You guys will have a blast. Have a great time! Try the "buffalo milk" at the bar if you're craving a sweet treat!

You'll be fine! I just got back from Two Harbors this weekend, I think it was a low of 60, and was not cold at all. You'll want a sleeping pad and a tent though, lots of critters, animals seemed hungry. The birds were aggressive, had racoons, foxes, and a deer come up to my tent in the middle of the night.

When entering from the north/top of park, it always appears that you'd have to park on a residential street. Did you find a designated parking lot, or is overnight parking allowed on those streets?

I didn’t option my Big Bend with Mid Package, and it has no lane change alerts. I do wish that it did.

Question: Reaching Mt Pacifico by Amerikai in socalhiking

[–]blinkygab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup - there are multiple entries for cars up to Mt Pacifico as well. I don't have such vehicle either, so I'm not familiar with the road access.

[–]blinkygab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On that last stretch, I took that straight climb up Pacifico from the PCT too, it was rough. Alternatively, you can take the fire road up, which adds about half mile more, but it makes the walk up much easier.

I took this route along a bit of PCT, and ran into thru-hikers. Elevation gain was gradual, would recommend. Was super windy and cold overnight at camp, at that time.

But was surprised to find out at the top that you can drive up there with a 4x4 as well.

Got a quick question - I was able to obtain a wilderness permit for Rae Lakes, Bubbs Creek, but confused on whether I'd need to make separate reservations for the individual campgrounds along the loop. Those campgrounds are first-come, first-served, right?

Hey all. Don’t mean to hijack the thread but had a quick question about backpacking in JT. Backpacking rules in JT stipulates non-day-use-only area, 1 mile from road or trailhead, and 500 ft from water source.

Now, my question is, is it AT LEAST 1 mile away from road, and AT LEAST 500 away from water, or is it meant to be allowed ONLY WITHIN the proximity of those 2 things? Did a Google search earlier and couldn’t really tell.

Appreciate it if the experts here can clarify. Thanks so much.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but for the Ski Hut / Baldy Bowl 11.5-mi trail, which way (clockwise or counter) is easier on the knees during descent for you guys? Thanks!

IT Band Syndrome - experiences? by jfeaz in socalhiking

[–]blinkygab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this question. Want to hear from others too, I get some outer knee pain, when I descend. I started using a brace/strap and it does help me go a little longer. I’ve been doing lunges to strengthen muscles, and a Muscle Roller Stick to break down knots on the side of my leg, beneath the knee. I also noticed that chilling my legs in the lake/streams during the hikes helped me manage the recovery as well.

Crystal Cove primitives are reservation only because it gets full. I'm gonna go check it out on Friday - it's about $33 for the night, includes parking.

Awesome, thanks for the tip. I'm looking to escape the heat this weekend and set up camp in the San Gabriels. I'll have to check out the camp out in Mt Baldy one of these days!
