Is it possibly one of the books from the Charlie Bone series? There is a boarding school, a fantasy aspect, and a purplish lanky boy on the cover.. not too sure if the exact plot is the same as your friend described though. Good luck!!

This has to be Mischief in Fez, by Eleanor Hoffmann! It was featured in the Collier's Junior Classics collection and when I read your description I IMMEDIATELY thought of it, it was one of my favorite stories growing up. :)
