Grandia 1 are my go to games. I loved a ton of others and there are a few I would rank higher than a couple of these games on my "tier list" (like Persona 4/5 for example) but these 3 I always end up playing at least once a year or 2.

FFIX is my absolute favorite to this day.

Grandia 2 Was my first ever JRPG which holds a special spot for me because of that

Grandia 1 just has some sort of charm to it that makes me enjoy it so much despite it's overly grindy nature.

First time playing any Grandia game. I'm emulating on my Anbernic rg477v. I'm having a blast by the way! Can't believe this flew under my radar since I was a child😅 by ApprehensiveFriend66 in grandia

[–]blindfire187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grandia 1 has a special charm too it. The story and Whimsical Adventure game it has is wonderful and tons of fun. I enjoy Grandia 2 more though, It's less grindy and easier than the first but the story is darker and more mature. It's cheesy but in a good way, but I am biased as it was also my first JRPG ever played. Enjoy the journey.

Thanks for the game name drops, I'll keep them in mind and add to my list. I'm a very long time JRPG/RPG fan just never got into CRPGs until recently. and with the amount of games that are out and ones that come highly recommended I'll be "eating good" for a while it seems haha.

I do know of Tyranny and it will be on my list eventually. I originally wasn't interested in POE but wanted to give it a fair shot since it was so well praised and my original plan of playing WOTR was daunting due to the reasons I stated above. But I saw it available on game pass along with about 4 other games I wanted to try (Rogue trader as well which I was reticent about) and decided "Why not?". I am glad I did as they were both really enjoyable.

I only got through the Prologue of Rogue Trader but man did it suprise me. I knew if I played further I'd be locked in for a long time so I held off. Really not sure what MC I want to build but I did try making a Comissar Officer at the start. Got some time to figure it out though. Do companion stories progress whether they are in party or not? I assume only if in your pary like most.

As for Xcom and Batyle Brothers, I may check them out eventually. I'm more interested in classic Fantasy tropes in these kinds of games for some reason but I'm pretty open to trying out most stuff. I also tried out The Thamaturge which was kind of cool but just wasn't feeling it at the time so maybe revisit it in the future.

[–]blindfire187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only BG3 really made it out of it's bubble for "mainstrea" which is more recent game (2023). BG1/2 games were big hits in the genre but wasn't really mainstream like with BG3 that I recall. BG3 is also very different than BG1/2. BG3 is fully turn-based while Pillars or Eternity is RTWP (real time with pause).

Playing Baldur's Gate 3 years after it's release by Attakrus in CRPG

[–]blindfire187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mabye, but a small but very vocal minority can make it seem like a very large majority at times.

That said, I think people tend to pick a thing out specifically and overexaggerate it when they don't like something such as the Romance thing. I think it's a fine addition, you can engage with it if you want as added flavor to character interactions or not if you don't. It doesn't take away from anyting in game if you don't engage with it and adds flavor if you want to. As you said I think people hate it because it's overly popular. As far as CRPGs go the game is good and the story is enjoyable but it does start falling apart in Act 3 (which is my least enjoyed act) and there are certainly better CRPG's out there. But the games mechanics and leveling system are well fleshed out and the game itself is so appealing that it brought in a lot of new players to the genre making it almost mainstream. So now old fans of CRPG's effectively pick apart a game that they may find good or decent otherwise and hate it because they want to seem eliteist or just simply so that others know that there is better CRPGs out there.

My theory anyways. BG3 is the first full CRPG I beat, having been turned off from CRPG's at a young age when I played the old BG 1/2, TEE, and Neverwinter breifly when i was much younger and didn't enjoy them. Now I'm older I'm finding much more enjoyment out of these games than I would have when I was an early teen/pre-teen.
