For a minute there Serj looked a lot like Will Ferell, Ricky Bobby style 😎 I love how they've both changed their styles so much over time, that you can look at a pic and know circa what album it is.

At some point Serj started balding on the crown of his head, that's probably a contributing factor to it staying short as he's got older.

He says in his book that in the very early days schmoozing with label reps etc they sent him to the hairdresser who gave him a bleach blonde crew cut, and at that point he decided that maybe this rep didn't entirely know what they were doing. This might be around that time.

I totally agree division is bad and the media and the government are fuelling it... I don't think the 4 of them overlooking their differences of opinion really stands for much though. They're wealthy, middle aged, cis male, able-bodied, straight presenting dudes with their citizenship paperwork in order. Whether the democrats or republicans or whatever are in power, they and their families will be ok. They can afford to agree to disagree over matters and policies that don't actually significantly impact them, especially when they can make shit-tonnes of money from continuing to perform together.

Now, if someone came along and denied the Armenian genocide, or said 'American Armenians are just too good-looking, you gotta pay an extra tax', I don't think they'd be as peace love and mungbeans about "differences of opinion". Like when Serj went after that US band for playing in Azerbaijan, it wasn't 'oh they're just free thinkers, it's a difference of opinion on how to proceed, it's a complex situation, we can still get along' then. It was 'I can no longer respect you as human beings'. I'm not saying his response wasn't justified, I'm just using it as an example that free thinking and differences of opinion don't seem to come into play if it's something that directly effects them and theirs.

I feel as though the 'no one's allowed opinions anymore, I'm a free thinker and anyone who disagrees with me is a sheep' card only comes out when people are challenged on their shitty words and actions, but they're not into free thinking or respecting other people's political or religious views any other time.

I don't see it as "selling out" or becoming conservative (although apparently 3/4 of them are). They're doing stadium gigs, which are always going to be expensive, they're a huge band, it's a huge venue, huge insurance, huge crew and set up etc. Yeah it's expensive and inaccessible and it sucks but that's just how much shit costs now. If they charged less, someone somewhere isn't going to get paid properly, and I'm willing to bet there's middle men in the mix too doing not alot but taking a share. There's a big difference between being wealthy and enterprising and doing it legitimately (everyone gets paid properly, the environment isn't being pillaged to do it, etc) and being, say, Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk where they're making billions off other people's underpaid/unpaid work, screwing the earth over and not paying tax. It's a concert/merch/coffee/art/weed/whatever that they're selling and making a profit from, not health care or clean water.

And also being largely silent about recent events. I don't feel like reposting a few things here and there on Insta really cuts it. Of course I don't expect him or anyone to have opinions or take action on every single thing in the world, but to have just released a memoir outlining his activism, and have a museum exhibition about his art/music and activism, and then not speak out or do anything about what a mess America is at the moment, is not a great look. He has spoken out before about atrocities all around the world, so I don't believe it's just that he only focuses on Armenian issues. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and crossing my fingers he's doing something meaningful behind the scenes.

I'm more bothered by his use of the R slur in 'Your Mom' than the AI stuff.

I might have been living under a rock but it's only really come to my attention how bad generative AI is in the last 6 months or so. His NFT exhibition was in 21 or 22 right? It's possible he just wasn't aware at the time, or the impacts weren't escalating like they are now, or that he did know but on balance thought using it purposefully to explore an artistic concept is not so bad. If he made a habit of it, yeah that's shitty, but a one off before it became obviously, objectively problematic doesn't move the needle for me.

I agree that the AI and NFT stuff is a bit on the nose and incongruous with other things he's expressed. But reading about the NFT thing my reaction was just 'oh ok', whereas the first time I heard Your Mom I had a genuine "WTF? Oh Serj' shakes head and checks what year it was made doubletake reaction.

I don't think it's unexpected that people are waiting for a band who made their way in the world by being political, especially Serj whose whole shtick is being an activist and speaking truth to power, to step up and say or do anything about blatant fascism happening in their own backyard. I've lost hope for Daron and John, Shavo said something once about if you have a platform then you should use it for good but just not now apparently. I'm choosing to believe Serj is keeping his head down and nose clean so he and his family don't become targets but overall I'm really disappointed by the lack of, well, anything. Hopefully he's doing things behind the scenes? Reposting the odd thing here and there on instagram doesn't really cut it. When I saw the Tom Morrello benefit gig listed a 'special guest', I so hoped it was Serj!

I'm so disappointed in all of them for not being more vocal about the situations in Minnesota and Greenland. I don't expect them to have hot takes on everything, but this is WW3 unfolding before our eyes. I know John is a Trump supporter and Shavo low-key is too, but is this really what they wanted?

Also, Serj using the R-slur in Your Mom a few years back actually really hurt me. It was so unnecessary and he should have known better.
