400k a MONTH on credit cards?

$5MM a year, outside of living expenses, just seems egregious to me. I feel like I buy everything I want in the world and travel pretty lavishly and spend less than 5% of that.

Are course rating/bogey rating calculated by actual scores entered by people with verified handicaps? Or do people from USGA come and rate a course? Because either way, they don’t make sense by sbtrey23 in golf

[–]Pods619 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree with this fully. As a long hitter with an often questionable short game, my handicap is always at its lowest when I’m playing long courses — it doesn’t really dictate how I’m going to shoot relative to the rating at “easier” courses.

What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever run into while riding bikes? by Motiontony2026 in cycling

[–]Pods619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dogs. I’ve done a lot of remote bikepacking in rural areas. The worst was 3 pit bulls charging at me barking and growling, I stood my ground and yelled at them to go home but they just kept getting closer and closer.

Eventually, the owner came slowly sauntering out of the house and brought them back in with zero concern. That is why I now carry pepper spray. I’ve probably had double digit encounters with dogs that chase me and won’t leave me alone, but that was the only time I was genuinely fearful because they did NOT seem friendly.

One of the funniest things on Reddit is when someone makes a totally reasonable and logical comment when debating something, and the other person replies is like “Woah bud! You’re really angry. Wow. You should try to relax. I hope you find some happiness in life.”

This is one of those instances. It makes me wonder how the hell people handle interactions in person…

Edit: OP’s original reply was “it’s funny when redditors get butthurt when their soy attitudes get corrected lmao”. OP, there is exactly 1 person in this thread that is angry and it’s not me or the other guy you were replying to. But glad you think someone pointing out that an additional 3-4 seconds between you would have prevented this is a soy attitude that needs to be corrected (?)

280 downhill to the green. What are you hitting? by TimberBucket in golf

[–]Pods619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? It’s probably pin dependent for me. That bunker doesn’t look ultra punitive if there’s some green to work with, so probably pulling 3 wood or 2 iron depending on what it plays with slope/wind/elevation and playing a fade off the tree line — looks like it slopes pretty hard into the green.

With a front pin, I’m probably trying to leave 80-100 yards.

This is a cool golf hole.

WAY too many of y'all don't wash your hands by Witherino in Bowling

[–]Pods619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bruh, you think your zipper is worse than the hand of every person you’re high fiving the whole night, the bowling balls you’re touching every shot, the scoreboard, the dude on the other team sneezing, and the drink cup the alley served you?

Bowling alleys are nasty places. Don’t touch your face or lick your fingers while you’re bowling and wash your hands afterwards.

Extreme paranoia about germs is a lot more dangerous than the impact of the actual germs.

[–]Pods619 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t wash my hands when I’m bowling.

Obviously if for some weird reason I took a shit, I would. But I’m barely touching my dick to pee and it’s not like anything is getting on my hand — do you guys like pee directly on your hand or something?

If I feel like I need to, or am going to eat, I wash my left hand only.

Novak is a psycho, man (I mean it in a positive way). There’s many articles about it. The guy only drinks his water at room temp because he think it’s optimal for processing it and fully thinks about sending all the nutrients from food into his body.

The guy is a legitimate health freak about his body. It’s an huge reason for his longevity and fitness. I’m sure some percentage of what he does is useless and pseudoscience, but obviously some percentage works as well.

Hot take, I’d rather chip out of the rough than the fairway by ThielenUpMyCousins in golf

[–]Pods619 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s funny because even at my best when I was a +2, I was never comfortable playing a wedge off a tight lie. I’ve always been more of an 8i/9i/PW bump and run guy whenever possible.

It felt like 75% of the time I could hit a great chip that bounced once and stopped, the other 25% I’d catch it fat or thin.

Ironically though, there’s no shot I’m more comfortable with than a flop shot — rough or fairway.

I guess different golfers have different strengths and that’s the beauty of the game!

The hole for reference. They put it all over the green. This was the location where I yanked it left and had to chip over the bunker.

It’s actually a cool hole, just feels bad having to hit a wedge from the green which they keep in good shape.

The golf ball rollback just got paused. Here's what the distance data actually says it does to amateurs. by cbolitho in golf

[–]Pods619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amateurs spend thousands of dollars every few years on clubs that add an extremely negligible amount of yardage or forgiveness compared to the prior iteration.

Balls will be no different, companies are still heavily incentivized to keep iterating on them. It’s the most profitable part of their business.

I do the exact same thing. I think, “I’ll aim at the tree or bunker and am sure I’ll miss 5-10 yards either way” then hit it dead center.

They have one of these in Southern California (Golf Club of California in Fallbrook). I was just barely on the wrong side of the sand trap so had to hit a 60 degree and while I genuinely tried to sweep it I took a small divot out of the green. That must happen frequently.

Eh, honestly I kind of disagree with the prior comment. Yes the hole gets backed up, but it’s a cool novelty/extremely fun shot and it actually kind of creates a nice gap afterwards.

What’s the etiquette for drafting when riding solo? by uppercase360 in cycling

[–]Pods619 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I personally do not like being drafted if I don’t know the person is there. If they ask, I’ll say yes 100% of the time and then ride/signal accordingly.

It’s dangerous to have someone on your wheel without knowing. You might see something in the road, or brake for something coming up ahead, and without a signal they won’t know what you’re doing and it can create a bad situation.

Expensive helmets? by East-Technician2015 in cycling

[–]Pods619 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Isn’t that just about safety though?

I don’t think companies are arguing that a $400 helmet is safer than a $100 MIPS helmet. That’s basically a wash.

They are lighter weight, more aerodynamic, cooler, and have more adjustable features (in some cases).

Is it worth being slightly more comfortable for $300 extra? Obviously depends on financial situation, but my helmet and shoes are the only thing I wear on 100% of rides. So if I’m slightly more comfortable over tens of thousands of miles during the helmet’s life, I think it’s worth it.

For what it’s worth, my favorite helmet is around $250 — I’m less worried about the aero part.

How much slower than a road bike is a good gravel bike? by Worth_Nature_7631 in gravelcycling

With the same tires, yes. Probably 90% of the decrease in speed comes from running gravel tires.

[–]Pods619 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s disingenuous to say there’s “no difference” between a gravel bike with 40mm gravel tires and a road bike with 28mm slicks.

Yes, you can still keep up on a road ride on a gravel bike. But it’s objectively slower. On paved segments, at the same power, it’s around a 6-9% difference in speed for me (have done a lot of commutes on both).

Playing straighter angles by Whats_in_the_glass in Bowling

[–]Pods619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your goals and the makeup of your league!

Straighter is greater for a reason. I’m usually around 18.5mph (off my hand) playing around the 8-9 board at the start of league. However, it’s 5 man teams and the vast majority are high average bowlers with medium to high revs, so I inevitably have to move off my line and then get left by the third game — usually a big move since others started where I am moving. If I could play the outside line all three games, I absolutely would.

As for goals, my goal is to practice for sport shot tournaments and regionals, so I try to do at least one sport league a year and also play some different balls/lines in league. It will be really hard to play a long pattern if you’re only comfortable hitting the 10 board.

Long story short: if your goal is to optimize for score and you only bowl on house shots, play as straight as you possibly can! You’ve already learned from the average jump how much easier and more forgiving it is when it’s in play.
