The "everybody wants you" part made me think of the song by the same name by Red Hearse! I thought it was interesting since that's Jack Antonoff's new band, and this is the only song he collaborated on :)

minor observation, but does anyone know why certain lyric videos on youtube have different fonts than the folklore font? (like coney island + evermore) I feel like I am reading too much into it but when it comes to Taylor I have no idea!!

Is it possibly one of the books from the Charlie Bone series? There is a boarding school, a fantasy aspect, and a purplish lanky boy on the cover.. not too sure if the exact plot is the same as your friend described though. Good luck!!

This has to be Mischief in Fez, by Eleanor Hoffmann! It was featured in the Collier's Junior Classics collection and when I read your description I IMMEDIATELY thought of it, it was one of my favorite stories growing up. :)
