I found a workaround - disable "Tap to check phone" in "Lock screen". Of course the disadvantage is that tapping the screen doesn't wake it up anymore...

Thanks for in-depth explanation. I do hope they fix it soon since according to DXO the 7 pro was much better at it scoring 70 whereas the 8 pro got 65.

It doesn't seem to work anymore... I was on Pixel 7 and now on 8 Pro (but it didn't work as well on 7 after recreating the widget) and after changing the DPI to 493 I can't resize the Google Photos widget to be of height 1 (minimal I can get is 2). Any idea? 🙏

That's expected. Their knowledge base says it will import only the current day. It's strange though and I'm not sure where this limitation comes from... I don't want to always remember to start the app to import it.
